“It is not being treated as a terrorist incident at this stage while we establish what has happened.”

Pictures and footage shared on social media showed street damage and a large police presence in the capital’s museum district, which is home to the NHM, the Science Museum and the Victoria and Albert Museum.

One witness, Lesley Carter, said passersby held the man down before police arrived.

“I saw the man pinned down by about six people – one guy was trying to pin him down with his four- or five-year-old daughter in his arms,” she said.

“It looked like the car had smashed into the wall between two other cars and the guy got out to run before being pinned down. Loads of people were running away and within minutes the police had turned up. It was a very quick response.”

A video posted on Twitter showed a man being restrained on the ground in the middle of Exhibition Road. None of the four people around him were in police uniform. A black Toyota car is behind them with the driver’s door open, and it appears to have collided with a silver Vauxhall saloon.

Police have described the incident in the South Kensington area of London as a collision and said the motive for the incident was under investigation.

"London is one of safest places in the world."

My son lives in London with his girlfriend, she was born in London and lived there all her life, asked her how safe she feels and she said there is nearly 10-million people living in London, so what are my chances of being attacked by a terrorist - 10-million-to-one.

A statistically flawed opinion, for several reasons including  a terrorist usually takes out more than 1 person. Advise her not to take up gambling!

let's hope no one is seriously hurt but that is a very busy part of exhibition road with visitors to the three nearby museums milling around.

i've seen a picture of him being restrained and it appears to be yet another minicab driver incident so it may turn out to be a case of a useless tw@t unable to drive in a straight line. that may seem unlikely but i have seen multiple pictures of minicab crashes where i scratch my head and say 'how did the fecker get the car into that position?'. it isn't unknown for unlicensed individuals to work a friend's or relative's vehicle hence him trying to do a runner.

if it is terrorism i hope he isnt one of the 13,000 puber drivers allowed to work despite not having a valid disclosure barring service certificate. with minicab drivers involved in several acts of terror you would think transport for london would be a bit more stringent about enforcing the rules but sadly not. it seems the terrorists have realized how easy it is to become a phv driver in london and then get legitimate access to ideal places to launch their dastardly deeds. imo it's about time you are required to have lived in the country for five years with no crimes committed before you are allowed to become a phv driver.

Yeah, I know it's a statistically flawed opinion, but young 29-year-old trying to be positive, "it's not going to stop me from doing what I do every day."  In the end with these attacks, it comes down to one thing, just hope your not in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Good news that the public intervened in the way they did. Implies skulduggery though. Doubt they thought the chap was driving poorly.

Anyhow, minor incident. Thankfully.

We have been to the south end of Exhibition Road nearest the Tube and the area, normally a busy destination for Saturday afternoon dining by locals and tourists, is deserted.
Eyewitnesses told us that police came rushing into each bar and restaurant and told people to get out.
We can see coats on chairs - some knocked over - half-eaten meals and half-drunk glasses of wine.
Police helped one restaurant owner to recover staff belongings, like house keys, because it was unclear when the area would reopen.

Now treating it as a road traffic collision and declared not terror related. Is that right?
If so bit of an overreaction pinning him down and then hand-cuffing him.

Looks like an Uber driver had some sort of breakdown, and not in the car-related sense. Perhaps being sat on by half a dozen passers-by did not help.

Is there anything else that can go wrong for Uber?
