One in every eight workers in the UK - 3.8 million people - is now living in poverty. A total of 7.4 million people, including 2.6 million children, are in poverty despite being in a working family. This means that a record high of 55 per cent of people in poverty are in working households.

JRF’s definition of poverty is:

‘When a person’s resources (mainly their material resources) are not sufficient to meet their minimum needs (including social participation).’

It is shocking.

One of the causes is immigration.
The downward pressure on wages is caused by immigration.
The sponsoring of Muslim enclaves is costly and wrong.
The permitting of the Roma in creating their own homeland in Britain another huge drain on your exchequer.

The encouraging of health tourism another huge cost.

Stop letting wealthy people feel good about themselves and start looking after your own needy.

What I'm unclear about is whether those in this bracket then receive state help. I'm sure they do, so how can they still be in poverty?

We've only got austerity because of the things that WMFB has pointed out,the immigrants are bleeding us to death.

We've only got austerity because the Tories imposed it on us. It was not a necessity, it was purely a political decision.
Working class

The best off 10% take 28% of all income - and half of that is taken by the best off 1%."

The Conservatives legacy is 4 million children in the UK living in poverty whilst our national debt profile gets progressively worse.
The media have colluded with the Government to portray a false narrative, where they would have the People blame immigrants instead of the government for the problems caused by intentionally underfunding and running down services pending privatisation.

All this happened whilst the Tories were splitting us into 'strivers' and 'scroungers' - and the Tories in government kept their wealth offshore to avoid tax.

Austerity is the biggest con trick  inflicted by the most divisive government since Thatcher.

What is shocking is that someone can come up with an arbitrary silly definition of "poverty" as a % of a median income, and lefties don't see what's wrong with that and get on their high horses and mouth off. It's a nonsense. It, almost by definition, will create a section of people in "poverty" regardless of what their actual quality of life is. If everyone was well off, you could have two cars and 4 holidays a year and eat champers and cavear and still be in poverty if other people in the sample were better off than you. Also, 60% of 25k across the UK? In london that would be a very different prospect than in a place in the North where the cost of living (rent, a pint etc) was hugely lower.

It's a rubbish measurement. And as for the lefttards going on about the supposed austerity, in what way would reducing "austerity" increase the income of someone who already actually has a job? Riddle us that? Would keeping a library open help?

IMMIGRATION IS GOOD FOR THE COUNTRY?

1 in 8 of the working population of the UK is allegedly in poverty.

The HMRC defines poverty as children living in households receiving ‘out of work benefits’, as well as those receiving Tax Credits, whose income is still below 60% of the Before Housing Costs (BHC)

How many of those 1 in 8 are in London, where housing costs are higher than anywhere in the UK?
Report kenny mann December 10, 2016 2:28 PM GMT
The cheapest housing anywhere in London is in the east end in the Criminal Republic Of Newham.

The population of the C.R.O.N. is 320,000, but only 16% of those (51,200) are white indigenous.

The unemployment figures for the C.R.O.N. are higher than any other London borough.

Those that do work full time are mostly minimum wage earners.

Minimum wage in the cheapest borough, the C.R.O.N. - won’t even pay the rent on a Victorian 3 bed-roomed house, never mind feed a family.

Figures from 2012 indicate that:

4.9% are on income support - The figure for the rest of London is 4.4%

35.6% are on council tax benefit - The figure for the rest of London is 25.3%

40.1% are on housing benefit - The figure for the rest of London is 27.2%

NUMBER OF OFFENCES - LONDON 2012 to 2013 - 787,121

NUMBER OF OFFENCES - NEWHAM 2011 to 2012 - 31,829

NUMBER OF OFFENCES - NEWHAM 2012 to 2013 - 32,809

=======================================

Based on the Index of Multiple Depravation, Newham is the 3rd poorest borough in the country.

In April 2012 - 51% in Newham lived in working households receiving Tax Credits. This was the highest percentage in all of London. The London average is 31%.

=======================================

So, we have lots of lovely benefit claimants in the 3rd poorest borough in the country.

Due to the way housing benefits payments have changed, instead of the rent going directly to the landlords, it now goes to the tenant, and naturally, as they are ‘in poverty’,  it gets spent on food, so there are loads of evictions for those ‘in poverty’ who didn’t pay their rent.

With so many ‘in poverty’ it makes you wonder where the money comes from that keeps open the 80 (yes, eighty) betting shops in the borough.

Not to worry if you do your JSA in the bookies, Newham has TWO food banks,

Wages do NOT need to go up.

The cost of rent NEEDS to come down.

And best not to name the female Newham Councillor who owns 19 (yes, 19) buy-to-let properties in the borough.

If the rest of the UK knew the cost of the annual Housing Benefit bill for the whole of London, the sh*t could well hit the fan.

Extract from a report on the link between smoking and the poor in our society.

' ........: 'It is not that these people become poor and then irresponsibly take up smoking to make themselves worse off. About half of people in all income groups take up smoking, but the better off give it up while those in low-income groups find it most difficult, or almost impossible, perhaps because of the stress of poverty but probably because they live in a society where smoking remains normal.'

The study shows that a marginal improvement in quality of life, such as being an owner-occupier, rapidly leads to people being no more likely to smoke than anyone else. 'This evidence suggests that it does not take very much in the way of social and economic improvement to inoculate the majority of men and women against smoking.

'It is when one disadvantage combines with another and then another that low-income families smoke in so much greater numbers. Put most simply, disadvantage doubles smoking.'.......'
