Spanish government are behaving like the EU

At least it will help them deter all the tourists they detest.

Staggering scenes.
Is this REALLY happening before our very eyes in Europe? The police are being tougher on these ordinary people than they are on the Islamic fascists in their own country. |

Amazing scenes, I'm in Barcelona at the moment but obviously in the wrong area as I haven't seen any of this. Just a few people in Barca shirts wondering what to do with themselves this afternoon

You would think some shrewdie would have whispered in the Spanish leaders ear .....it's not 1970 and Franco , there will be worldwide footage from a million cameras and smart phones of the police beating up people who want to cast a vote .......if it was Turkey , North Korea , China we would have world leaders falling over each other to condemn it .

There was a clip earlier today showing a 79 year old woman who had been struck in the face by the guardia civil/riot police and the poor woman had a bandage across her nose. Absolutely sickening.
|
|
By:
Take a long hard look at yourself son
|
|
By:
A 79 year old woman is "trouble making filth" as you put it and obviously there is in no doubt in your twisted mind that the oldtimer deserved to be beaten up. Words fail me.
|
|
By:
ah yes the poor woman who of course got full warning not to partake in illegal activity but choose to anyway...
why don't you play the worlds smallest violin for all the poor old women in barcelona eh? FFS Racingqueen she could end up scared for life.............well the last portion of her life ![]() |

Seriously what has happened in Spain is mild to what will happen with the Kurds

She should spend her final days in prison for treason imho |

there are two entirely separate matters here:
one is giving people to right to express an opinion in a structured manner. the second is whether this opinion has any constitutional relevance. no democracy should deny its citizens the first option, and in particular, should never prevent its people from exercising this right through the use of violence. whether or not their vote has any importance is something the law can worry about afterwards. |
|
By:
The whole of Spain could be destabilised by this. I heard the Basque region is starting to look exposed.
|
|
By:
Gibraltar region looking rocky !

over 750 people injured, disgusting behaviour by the police. Democracy is ending.
|
|
By:

|
By:
12 police officers hurt. obvious the voters have begun getting violent and the police have defended themselves.
the court of social media opinion as always will back the criminal thugs. |

There are no borders in Europe and no independent countries.
If a country wants independence then there has to be a border and an end to free movement of people and the end to the automatic right to live and work in the other country. There is no point in having a vote on independence unless this is recognised. |
|
By:
If for example part of a country wishes to have a vote to break away, and having done so intends to be part of the EU and form political and military ties with other countries then that means that the vote to break away is not something that is their decision alone , it must include the main host country.
Because it is their security, financial, political, and military safety as well that has to be considered. |

An excellent intelligent well thought out post ^

spanish police fighting with local brigade
dear oh dear oh dear |
|
By:
So the Spanish government should stand back and let a bunch of ultranationalist hotheads carry out an illegal anti-constitutional act which would be seriously destabilising for Spain and the wider EU.
|

They are not the main European countries, they are not the countries that have a history if war and revolution. look at it this way.
Why do you think that England and Scotland firmed the greatest and most successful alliance of any two countries in history ? It was an alliance to secure the safety of England , because England could not trust Scotland not to form alliances with European countries against England. |
|
By:
I don't think you can make comparisons with Scotland and England. They are not part of the EU anymore.
Things change... |
|
By:
the sword was mightier than the ballot box today
watch that space though |
|
By:
Well of course things change, but not that much . People forget how fragile civilisation is.
In Britain we have been very fortunate, we have 300 years and a history that has been a kind of miracle. |

The Catalan brains trust is out now being led by Gerard Pique....
What next David Beckham leading Peckham to independence.....Rodney and Delboy in his new cabinet ffs ![]() |
|
By:
the police baton is a great recruitment aid
|

Democracy in the EU is a sham as the Brussels Presidium makes all the laws that count and is itself unaccountable to the proletariat. Populations are beginning to cotton on and want more democracy not less.
|
|
By:
anyone who thinks that defenceless citizens being attacked with batons by their own police is perfectly fine needs to have a word with themselves.
|
|
By:
After today's events this cannot possibly end well for either side.
