Free tv licence
bus pass ( 1 chap I know leaves his car at home, gets the free bus to save on car parking)
free prescriptions ( I know of 2 who offered to pay but were told 'no')
winter fuel allowance
And.....

First it was the Doleys
then it was the immigrants
now we're after the pensions.

Only a question of time we will be switching off the people on life support to say on the leccy.

She's cutting the payment to those OAPs that have a reasonable income.
My pensions take me above the average wage yet I get £200 heating allowance.
You think I should?

Reasonable income ? No figures have been quoted.
It will require a ' means test'  on 10,million pensioners. !
That will cost a staggering amount of money in administration.

And also be totally useless. I was listening to a prog on the radio a few years ago about a means tested benefit. The interviewer asked  how the claimants' had to prove the value of their income and assets. The answer "They don't. We take their word for it."

Those pensioners living in million pound homes. So what?

How much in tax would they have paid during their lives?

Yet someone who hasn't paid anything into the system, can get on the bus without the inconvenience of having the correct change, same with trains (even more inconvenience.)

Prescriptions are another item that would cause inconvenience especially when they're multiple.

And this is after the person has paid many times more into the system than a scrounger who gets the lot buckshee.
By:

It's an upside down system when those who pay for it don't get it, and those that haven't paid anything at all can get the lot.

The winter fuel allowance surprisingly is a net killer.

Study after study has found no reduction in the 'excess winter deaths' statistics following its introduction.
And in 2016 Fournier and Johansson at the OECD published a paper which found that an increase of 1% of GDP in pensioner hand outs reduces GDP by 2%. The result is the country is poorer, and poorer countries have shorter less happy lives, on average.

If you want to get an extra £300 a year to pensioners who need it, to spend on anything of their choosing, because that is what the WFA is, then stick £6/week on the rates of State Pension, Pension Credit, and the applicable amounts of benefit claims. Pensioners do not lose the ability to budget accordingly a year after their 64th birthday.
This would mean the extra income is taxable, so the government would get 0, 20, 40 or 45% of it back depending on income.

SO THE 100,S and 100,s of mp,s,pundits etc who over the last 25 years on the airwaves have been saying means testing these benefits will cost more money than it saves have been lying, universal credit already 5 years behind in its roll out so who,s going to means test these pensioners, not the same private results based cowboys who made such a mess of stopping invalid, pip payments

Why does everyone have this vision of an OAP huddled around a gas ring trying to keep warm ? Get out on the golf courses all over the country to see how their suffering Crazy
By:

The means testing will simply be that all those on Pension Credit will get it and the rest will not.

Which gives people another reason for not contributing towards their own pension.

The Scots will still get it in full. That's the same ones that don't pay for prescriptions and get their bus passes at 60 -paid for by the magic money tree . The West Coast of Scotland is warmer than the East Coast of Northumberland due to the Gulf Stream but no account is taken of that. I think the Tories majority will be less than it would have been if they hadn't announced this.

Does anyone really think this has anything to do with the weather?
This unnecessary profligacy was introduced in order to gain votes and has cost billions.
Benefits, once introduced, are notoriously difficult to reduce or remove regardless of whether they serve any useful purpose.

you're going to need heating wherever you live in Europe - nowhere is 'warm'  in winter .

the allowance is just part of the pension , same as the licence -it's payment back for what you have paid in .

the rich don't benefit as they are already rich and old and about to snuff it  -  but the younger beneficeries WILL benefit  - likewise car owners won't benefit.

whats the point of having a car if you use the bus pass to save on parking (and i've heard)  wear and tear ,and petrol ? Laugh

Once the uk leave Europe it will cause unemployment ,and this will result in a domino effect.
people who are unemployed will be forced to join the british army and conscription will be introduced otherwise they will lose their giro. The Army will need all these new soldiers to protect the uk borders because leaving the EU will cause a fresh charge of millions of refugees fleeing wars to go to England and Europe will be only to delighted to solve their own problem by allowing it to happen.
And that's only the start of it.
Theresa is planning for Brexit hence the idea of low corporate tax to attract German supermarkets and German businesses to move to England.

Ireland will suffer most, and it will not surprise me if France and Italy combined with the backing of Europe will block the med sea to stop migrants crossing into Europe leaving them with only the british isles and Ireland for them to travel to.

There was this old boy sitting in the pub supping a pint and looking at a pic of Jeremy Corbyn in the Daily Mirror.

The old boy sighs and says aloud, whatever is gonna happen if Jeremy Corbyn gets in.
A chap standing at the bar retorts, you must be a supporter reading the Mirror..what don't you like about Jeremy.

The old boy says, well, I am a staunch Labour man, but the way I see him, he's a 'Post Turtle'. Not being familiar with the term, the chap asks the old boy what is a Post Turtle??

Well, the old boy says..when you are driving down a country road and you see a fence post with a turtle balanced on top, that's a Post Turtle.

The old boy seeing the puzzled look on the chap's face, explained... well, you know he didn't get up there by himself, he doesn't belong up there, he doesn't know what to do while he's up there, he's elevated beyond his ability to function, and you just wonder what dumb arse put him up there to begin with.

So true. You used to get your pension at 65 because if you managed to get to 65 you were clapped out and hadn't got long anyway

1971 is correct forget all this shoite about people living longer ,when you get to 60 and going to a funeral everyweek and hear of someone you no dying through the grapevine ,you,ll realise nothing has changed,
and even before anyone has had a chance to live long enough to test the living longer theory, companies with big pension defecits are using evidence to say not to far in the future people will be dying earlier, so taking the pressure off their pension schemes,
how can news bulletins spend 29 mins everyday telling us about obesity epeidemic ,diabetes ,alcohol dependency, social care crisis ,nhs, crisis,no money for anything, then spend the last 30 seconds telling us all we,re going to live longer and be healthy for longer

This may have to apply to our Irish European friends also, post Brexit.

Who could deny that?

These workers of today are going to get a shock when they retire. They simply don't realise what they've lost.

The pensioners of today are benefitting from final salary schemes, most of these have been ended.

The pensioners of today are benefitting from private pensions. The dividend tax and low interest rates have made these very poor value and simply a waste of money for most.

The pensioners of today are benefitting from SERPS and the Second State Pensions. Probably worth two thirds as much again as the basic state pension to someone on average wages?

If the workers of today have never know poverty they'd better ready for it.

There will be few happily retired workers at working class level living the life of Riley when they retire.

We have been living beyond our means for generations.

Governments continually borrowing more to satisfy the squealing mass of voters   "We want more ,and we want it now! "

The debt can just gets kicked continually down the road - "the kids in the playground can pay it all back "

We are ALL to blame , nobody wants to give up anything themselves - we are all feel somehow entitled to our lifestyle. Get somebody else to pay.

We can't even get close to balancing the annual books let alone paying back anything of the  trillions we already owe.

that steve webb is a magician introduced the flat rate pension and intodays terms any younger people eventually getting enough qualifying years will get a maximum of 155 instead of 200 plus under the old system and people were cheering as though they,d been given something, all this because people didnt understand the state pension,2nd state pen and serps and the government and mr webb just played on their ignorance to introduce a worse and unfairer system than the one they replaced, like i say the mans a magician instead of been sacked got parliamantarian of the year

Means testing OAPs couldn't be simpler.

Ask the HMRC if they pay income tax.

Tax their winter fuel allowance at the rate they pay income tax.

At least then the Govt get back some money.

This chatter about 'i've paid in all my life' is plain ignorance.

The tax and NI system was never designed to pay for people living decades into retirement.

As others have said on here, many of the baby boomers are the wealthiest in society. To give them tons of free stuff is foolish. The sums of how this country runs itself don't add up. Anyone able to contribute more should do so.
