In his essay "Why I Deny Religion, How Silly and Fantastic It Is, and Why I'm a Dedicated and Vociferous Bright," Randi, who identifies himself as an atheist,[86] has stated that many accounts in religious texts, including the virgin birth, the miracles of Jesus Christ, and the parting of the Red Sea by Moses, are not believable. For example, Randi refers to the Virgin Mary as being "impregnated by a ghost of some sort, and as a result produced a son who could walk on water, raise the dead, turn water into wine, and multiply loaves of bread and fishes" and questions how Adam and Eve "could have two sons, one of whom killed the other, and yet managed to populate the earth without committing incest." He writes that, compared to the Bible, "The Wizard of Oz is more believable. And much more fun."[87]

However, he also highlights: "I’ve said it before: there are two sorts of atheists. One sort claims that there is no deity, the other claims that there is no evidence that proves the existence of a deity; I belong to the latter group, because if I were to claim that no god exists, I would have to produce evidence to establish that claim, and I cannot. Religious persons have by far the easier position; they say they believe in a deity because that’s their preference, and they’ve read it in a book. That’s their right."

One of the first books to come off the printing press when it was invented was the Bible. And it’s still the world’s best-selling book. An anonymous author has written: ‘It contains the mind of God, the state of man, the way of salvation, the fate of sinners, and the happiness of believers. It is a light to direct you, food to nourish you, and comfort to cheer you. It is the traveller’s road map, the pilot’s compass, the soldier’s weapon, and the player’s game plan. It’s a mine of incredible wealth, and a river of genuine joy. Its doctrines are holy, its precepts are binding, its histories are true, and its decisions are immutable. Christ is its grand subject, your good its design, and the glory of God its end. Read it to be wise, believe it to be safe, practise it to be spiritually healthy. Read it slowly, frequently and prayerfully. Let it fill your memory, rule your heart, and guide your steps. It is given to you in life, will be opened at the judgment, and be remembered forever. It involves the highest responsibility, will reward the greatest labour, and judge those who trifle with its sacred contents.’ The Bible is ‘the word of our God [which] endures forever’ (Isaiah 40:8 NIV 2011 Edition). Most of us respect the Bible; the trouble is we don’t read it daily and put it into practice. After hearing a discussion on various translations of the Bible, one man said: ‘I prefer my mother’s translation, because she translated it into everyday life.’ Are you doing that?

This is why there is animosity on both sides
non believers are fed up with men in robes telling us oh the bible stories aren't to be taken literally(Notice this'concession')is a relatively modern one due to religionists unable to reconcile a bronze age narrative with the advances in modern science and culture.

Wise words today ...

The people of Israel ended up living as slaves in Babylon because they disobeyed God and decided to do their own thing. And they paid a high price for it. They lost their homes, their jobs, their freedom, and their self-respect. Has that happened to you? Well, there’s good news. God says: ‘The plans I have for you…are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope. In those days when you pray, I will listen. If you look for me wholeheartedly, you will find me…I will end your captivity and restore your fortunes’ (Jeremiah 29:11-14 NLT). That means God still has a plan for your life. And if you seek Him ‘wholeheartedly’, He will reveal it to you. You ask, ‘How do you know God still has a plan for me?’ Because you’re still breathing! He has a plan for every single person He ever created, and it never goes out of date. Unlike the milk in your supermarket that has an expiration date after which it can’t be used, God’s plans don’t have expiration dates. Even if you’ve gone astray and missed His plan for years, that plan can still swing into operation the moment you turn your life over to Him and fall into line with His will. Now the plan may be somewhat modified from what it would have been twenty years ago if you’d paid attention, but that doesn’t stop God. He can adapt to fit anything that comes up in any life that’s ever lived, including yours.

Like I asked of zorro but never got a reasoned response; how is it the responsibility or even a possibility to love someone or thing that you have no first hand knowledge of?
You can't train yourself to love something whether you experience it or not, love is just an expression of great feeling that is a bi-product of other people's actions. In this instance, to love god would take god to revel himself first, and for love to grow.
What the religious suggest is that the things around you are attributable to him and that is what you should love him for, but then say the bad things arn't him but are because of you, or satan or some other thing.
Reasoned people required reasoned evidence of the situation, that is why we ask questions of everything to determine the likeliest of outcomes.
The leap of faith to which you refer is just positive thinking; if you want something badly enough you convince yourself you gain it.
'Virtue is and of itself the reward', i.e.. you reward yourself for doing the 'right' thing, not others backslapping you, that was said 2500 years ago in ancient Greece. We now know that pleasure derives from the chemical toxins released in the brain that stimulate the synapses. Therefore when you seek something from the unknown such as god you translate any and all stimulus to be attributable to the thing you want to find. It doesn't prove the thing you wanted actually exists.

God reveals himself to those with good hearts that can hear, and not just talk.
it's said that it's a sick mind indeed that only talks and never listens.
it's said in the bible that faith comes through the HEARING of God's WORD.
Not the reading of God's word.
God is picking the ones with good hearts. the ones not steeped in PRIDE and
high wisdom of the Greeks(proofs). he does not want the self righteous.
only the sinners and the humble. People that understand the wretched existence
of life. the good time charlies are excluded from the kingdom of God.

Asking for proof - only proves you are lost to God.

if you believe in God, in Jesus.. you are saved. because you believe you can never
lose your grace. anyone who cries out to the lord is saved.

Trilby wise words today.

Your post is a good like many others are on here.

My own experience .. My Catholic mother had me baptised and I remember going to church when I was a child but in my teens I stopped going and done other things teens do. But in later years I became selfish and broke good women's hearts by lying and cheating on them.

Then recently I cheated on the mother of my daughter and she asked me to be truthful and I was for the 1st time honest. I had to change somehow because what I was doing was breaking good people through my selfishness. I never knew either I was suffering from depression for over 30 yrs a doctor told me. But no excuses I was the problem no one else.

I never knew taking holy communion without confession was wrong. Only when my wife told a priest what I had done did he tell me I shouldn't have taken communion.

So I seeked help via confession and wise words from our priest. And turned my life right around and since that day I've never had depression since. Never miss Sunday mass either and each day I realise how lucky I am even though I have a child with disabilities.

From my teens to adulthood I forsaken God but he never forsaken me and I am not worthy of his Love but he had a plan  Not all evil is bad as virgin Mary said because sometimes evil brings us back to God.

My wife doesn't trust me and still now I swear part of her hates me. But I know if I didn't do what I did to her I'd still be living that selfish way and God's holy doors where closing upon me. Now he has told me through prayer they are reopened as long as I do not become a hypocrite and lead that old life again.

How would you describe the pay off you seem to think you receive as a result of being accepted in god's will?

Have you ever taken synthetic drugs btw?
Report dustybin August 13, 2017 3:03 PM BST
From my experience the vast majority lay claim to something glorious, but have no idea of scale since most have never taken MDMA or similar.
You have a couple of those and reflect upon what you think you have without them.
Report Diff-rent August 14, 2017 1:29 PM BST
Sorry I do not understand the drugs question ?

I've not touched drugs since the 90s.
Report dustybin August 14, 2017 2:27 PM BST
What I am asking is for you to describe the experience that being evangelical does to you.
If you have taken drugs then we can boil it down.
Feelings derive from the pleasure principle, the production of dopamine, serotonin etc that is naturally regulated.
The drugs like MDMA act as a catalyst in the flooding of the system which results in extreme well being or 'euphoria'.

Now we know that by definition no experience will naturally reproduce these synthetic highs, if they did your heart would collapse as the bi-product of the toxin's effect on internal organs (which is why the human body regulates their production)

When you do something that 'your constitution' determines to be something that encourages endorphins release then you experience a very small amount of pleasure (like viewing a photo of your family....upto say, bungie jumping)
But nothing puts you into a state of euphoria naturally.

So where does the satisfaction you experience come in relation to MDMA?

And cant you then determine that the feelings you experience are simply a result of chemicals present in your brain?
Report dustybin August 14, 2017 2:29 PM BST
In short, god is just the experience you have as a result of chemicals, and wont ever be as strong as the pleasure man can create in a lab. (IMO)
Report dustybin August 14, 2017 2:45 PM BST
Lets face it, even from those individuals who believe in god, very few ever say god have literally spoken to him; its generally an interpretation of some event that they assume to be god.
Now when I referred to a 'constitution' I mean in one way how receptive to certain things an individual is.
For E.G, those that 'seek' god have the desire to 'find' him, and so are open to suggestion, however small or unlikely the association.
That 'experience' actually encourages the endorphin release which they interpret to be the experience of god, when it was as I mentioned earlier 'the individual rewarding themself' by natural means.

May I ask this question to non-believers and please answer truthfully.

Do you put any trust in the Royal Family if not why ?

The Queen of England acknowledges God and she has said this on many occasions.

Samuel arguably one of the greatest prophets said....

6 Then Samuel said to the people, “It is the Lord who appointed Moses and Aaron and brought your ancestors up out of Egypt. 7 Now then, stand here, because I am going to confront you with evidence before the Lord as to all the righteous acts performed by the Lord for you and your ancestors.

8 “After Jacob entered Egypt, they cried to the Lord for help, and the Lord sent Moses and Aaron, who brought your ancestors out of Egypt and settled them in this place.

9 “But they forgot the Lord their God; so he sold them into the hand of Sisera, the commander of the army of Hazor, and into the hands of the Philistines and the king of Moab, who fought against them. 10 They cried out to the Lord and said, ‘We have sinned; we have forsaken the Lord and served the Baals and the Ashtoreths. But now deliver us from the hands of our enemies, and we will serve you.’ 11 Then the Lord sent Jerub-Baal,[a] Barak,[b] Jephthah and Samuel,[c] and he delivered you from the hands of your enemies all around you, so that you lived in safety.

12 “But when you saw that Nahash king of the Ammonites was moving against you, you said to me, ‘No, we want a king to rule over us’—even though the Lord your God was your king. 13 Now here is the king you have chosen, the one you asked for; see, the Lord has set a king over you. 14 If you fear the Lord and serve and obey him and do not rebel against his commands, and if both you and the king who reigns over you follow the Lord your God—good! 15 But if you do not obey the Lord, and if you rebel against his commands, his hand will be against you, as it was against your ancestors.

16 “Now then, stand still and see this great thing the Lord is about to do before your eyes! 17 Is it not wheat harvest now? I will call on the Lord to send thunder and rain. And you will realize what an evil thing you did in the eyes of the Lord when you asked for a king.”

18 Then Samuel called on the Lord, and that same day the Lord sent thunder and rain. So all the people stood in awe of the Lord and of Samuel.

19 The people all said to Samuel, “Pray to the Lord your God for your servants so that we will not die, for we have added to all our other sins the evil of asking for a king.”

20 “Do not be afraid,” Samuel replied. “You have done all this evil; yet do not turn away from the Lord, but serve the Lord with all your heart. 21 Do not turn away after useless idols. They can do you no good, nor can they rescue you, because they are useless. 22 For the sake of his great name the Lord will not reject his people, because the Lord was pleased to make you his own. 23 As for me, far be it from me that I should sin against the Lord by failing to pray for you. And I will teach you the way that is good and right. 24 But be sure to fear the Lord and serve him faithfully with all your heart; consider what great things he has done for you. 25 Yet if you persist in doing evil, both you and your king will perish.”

The Queen has never hidden her strong Christian faith. In celebration of her 90th birthday, Mark Greene presents ten significant quotes from her famous speeches

The Queen doesn’t reveal what she thinks about a whole host of subjects, but about her trust in Christ she has been open, clear and direct. Here are ten quotes that show something of the Queen’s relationship with Christ and how that strengthens her and shapes the way she lives and works

1. Putting her service in the hands of God
'I declare before you all that my whole life whether it be long or short shall be devoted to your service and the service of our great imperial family to which we all belong. But I shall not have strength to carry out this resolution alone unless you join it with me, as I now invite you to do: I know that your support will be unfailingly given. God help me to make good my vow, and God bless all of you who are willing to share it.' (21st birthday radio address, 1947)

2. The only way to live her life
'I know just how much I rely on my faith to guide me through the good times and the bad. Each day is a new beginning. I know that the only way to live my life is to try to do what is right, to take the long view, to give of my best in all that the day brings, and to put my trust in God!' (2002)

3. Why Jesus is unique
'Although we are capable of great acts of kindness, history teaches us that we sometimes need saving from ourselves – from our recklessness or our greed. God sent into the world a unique person – neither a philosopher nor a general (important though they are) – but a Saviour, with the power to forgive.' (2011)

4. What sustains her in difficult times
'To many of us our beliefs are of fundamental importance. For me the teachings of Christ and my own personal accountability before God provide a framework in which I try to lead my life. I, like so many of you, have drawn great comfort in difficult times from Christ's words and example.' (2000)
Report Diff-rent August 16, 2017 7:34 PM BST
5. How Christ is the inspiration in her life
'For me, the life of Jesus Christ, the Prince of Peace, whose birth we celebrate today, is an inspiration and an anchor in my life. A role-model of reconciliation and forgiveness, he stretched out his hands in love, acceptance and healing. Christ’s example has taught me to seek to respect and value all people of whatever faith or none.' (2014)

6. God's gift of reconciliation
'The gift I would most value next year is that reconciliation should be found wherever it is needed. A reconciliation which would bring peace and security to families and neighbours at present suffering and torn apart. Remember that good spreads outwards and every little does help. Mighty things from small beginnings grow as indeed they grew from the small child of Bethlehem.' (1976)

7. Jesus gives us strength to follow him
'Christ not only revealed to us the truth in his teachings. He lived by what he believed and gave us the strength to try to do the same - and, finally, on the cross, he showed the supreme example of physical and moral courage.' (1981)

8. How God restored love to our lives through Jesus
'This is the time of year when we remember that God sent his only son 'to serve, not to be served'. He restored love and service to the centre of our lives in the person of Jesus Christ.' (2012)

9. The challenge of Christian discipleship
'In difficult times we may be tempted to find excuses for self-indulgence and to wash our hands of responsibility. Christmas stands for the opposite... we need to go out and look for opportunities to help those less fortunate than ourselves, even if that service demands sacrifice.' (1980)

10. Why no one is beyond God's love
'For Christians, as for all people of faith, reflection, meditation and prayer help us to renew ourselves in God’s love, as we strive daily to become better people. The Christmas message shows us that this love is for everyone. There is no one beyond its reach.' (2013)

God sits and watches and doesn't react. He stiffen's a person's heart and allows them to continue doing wrong. He waits... And he waits.... Giving that person every opportunity to open their heart and turn away from that life. And he waits even longer...

Then finally he loses patience with them because he can see their true intentions and takes action.

And when he turns their life upside down they still can't see what they've done wrong.

So an Evil person with no apparent motive suddenly does a wicked spiteful thing....

All the contrivances come down to a single point.
A question.
That is whether you believe free will actually exists or not, and that the decisions you make which are the difficult option are acts of implied devinity, or actually virtuous.

For me I see every decision a human makes as being influenced by some form of coercion, and that decisions made for 'good' are actually sacfrificial acts based on the common indoctrination of community.

You could argue that your mind isnt anything more than a collection of experiences built upon the teaching of your parents.
IE you are just the product of the environment in which your mind was moulded (and desires of others).

I rather suspect you are well meaning Zorro but its just such a ridiculous suggestion.
That accepting or not accepting a story to be true is the whole determining factor that carries such weight.

Whether Jesus lived in the form they suggest and died in sacrifice or whether he didnt is either true or false, neither of these factors being impacted by whether I believe the story or not.

Like I said, what 'we' choose in life is determined by an array of imponderables, most of which are beyond our control, Id love to know which bit of 'us' is the bit in the 'free' of 'freewill'.

Re the opening question. I know very few people who are 'against religion' in general. Even if most people think it a bit daft, they are happy to let it be, as it does not impact their own lives. People will be 'against' any particular religion which does impact on their own lives though, this is quite a natural reaction I would think.

We are asked to believe a 2000 year old story with more than enough inconsistencies to make a fantasy writer blush. This in support of a deity who cannot be perceived through any of our senses and persistently hides under his stone allowing the most awful atrocities imaginable to occur uncontested.
Is it any wonder that fewer and fewer people take such belief seriously.

fantasy writers and novels appeared between 1100 AD and 1700AD, Japaneses writers earlier than the western tradition.

the Greek myths came 2500 years after Adam. when the bible explains that fallen angels where on the earth.
Nephilim being the hybrids of the angels and the tribes of the earth. this spawned the plethora of GODS myths
that took over - all dating to that time. Fallen Angels would be like Gods to Man. three destroyed two cities
in the old testament. the flood was to get rid of them. it was a contamination of God's plan.
Every culture on earth dates them to this period, the vanishing of them again matches with the Bible's Account.

a Zeus looks a lot like a Satan? lightning bolts and lesser gods. Satan had command of a legion of angels.
a family of Gods. but they were not gods, they are the fallen. A description of the events exist in the book of Enoch.
youtube.

Again - the novel was not introduced into literature in the west till the 17th century? to compare the bible
to another 'story' is to compare a cathedral to a turd. it stands apart.  you are idiots.

I don't think many people if anyone, object to private personal devotion.
Unfortunately many zealots and organised religions want to force society to comply with their vision and there's the rub. Since the reformation, Christianity has been largely defanged in this respect, and the separation of church from the legislative, executive and judiciary is to be welcomed. Not all religions are amenable to this and I would like to ask Diff-rent and other religionists how would they relish living in an Islamic state?

the answer is simple - the people in those churches? are the church. all who accept
christ's sacrifice and covering are saved. the believers are the church.

seed is dropped and some seed seek the light(Jesus)- they germinate.
the other seed never seek, never find Christ, so never receive God's Grace.

So please do not let your heart be burdened by this world and except what ever suffering comes our way.

More food for thought for those of a religious disposition.

"If there is any kind of supreme being, I told myself, it is up to all of us to become his moral superior.”

Terry Pratchett (Unseen Academicals).
Report Foinavon May 25, 2018 2:28 PM BST
Here is the quote in full context.

The Patrician took a sip of his beer. “I have told this to few people, gentlemen, and I suspect I never will again, but one day when I was a young boy on holiday in Uberwald I was walking along the bank of a stream when I saw a mother otter with her cubs. A very endearing sight, I’m sure you will agree, and even as I watched, the mother otter dived into the water and came up with a plump salmon, which she subdued and dragged on to a half-submerged log. As she ate it, while of course it was still alive, the body split and I remember to this day the sweet pinkness of its roes as they spilled out, much to the delight of the baby otters who scrambled over themselves to feed on the delicacy. One of nature’s wonders, gentlemen: mother and children dining upon mother and children. And that’s when I first learned about evil. It is built into the very nature of the universe. Every world spins in pain. If there is any kind of supreme being, I told myself, it is up to all of us to become his moral superior.”
The two wizards exchanged a glance. Vetinari was staring into the depths of his beer mug and they were glad that they did not know what he saw in there.

Terry Pratchett.
