a payment of £490 has been paid to me by by a name I don't recognise, I wasn't expecting any payment either, it was made today by Faster Payments Incoming method?
Does this happen often as a mistake has been made and how does it happen?
It's a clear mistake as I don't recognise the name at all, so I phoned my bank to explain this to them as I don't want to spend money that is not mine especially if you have to eventually pay it back, the guy on the phone said he couldn't get any other detail on the person who paid, so I will just have to leave it there for a while. Looks like someone out there has a very similar account number to mine.

Same thing happened to me about 25 years ago but it was for a much larger sum, circa £100k as I recall.
Contacted my bank.I think that a clerk had miss-keyed the depositors account number.

happened to a chap I knew so don't worry about it. His wife got a job as an escort for a bit of extra bread and the agency paid the money into his account by mistake. They will rectify it when she's done a week in hand.

If you find cash and/or a mobile phone and hand them in to your local Police Station, then after 3 months they won't return those items to you. Anything else you can keep after the obligatory 3 months wait for the original owner to claim his or her property.

Unfortunately, life is not like Monopoly and, if you received a bank error in your favour and spend it, you are far more likely to go directly to jail than collect £200.
Keeping any money wrongly credited to your account could lead to you being charged with 'Retaining wrongful credit'.
Do not be tempted to spend your windfall even if no-one contacts you immediately. Banks regularly carry out audits which means that 'the man' will always catch up with you sooner rather than later.

How can someone make a wrong payment, as far as I know with the faster payment method, they need only your name and your account number to make a payment, so someone has your full name and identical 8 digit account number bar one difference here or there?
Seems bizarre.
