I've worked hard all my life and am now retired and have more money now than I know what to do with so why should someone give me £200 towards winter fuel. I've tried to give it back but the red tape is impossible so it goes to charity for the aged. I shall try not to freeze to death next winter.

Reasonable income ? No figures have been quoted.
It will require a ' means test'  on 10,million pensioners. !
That will cost a staggering amount of money in administration.

And also be totally useless. I was listening to a prog on the radio a few years ago about a means tested benefit. The interviewer asked  how the claimants' had to prove the value of their income and assets. The answer "They don't. We take their word for it."

Those pensioners living in million pound homes. So what?

How much in tax would they have paid during their lives?

Yet someone who hasn't paid anything into the system, can get on the bus without the inconvenience of having the correct change, same with trains (even more inconvenience.)

Prescriptions are another item that would cause inconvenience especially when they're multiple.

And this is after the person has paid many times more into the system than a scrounger who gets the lot buckshee.

It's an upside down system when those who pay for it don't get it, and those that haven't paid anything at all can get the lot.

The winter fuel allowance surprisingly is a net killer.

Study after study has found no reduction in the 'excess winter deaths' statistics following its introduction.
And in 2016 Fournier and Johansson at the OECD published a paper which found that an increase of 1% of GDP in pensioner hand outs reduces GDP by 2%. The result is the country is poorer, and poorer countries have shorter less happy lives, on average.

If you want to get an extra £300 a year to pensioners who need it, to spend on anything of their choosing, because that is what the WFA is, then stick £6/week on the rates of State Pension, Pension Credit, and the applicable amounts of benefit claims. Pensioners do not lose the ability to budget accordingly a year after their 64th birthday.
This would mean the extra income is taxable, so the government would get 0, 20, 40 or 45% of it back depending on income.

SO THE 100,S and 100,s of mp,s,pundits etc who over the last 25 years on the airwaves have been saying means testing these benefits will cost more money than it saves have been lying,universal credit already 5 years behind in its roll out so who,s going to means test these pensioners,not the same private results based cowboys who made such a mess of stopping invalid,pip payments

The means testing will simply be that all those on Pension Credit will get it and the rest will not.

Which gives people another reason for not contributing towards their own pension.

The Scots will still get it in full. That's the same ones that don't pay for prescriptions and get their bus passes at 60 -paid for by the magic money tree . The West Coast of Scotland is warmer than the East Coast of Northumberland due to the Gulf Stream but no account is taken of that. I think the Tories majority will be less than it would have been if they hadn't announced this.

This unnecessary profligacy was introduced in order to gain votes and has cost billions.
Benefits, once introduced, are notoriously difficult to reduce or remove regardless of whether they serve any useful purpose.

you're going to need heating wherever you live in Europe - nowhere is 'warm'  in winter .

the allowance is just part of the pension , same as the licence -it's payment back for what you have paid in . 

the rich don't benefit as they are already rich and old and about to snuff it  -  but the younger beneficeries WILL benefit  - likewise car owners won't benefit.

The pensioners of today are benefitting from final salary schemes, most of these have been ended.

The pensioners of today are benefitting from private pensions. The dividend tax and low interest rates have made these very poor value and simply a waste of money for most.

The pensioners of today are benefitting from SERPS and the Second State Pensions. Probably worth two thirds as much again as the basic state pension to someone on average wages? 

If the workers of today have never know poverty they'd better ready for it.

There will be few happily retired workers at working class level living the life of Riley when they retire.

We have been living beyond our means for generations.

Governments continually borrowing more to satisfy the squealing mass of voters   "We want more ,and we want it now! "

Means testing OAPs couldn't be simpler.

Ask the HMRC if they pay income tax.

Tax their winter fuel allowance at the rate they pay income tax.

At least then the Govt get back some money.


This chatter about 'i've paid in all my life' is plain ignorance.

The tax and NI system was never designed to pay for people living decades into retirement.

As others have said on here, many of the baby boomers are the wealthiest in society. To give them tons of free stuff is foolish. The sums of how this country runs itself don't add up. Anyone able to contribute more should do so.

After the baby boomers have left us. And their pensions that they worked hard for have ended. What will those that follow get in the form of pensions?

It's right there above, at today's rates £155 a week. That's your lot.

Very few final salary schemes.
No private pensions with generous annuity rates.
No Second State pension or SERPS.
No retirement at 60-65.

Enjoy your retirement - especially the ones here who begrudge pensioners a comfy last decade or so of life. 
Because it's the one you are fighting for.

If a country can't finance its health service through those in work there is something wrong with the fundamentals and taking money from pensioners is not going to solve that.
Pensioners left school at 14 or perhaps 12 and spent their lives working, it was a very long road .
Now we are lucky if we can get people out of university before they are 30, and they spend very few years working, its miraculous they expect a health service as well.

The labour movement after making giant strides after the war, and wasn't doing too badly up until Labour were elected in 1997. Is now going backwards far quicker than anyone ever thought likely.
And Labour are as much to blame for its decline as the Tories - more in fact.

So in England people who value a university education at more than the price will go
And the university has to treat the students like paying customers

Same principle applies to tolls - if a bridge is built to take say 100 million crossings in its lifetime, then stick a price on it which means people will pay to cross it when its worth more than the cost of the toll to get across ( or half that if sharing with one other ).

And if said bridge is paid for by tolls and you promise to stop charging tolls once it's paid for, don't renege on the promise and instead increase the toll.
