As above.

My router shows orange when this happens and it comes back in a few minutes but as I am playing poker it is seriously annoying and causes me to go on tilt Sad I lost a big hand again tonight because of it.  I don't play for much but even so it is annoying.  Can anyone help?

I have gone on the internet but it is mainly about wireless issues on there.

Has anyone tried powerline ethernet adaptors? You plug your router via ethernet into a plug, the have other plugs in the house and share the ethernet via the mains. The point of ethernet over wireless is better security and higher speed.

I have tried what you said and I hope it does not happen again.  If it does I will have to contact BT, but they are the most appalling company to deal with and I know that intermittent faults are one of the hardest faults to correct.

Funnily enough I decided mainly on ethernet so it would be more stable!  It only has to drop out for minutes for you to lose an important hand at poker.  I also do not like the reports about wifi damaging your health.

Annie just cancel & get Sky Wifi

I'm in a block & when check connections most are on BT (all medium strength) & Talk Talk (also BT rubbish)

I've 18 tabled for years on end & only ever remember 2 drop outs(though not playing as much now) also great for video etc.

I use all day every day & never a lost connection

I don't promote sky (tv is a rip off but they do sweet deals for new customers) but their Wifi is excellent , do agree it's not healthy  , personally think it's by design to move us into another level of consciousness , but that's a far too complex subject for chit chat Cool
Report annie. October 23, 2016 11:08 PM BST
Jayco, I think it is the home hub 4 as it is just the ordinary broadband not the fast one.

Delta, one interesting thing is that when the engineer came I queried him about why I could not get 'public' bt easily here.  He said it was because that in new flats the insulation was much greater and they lined the walls so that wifi did not easily transmit.  Or words to that effect as I am a tech baby.

Moonbeam, I remember when I was living with a friend years ago and he had sky and I only remember the odd disconnection but that was just an area fault I think, not like now.  I also had virgin before that and used to play poker without this hassle. It did have the odd problem but again it was usually an area fault.

Funnily enough I wish it was an total disconnection rather than going off for a few minutes and then coming back on again.  It would cost me less money and save my sanity Sad

could e a few reasons.

poor wiring in your home.
bt upgrading their network along the line and having to turn something off locally.
interferance (could be linked to poor wiring)

doubt its a wifi problem if the light changed...usually means your pppoe or other method conenction has an issue.

Annie you dont need to contact BT, just go on their website and test your broadband/line, if you do need to contact BT use the livechat on the website.
Report Just Checking October 24, 2016 5:55 PM BST
Do you have anything else plugged in? Firstly unplug any phone extensions etc. Maybe even the phone. Any wires from your socket can add noise or interference, I know someone that had awful ADSL, they unplugged the wire running to a phone in another part of the house, and got instantly stable good ADSL. Even a crap splitter dongle can make things worse. Then restart the router so it re-connects seeing the new electrics. Does that improve things? Does your computer report a problem on the network icon in the system tray? If it's windows and it's the connection to the router it'll show a nasty error, if it's just the router down it may say something like "limited connectivity".

As others say you can run a line check either via the internet (enter your phone number) or a special phone number, the exchange will look at the connection to your phone and tell you about it.

Couple strange comments in this thread btw, ethernet is, if it's not a laptop or whatever, far better than wifi. It's not old fashioned, it's BETTER. Faster, more stable etc. They don't use wifi to connect the servers at betfair, that'll be for sure.

Annie does the weather affect it the connection? Like on a wet rainy day it's worse?

As I said earlier in my experience both mine and people I know, it's often other crud attached to the phone line causing noise and quality issues. There is a BT little adapter box you can put on older phone line boxes to help :NTE5 that I think helped me and someone else I know.

BTW if your internet goes down, can you reconnect to the poker server and continue or is that it once you are seen to lose connection?

If that is the case there are solutions really. If your computer supports wifi (if not get a USB wifi dongle for a few quid!) then keep phone to hand and know how to quickly enable it as a hotspot, then wifi onto it. Might take a couple minutes but you can pretty quickly get back on the net. Or maybe even if a lot of money in play just enable the phone as a hotspot and dont connect until needed.

If it's worth it and reconnect is allowed, then you can get routers that can do 3g backup but maybe that's not worth it.
Report Just Checking October 30, 2016 12:38 AM BST
BTW if not familiar with term, hotspot means (and this is good if youv'e a data allowance on phone) you flip your phone into acting as a wifi router. Then you can connect your computer/laptop etc through your phone via wifi onto the net. I've done it a few times when needed, but depends on data costs. IT's slower but gets the job done.

I wonder (never tried this) if you were connected to both adsl AND phone at same time it might switch to the phone if failed?
I have a phone (duh!) and a USB wifi dongle but I use proper manly ethernet mostly so never tried.

The thing about the internet is it was designed from the start to allow bits failing, because the military wanted that, for obvious reasons. There are probably a thousand possible routes or more from us to like a server in america, bits may fail all the time and we wont' know as it's designed to just work around it.
Report Just Checking October 30, 2016 12:49 AM BST
Annie if you've a modern phone and a wifi enabled device, you'll find an option on phone somewhere probably to say act as hotspot. THen your phone will appear when you search for routers. Had a little look into this. I think you may be able to set it up like this if important money is in play:
Have ethernet as main normal link
Setup wifi to phone and store settings
Enable hotspot on phone
Make sure ethernet is the preffered usage like described here or similar, set ethernet as preferred option.
http://www.addictivetips.com/windows-tips/give-ethernet-higher-priority-over-wifi-connection-in-windows-10/

Bet away .. If it looks like router is dead .. then I'd guess Windows may still keep trying it but disconect the physical ethernet cable and it should AFAIK see this and switch to the phone. So you can get out of your position. Then reconnect ethernet and see if it's working. Getting out of your position being the important thing of course (I dont play poker any mroe but I understand the problem!).

If you pay for data I'd be careful in initial testing as to what is used but if not then work away.

All this of course relies on the poker allowing a reconnect, that's up to them if that's allowed!

Report annie. October 30, 2016 10:53 PM GMT
It is because I am a woman that convictions for 'date rape' make me uneasy.

I have read somewhere, I think, that 'stranger rape' is only 10% of the total for rape.  So of all rape cases 90% are for 'date rape' which is really one persons word against another.  Throw in that in lots of cases these allegations are days, weeks, months, years, decades after the event then you can see the problem.

I won't quote statistics but a large proportion of rape allegations are thrown out by the police as 'false allegations'  There are also numerous convictions for false allegations.  There is also the problem that the 'victim' can get substantial compensation for the 'rape'.

I think it is relevant that complainants often do not report the 'rape' for a long time after.  Maybe because they had sex with a man who did not call her back?

Re: broadband problems - I found the following thread which talks about the same problem:

https://community.bt.com/t5/BT-Infinity-Speed-Connection/Broadband-dropping-out-intermittently/td-p/1604251

It talks about the hub re-booting after trying and failing to update the firmware:

I had the very same problem and suffered it for months, the same as you many visits from an enginer and calls to bt all came to nothing, the problem persisted. No one could help!
I actually almost gave up and then i thought i would check the logs in the bt home hub settings and low and behold the home hub was rebooting itself after a set certain time everyday , i can't recall the exact time length it was, but it was like clockwork every x mins the home hub would reboot.
The logs gave the game away, the homehub was trying to update its firmware and the reboot was part of that process.
I never really found out why the firmware update always failed but changing to a Netgear hub stoped the bt software trying to install a  firmware update  and the reboot to finish the install  and the problem was solved.
So basically the problem is a firmware upgarde  sent down your line to your homebub  failing and consistantly rebooting your homehub.
Report Gin October 31, 2016 2:01 PM GMT
I guess you either need to ensure the latest firmware is on the hub or get a new hub!

It is still going on unfortunately and I went on the bt site AGAIN and did everything they asked of me but they still ended up telling me my connection was fine Cry  Then they assume I am on wireless and take me through that and tell me I have wireless problems when I have not enabled wireless, I don't think.  I am connected by a cable direct from the bt point into the router and then a cable direct from the router into my pc.  My hub is almost new as I was only connected about two months ago.

Next stop is to phone them up but from what I have read that hasn't solved other people's disconnection problems either.

Adding to this, I had problems myself this week!

Internet would connect ok then randomly drop out, was doing my head in. I could log into the router and see the noise fluctuate a lot.
I tried a new splitter etc, didn't help. Phone dial tone had no crackle, I was stumped.

Then I realised I'd moved my phone cable a few days earlier so it was running alongside some mains cables and over a wall wart power supply.

Moved it away from the power cables and wall wart again .. get in, it's been solid as you like since then.

I couldn't hear any interference on the line but I'm thinking something was putting noise into it, back along the cable and then out to the router and it wasn't liking it. So there's a suggesting for you annie, check your phone line isn't runnign along side anything that might interfere with it.
Report Just Checking November 19, 2016 7:15 PM GMT
Thinking about it further, the way the splitter works if the wall wart was putting high frequency rubbish into the line (quite possible), I wouldnt' hear it on the phone but the router certainly would get it.

It's very easy to change a hard drive, just google your PC model hard drive change and that will show you. Try to save what you need from old hard drive first though as you will be starting from scratch.

Second hand great big good quality LCD monitors are incredibly cheap now on ebay, I couldn't believe it when I looked the other day, loads of them.

Another way of stopping dropouts annie if they start again is perhaps to ask your ISP to increase your allowed signal to noise margin (I think you are ADSL?).
They are always trying to give people the best speeds they can but it can cut the margins a bit thin. They may be able to make your speeds a bit slower but give increased stability. If you aren't streaming films or doing big downloads you wouldn't even likely notice.

When it comes to blue screens is there any pattern? Like does it do it after it's been on for a while like it might be overheating?

Is it a laptop or full size computer? If it's a laptop, tried vaccuming any dust out of the fan outlet? Dust creates heat and overheat causes crashes.

Putting a new harddrive in  .. well that won't do anything without an operating system on it. Do they expect you to isntall windows?
Has it been pre set up in a very similar computer so you can slot it it? If not ...

I think it's a given that Windows will be pre-installed on the new hard drive.
