TEN YEARS they have been talking about this and trying to push it through..........10 YEARS.
Even if Heathrow gets the go ahead today, it'll be another year before they can try and get it through parliament and even then there will be lengthy legal challenges from local councils and whatnot.
Other countries must laugh at Britain, nobody spends more time, effort and money trying to get something done. Embarrassing.
Because nimbys have votes, they hold the government & the whole country to ransom.
Apparently while the UK has been dithering about building a single runway, China has built over 60 new airports.

brexit to a tee
That was a majority vote, we govern ourselves by majority decisions There was only one referendum...the result has been accepted
So where on earth is the comparison???????????????????????????

xmoneyx - we had to build the new Hong Kong airport very quickly before the Chinese took over. The Chinese government were up in arms about us building that airport as they were hoping to get hold of the money after their take over of the province. The British government were absolutely determined that the Chinese authorities were in no way going to get hold of the billions of pounds held by the Hong Kong government, so they made a quick decision to spend as much of it as possible by constructing a man made island off shore and building a state of the art modern international airport.
Needless to say, nearly all the contractors involved in the project were of UK origin.
Well done UK government I say!

Pity they could not do the same for our own country
May is making her own decisions not Cameron's...personally I wanted Gatwick to get it But a decision had to be made. By delaying it, the costs soar.
There should one enquiry, all objections are made there, then after consideration a decision is made, compensation being paid where applicable. Then build it!

got to say to me this is bizarre. the country is tiny. trying to compact everything into London seems bizarre. why not someplace just outside london. half an hour travelling distance by bus or train. set up free travel tickets for plane ticket holders.

probably because a large slice of goods coming in will end up in london and the surrounding areas.
if you built a new site...well that involves more planning and $$$$$$

The government does what it wants and are never held to task when in power typical Tory push through will be the same with Brexit the little people have no voice big money talks.

I was wondering why they couldn't utilise Northolt which is just 6 miles north of Heathrow with the A40 running alongside the existing RAF base. The RAF could move elsewhere and turn what is already an established airport into an another commercial London airport. They would need to extend the 5500ft runway, but the surrounding area is less built up than around Heathrow. They may even be able to have another parallel runway similar to Heathrow.
Heathrow's runways are 12250ft (2.5 miles) long!

I don't want to be crass or indelicate, but the financial might of London props the rest of the country up. So we'll have our third runway anywhere we like thank you very much.
