Jamie Oliver didn't say this, the CEO of his restaurant group did.
Which was pretty f*cking low anyway.
He went on
"Blagden said a combination of high costs on ingredients, staff training and lower footfall had forced the restaurant closures."
Which translates to "not enough people were prepared to pay £14 for a unspectacular burger + fries outside of the more affluent metropolitan areas.

Getting very fed up with companies who aren't doing so well saying Brexit is to blame. Yesterday it was Next (the BBC of course loved that), yet strangely John Lewis was doing better. How does that work? Did Brexit not affect them in the same way? Why surely it must have. The effect is the same, the better companies will survive.
Today it's oliver. Are other restaurants not affected by Brexit. For example the one closing in Scotland is in Aberdeen, which is in the middle of a downturn due to the oil price collapse. Was brexit to blame for that? It's most proabably been struggling for ages and brexit is nothing to do with it.
I've eaten in a Jamie Oliver restaurant a few times and I thought it was overpriced for small portions and if I remember correctly there was no draught beer just overpriced little bottles. Total disappointment. I wouldn't chose to go there myself.

Brand 'Jamie Oliver' is past it's sell by date in the UK.
He knows it. Italian produce has increased but if he was THAT good his brand would be able to shoulder it.

he's created so many new jobs and paid so much tax to the country whilst improving diets for school kids and relentless campaigning against sugar, yet he still gets so much hate, some people

I don't "hate" him but I think his restaurants are overpriced and not very good and are trading entirely on his fame. But what I'm annoyed at is DISHONESTY and taking us for MUGS.
As Jack indicates, what % of his costs are food ingredients? I'm guessing not that much, his portions are small but he likes plush expensive locations.
And what costs are affected by Brexit? The pound dropped against the dollar but hasn't changed that much against the Euro (presuming he's buying some ingredients from say italy). Pound - Euro is approx what it was 2013-2014, that's all.
So how is Brexit to blame? For making a percentage of a percentage of his costs revert to the same as they were 2 years ago? His competitors will have the same. No, we don't like liars, and this bandwagon of blaming everything on Brexit.
At least he's not blaming Trump....

In fact I just looked at the commodity price of Wheat which is the main ingredient of pasta dishes and thus I presume Jamie Oliver dishes. It keeps coming down. $425 today, 500 2016, 575 2015, 750 in 2014, 900 mid 2013. http://www.nasdaq.com/markets/wheat.aspx?timeframe=5y
It's like an inverse Wheatxit, he should be raking it in. Brexit my ars*.

But it's just back to what is was 2-3 years ago, and the traded price of his principle ingredient, wheat, has basically halved since 2013. I'm pretty sure his little lukewarm dishes are from what I remember are mostly italian style pasta.
He probably bulk buys it from LIDL.

Wise words donny, i can only imagine those with a few spare squid would accept a hollow belly whilst waltzing home.
I would image they are oblivious to the plight of the Brexiteers.

I love italian food, yes, go to a good independent, it'll probably be cheaper and better. It's all in the name. But then, we live in a world where people will pay £1000s for the name stuck on a handbag...

Maybe if he didn't try to charge £20 for a £10 meal he may get more business.
Sticks his name to the restaurant and thinks he can double the prices of the food.

I was at Lords when he was selling a steak sandwich for £20. He sold 5. He seems to think his name alone will entice people to pay double the going rate.

"Sorry love, this has never happened before. You could normally swing a small monkey off the thing when I'm aroused but .. it's just not going to happen tonight. No! It's not that I can't get it up, it's just .. this whole brexit thing, y'know?"

The Lasagne shocked me. A bit of stwed oxtail, pasta and cheese. £14 farkin quid! Id rather have chicken madras, pilau rice, bombay potato, keema nan and poppadums for that thank you very much.

Another thing to watch out for is a fair sized tip is AFAIK included in the bill which isn't the usual in my experience, so you might accidentally tip double. I'm not sure if it's always added, so check the bill in case. Not saying not to tip, just be aware of it. Last time I went to one the best part was the waiter was really good.

Oliver is not being honest to my mind, many businesses are going to find it harder this year, particularly catering as they will have to increase the minimum wage AND contribute to workplace pensions for all their staff. It is sad they should try to pin that on brexit instead of being honest.

It is amazing the number of celebrity chefs who get themselves in trouble when they try opening their
own restaurants or restaurant chains.
Also if I went to a Jamie Olivier restaurant, I would expect him to be there.
I agree with treetop as well.

I've watched a few of the Kitchen Nightmares in the US series. I'd be more interetested in eating in a Ramsay restaurant to see if his food is as good as his arrogance would suggest it must be :) Probably a bit more expensive than even oliver though!

gery, jamie is reportedly worth sveral hundred million so he aint in no trouble what so ever.
it always amazed me that someone who reached the dizzy heights of sous chef managed to turn themself into a worlwide brand worth so much but that's the world we live in (people are thick innit). he seems like an ideal friend for one david beckham.

By blaming the closure of 6 of his canteens on Brexit he's alienating 17.5 million food eaters who will now go elsewhere to trough, which will mean he'll probably be shutting another 6 of his canteens a year from now of which he can rightly so blame on Brexit

He's probably pissed off a % of the population who voted FOR brexit with this . I'm certainly even less likely to want to go to one again, or if my arm is twisted ... get a bottle of water and grab a greggs on the way :)

We joined up to his free gold card thing to get a free bottle of prosecco on your birthday if you spend more than £30 on food . Was OK but wouldn't contemplate it without the free booze..

I have to admit I'm pleased to see his restaurants failing, if and independent restaurant charged those prices then they wouldn't last 6 months. Just because it's Jamie Oliver some people will go and be happy to pay those prices and convince themselves that the food is good, just because it's Jamie freekin' Oliver. It's not like it's actually him in the kitchen cooking it!
I've never been to any of his restaurants and would never pay to do so, there is one in my town and all those I know that have been have been disappointed with small portions, overpriced, bland food
the standard costing for restaurants is 3 times the cost of the ingredients plus VAT, if his chain are doing 5 times cost then that says it all, total rip-off
and the Brexit reasoning is rubbish, the Euro was stronger than it is now 4/5 years ago

His place in Leeds is as many describe above bm, overpriced ordinary food, made to sound less ordinary on the menu. My guess is he's never visited em all apart from opening nights.

breedingmad I'm not a fan of businesses going bust but what we need is properly run businesses and fairly priced offerings for the public, and not someone cashing in on their name. His loss is someone else's gain, and I'm sure they are much more deserving

The fans will rush in at the start for sure, but you can't kid people into paying a cheffy premium for ever. Plenty of better-also worse- vfm in Leeds.

Three really good Italian restuarants in Aberdeen. By all accounts Olivers was not up to standard according to people I have spoken to.
Overpriced and overrated by general consensus.
Sad really when Aberdeen being the oil capital of Europe can't produce a decent restuarant. Mind you we don't even have a Waitrose..

Jamie trying to blame Brexit, rubbish ! Been to 2 of his restaurants, Bristol & Exeter (Exeter is one of the 6 he is closing, not been open very long !) Food was nice but not great, small portions and very expensive, after going to the Bristol one we thought we might try the new one in Exeter which might be better, it was worse ! Loud atmosphere, slow service, several things on the menu not available, all in all not a good experience, and if I was paying that sort of money again several other places I'd rather go to. And he blames Brexit....!!!!
