There is the truth and there is false truths called religions. God and Jesus did not command us to build clubs? halls? cathedrals? the church as st.Paul said is the people who believe in Christ and truth. you may be baptist, catholic, methodist or non denominational(demonidational)? within those structural mishaps you will meet Christians. but they have married the world. They will be saved, if they believe in Christ over themselves. we were instructed to meet in fellowship, not to perform rituals. Not to vote for a pastor to be an intermediary? no middlemen are needed. you speak to God. You are the priest. stop handing it off to others. the minister or priest in these organizations are the same as you. they are not holy men. All of us are equals. |

Poor role models and PR. ISIS, Ian Paisley, Westboro Baptist Church etc..... These are the headline grabbers and what most people fixate upon rather than the millions and millions of believers who go about their business in quiet calm, gaining some kind of strength from their faith |

rodge is right. Sad thing is religion has the capacity to be a real force for good at a local level. The pastoral side of it, enforcing the community and helping people when they need it most. That's all something that religion can and does do.
The big issue - apart from that it relies on a make believe big man in the sky - is the fact that it's all just a power trip. And is with all power, it's rarely a meritocracy but just goes to who is the cruellest, the most manipulative or the richest. Power corrupts, and what's more powerful than getting people to bend to your will at the promise of something happening after they die and hence is utterly unproveable. |

I agree with Porky. But even at local level there can be a great misuse of power and influence by 'leaders'
ie - 'you haven't been to church, synagogue, mosque lateley' the priest or imam will be round to 'see' you!!! - if you get my drift. Cultural and religious pressure - how you stand to be seen in the community etc etc. Family pressure etc. All intertwined with the 'religion' |

The basis of your whimsical references to these magical symbolisms within the bible are taken from people who want it to be true.
What is unrefutable is that the bible was copied and translated over and over, some works within for nearly 3000 years until printing presses. Now you believe fallible man to be completely infallible and make no mistakes? I don't even think it is possible to translate something into another language and retain its 'magical' code. |

the septuagint - copied by ptolomy 2nd - the same. if you ever have seen a rabbi copy a scroll you'd know they are thee most anal guys on the planet. one mistake and the whole scroll goes in the trash. there are over 5000 scrolls of early chritian new testement fragments that tally with the copy today. there was also a first century practice of making death masks out of paper mache. the makers would go out into market places and look for old bits of papyrus. and a few of the snagged fragments were new testement fragments, and no change in the text. so your suspicions are bogus. the only attempt was made by Madame Helena P. Blavatsky, a century ago. But that was spotted quickly. If you stick to the KJV you are solid. The original hebrew and Greek exists in massive amounts - all copies are the same. where are you getting this piffle - is there a big atheist book of piffle facts about the bible. I think many people are not against religion but just find it strange that there are so many gullible people still around. I, personally find it distasteful that they are allowed to run schools which brainwash their ideology into children. Every religion will take money from their members to perpetuate their beliefs and of course these poor gullible unfortunates hand it over. Have your religion by all means, but don't preach to me or object when I laugh at the sheer absurdity of the concept of god.

It's surprising that people are still boiling Christianity down to a choice between whether the stuff in the Bible actually happened or not.
Many Christians like myself dismissed the stories in the bible as fiction long before we left school. So why are we still Christians? The answer shouldn't be hard to find. |
