Brian, Carl and Dennis Wilson, Mike Love, Al Jardine. Subsequently Blondie Chaplin, Ricky Fataar etc.

Brian wrote most of their music and they didn't play much on their records. Mike Love got himself credited for minor contributions.

Queen are a good example though because each of them wrote songs that were big or quite big hits. Mercury obv needs no introduction, but Roger Taylor wrote Radio Ga Ga that got to number two in the UK, John Deacon both I Want to Break Free and Another One Bites the Dust in the top 10 and Brian May's Save Me got to number eleven and We Will Rock You number two (although that was I think a double 'A' side with We Are The Champions.

I'm sure plenty of proper bands have all of the members involved in writing, but often not all on the same song.
You get some strange ones like the drummer writes pretty much all the lyrics for Rush.
And who could forget Ringo Starr?

REM are sort of a contender where any of Berry, Buck and Mills would write the music and give it to Stipe who did all the lyrics.

The Police are another. Sting wrote the majority though both Andy Summers and Stewart Copeland pitched in with tracks on each of their albums.

Also, Soundgarden. Chris Cornell did most but Ben Shepherd, Kim Thayil and Matt Cameron all wrote music and lyrics on their albums.

Oh, and seeing some of their tracks listed above reminds how utterly, utterly terrible Queen were.

pineapple misses the point
it is all four members of the group who are able to write songs.
To write s song, individually, you have to be capable of writing both music and lyrics.

Not sure where I've missed the point; said REM sort of qualify but Stipe wrote all the lyrics. As for The Police and Soundgarden, in both cases other band members brought both music and lyrics.

I think what you meant to put is that they are not to your taste, their sales and awards contradict the label terrible.

No, they were shocking. Not terrible during the 70s as a camp rock'n'roll band but during the 80s, geez. We will rock you, Radio gaga etc etc. Just appalling.

biggest selling UK album of all time, 18 no.1 albums and estimated sales of 300 million says otherwise. Let it rest as you are just confirming what many people already think.

Why does it always have to get personal?

I just think they're rubbish. I also think the "everyone's entitled to an opinion and maybe they're not my cup of tea" line doesn't wash. Some things, including music, can be genuinely great, good or bad. From about 82 onwards (which is when I got to know them and they were everywhere) then they were terrible. Radio Gaga, I Want to Break Free, One Vision, A Kind of Magic, Friends Will Be Friends, Who Wants to Live Forever, I Want It All. Stinkers. Every Single One. I don't mind them when they were more of a rock band in the 70s (though We Are the Champions/We Will Rock You is an abomination) but nothing particularly special. Will grant you Mercury was a good front man and turned them into a good live band by all accounts.

As for the idea that they must be good because they sold loads then that's patently a load of old b0ll0cks.

I can understand not liking Queen but saying they are rubbish is just silly.

I saw them at Earls Court 1977 cost £2.....and well worth it.

Gotta say...Queen very overrated. Just my opinion. Got some great CHOONS for sure. But miles away from greatest band ever.

Apparently, it's said that Prince Andrew had a part in doing Young Girl.

But Gary Puckett gets the credits for singing and Jerry Fuller for writing.

I've heard that Prince Philip had his moments ... not sure what songs though.

wildman - what does Mercury's sexuality have to do with the price of beans?

My favourite band's probably REM, the singer of who - I'm reliably informed - has a similar preference for men over women.

Difference is, they wrote a ton of great songs whereas Queen didn't.

Well you sell in numbers like that you have to take note.

Queen
Beatles
Abba
Adele
Oasis

Top 5 selling albums in the UK some may not be to your taste but I would call any of them 'rubbish'.

Queen did have some dirgy songs but what about the likes of Innuendo? Masterpiece.

Ian Dury and the Blockheads. Chaz Jankel was the main one to collaborate with ID, but the other guys all chipped after Chaz left the band.

I remember quite liking Innuendo at the time. Got a big scope and all that. Remember since though(and I've just listened to it again) that it's well, ok. I still like the change of gear half way through though.

As I've said, I'm basing my opinion on their singles output of the early 80s which - to me - is amongst the biggest example of a band forfeiting any artistic integrity in place of trying to write a "hit". Don't think they were good enough either side of that to compensate for that shocking run and be considered great. They had a good front man, caught on very quickly that the music video would become important, and put on extravagant shows.

There's plenty of bands who consistently write great songs, but don't sell for myriad reasons; mostly due to poor business decisions and not getting the backing of labels and radio stations. Likewise, there's plenty of bands who know how to play the game or just catch the wave at the right time and achieve success that is frankly above their level of talent.

Not a fan but I believe Rush fit. Usual script was Lee and Lifeson would do the music and Peart would do the lyrics, but there were quite a few where they'd each compose the whole shebang individually.

Dinosaur Jr. would qualify, but there's only three of them.
But the added bonus is J Masics looks like God and sings like an angel.

Don't care what they think and I'm not out to upset them. Doesn't change my opinion of them though.
