Trying to blackmail the UK by threatening to use their power of veto to block any deal until the border issue is resolved.
Also suggesting we stay in the single market. Hope the UK tells them to do one.
The UK has no agenda to implement a hard border and we'd only end up with one if the EU forced the ROIs hand on the matter.
So why aren't the ROI in discussions with the EU rather than attacking the UK.
And of course behind all their rhetoric is a veiled threat of the 'troubles' starting up again.

PM May should explain to them

She would like to talk about the border, but could find no time.

imho we should try and treat ROI with respect but if they are going to be d1cks about this, it's not about them, they chose their path 90 or so years ago. The ex-tail shouldn't wag the dog.

There is only one question that needs to be answered
What do the loyalists want ?

Since the result of the referendum the UK government have always said that it was crucial to have the current situation in Ireland retained.
That's a view shared by both the ROI government and Northern Ireland Assembly.
We've opposed any talk of a hard border but this doesn't seem good enough for the ROI who want to place this above all else.
I don't see it like that and feel that if any damage is done to the relationship we have with the ROI then it can only come from the EU.
I also detest the way they continually say 'We don't want a return to the troubles'. Surely nobody does so why raise it.

Listened to Owen Paterson (former Secretary of State for NI) on Sunday politics today.
Already an electronic border because of the Euro, VAT, Income tax and Corporation tax.
He suggested something similar but this was scorned on by the ROI MEP who says the UK must stay in the Customs Union and the Single Market.
The only person talking about a hard border is the ROI.

This is it Aka, despite their pretence to be so different, no country that loves milky Tea and Breakfast Bacon that much is that different to us :) I want good relations with Ireland, and NI to have a good relationship with the ROI but I'm already hacked off with the EU being d1cks, we don't need them to add to it. Personally my patience is already shot.

Seemingly there are numerous instances of soft borders throughout the world but this ROI MEP just ignored that fact.

I wouldn't mind if England had a free trade agreement and free movement of people with America ,
And N Ireland as part of the UK of course also
That makes more sense than any freedom of movement and trade deal with Europe

No matter how important they were , none are missed?
Well I thought that once and it surprised me , and I wasn't wrong either

ehmm,  some on here say UK has no desire to implement a hard border.  Please stop, just more silliness.  Mightn't want to, but impossible no to - (I know, I know - we didn't think this through eitherCryCry)

• Different customs union means a border (no example of anything else anywhere in the world)
• No border, so anyone in EU, can go to Ireland and walk into UK - not Ireland's responsibility or problem I would have thought
By:
lfc1971
When: 28 Nov 17 23:30
well I don't think we need to worry about the border, if they want to that's up to them
By:
lfc1971

I mean if they don't want to listen to our good advice on the border there's not much we can do about that
By:
lfc1971
When: 28 Nov 17 23:38
you see at the minute anyone from the eu can go to Ireland and walk into any part of the UK
That's now , so I don't think we need to be too worried

We will now soon enough how the EU sees this issue. If the money has now been sorted, are we now able to move to the next stage? The Irish want assurances on the border, the EU have said they want the UK to provide clarification on the border. Will the EU move forward now or still dig in. We won't have long to wait to find out.

Interesting take on things. One of lessons I learned in negotiating deals through the years, always appreciate and assess what the other side wanted out of the deal. It helped to form my own stance.

Always thought EU said 3 things need to be sorted. Paying our debts, Ireland and rights of EU citizens. We only seem to be a third of the way there and it's December in 2 days.
