One in every eight workers in the UK - 3.8 million people - is now living in poverty. A total of 7.4 million people, including 2.6 million children, are in poverty despite being in a working family. This means that a record high of 55 per cent of people in poverty are in working households.

Keep moving the bar as to how you define poverty and you can get whatever figures you want.

I don't trust any stats without first having an understanding of who they are from and what their motivation is.

JRF’s definition of poverty is:

‘When a person’s resources (mainly their material resources) are not sufficient to meet their minimum needs (including social participation).’

I think Mike Ashley sums it up by buying a jet for £40 million to "facilitate efficiencies"

It is shocking.

One of the causes is immigration.
The downward pressure on wages is caused by immigration.
The sponsoring of Muslim enclaves is costly and wrong.
The permitting of the Roma in creating their own homeland in Britain another huge drain on your exchequer.

The encouraging of health tourism another huge cost.

Stop letting wealthy people feel good about themselves and start looking after your own needy.

We've only got austerity because of the things that WMFB has pointed out,the immigrants are bleeding us to death.

What a disgusting outfit that Roma lot are. What benefit are they to this country?

Why is your knee-jerk reaction to call people names instead of actually discussing the points made?

Go ahead and rip those "sheeple's" arguments to shreds instead of coming out with the standard name calling.

The definition of poverty used is those living off 60% of median household income. Median income being about £25k per household.

What I'm unclear about is whether those in this bracket then receive state help. I'm sure they do, so how can they still be in poverty?
By:
Dotchinite
When: 08 Dec 16 12:37
When you understand the definition of poverty this sort of thing doesnt actually mean much.
By:
Dotchinite
When: 08 Dec 16 12:49
Its because the defintion of poverty doesnt equate to being in poverty.

If the rich get richer then more people fall into "poverty" without their situation changing.

Its a joke definition which is totally meaningless.

i can't stand Mike Ashley  - but his 40m jet and whatever else he earns hasn't come at the expense of the poor in the UK  - the UK poor benefit from this man   (the difference is money other rich individuals would have raked ) - those other rich lose out  /and... workers in the far east are  working even harder to survive.

We've only got austerity because of the things that WMFB has pointed out,the immigrants are bleeding us to death.

We've only got austerity because the Tories imposed it on us. It was not a necessity, it was purely a political decision.
Working class

The best off 10% take 28% of all income - and half of that is taken by the best off 1%."

The Conservatives legacy is 4 million children in the UK living in poverty whilst our national debt profile gets progressively worse.
The media have colluded with the Government to portray a false narrative, where they would have the People blame immigrants instead of the government for the problems caused by intentionally underfunding and running down services pending privatisation.

All this happened whilst the Tories were splitting us into 'strivers' and 'scroungers' - and the Tories in government kept their wealth offshore to avoid tax.

Austerity is the biggest con trick  inflicted by the most divisive government since Thatcher.

I caught a bit of newsnight last night where their was a scottish van driver earning £250 per week so he would to be struggling on such a poor wage, but isnt that below the minimum wage or did i hear it wrong ?
