I wonder (never tried this) if you were connected to both adsl AND phone at same time it might switch to the phone if failed?
I have a phone (duh!) and a USB wifi dongle but I use proper manly ethernet mostly so never tried.

The thing about the internet is it was designed from the start to allow bits failing, because the military wanted that, for obvious reasons. There are probably a thousand possible routes or more from us to like a server in america, bits may fail all the time and we wont' know as it's designed to just work around it.

Annie if you've a modern phone and a wifi enabled device, you'll find an option on phone somewhere probably to say act as hotspot. THen your phone will appear when you search for routers. I was in an airport a few weeks ago and it was funny when I tried to log onto the airport wifi how many routers called things like "CragsPhone1" were around me Laugh

Had a little look into this. I think you may be able to set it up like this if important money is in play:
Have ethernet as main normal link
Setup wifi to phone and store settings
Enable hotspot on phone
Make sure ethernet is the preffered usage like described here or similar, set ethernet as preferred option.
http://www.addictivetips.com/windows-tips/give-ethernet-higher-priority-over-wifi-connection-in-windows-10/

Bet away .. If it looks like router is dead .. then I'd guess Windows may still keep trying it but disconect the physical ethernet cable and it should AFAIK see this and switch to the phone. So you can get out of your position. Then reconnect ethernet and see if it's working. Getting out of your position being the important thing of course (I dont play poker any mroe but I understand the problem!).

If you pay for data I'd be careful in initial testing as to what is used but if not then work away.

All this of course relies on the poker allowing a reconnect, that's up to them if that's allowed!

you could ditch the isp router.
flash a non isp router (ooo errr) with dd-wrt or tomato and have a spare dongle attached to the router via usb and enable settings to fall back on the dongle if the isp link goes down.

just dont flash yer dongle to the neighbours though.

Thanks again for all the replies.  I will need them as my connection has gone down again whilst playing poker Sad

I am multi tabling so I cannot reply much until later this evening but I really do appreciate your help.

The connection goes down just after or a few hours after I start playing poker, the rest of the night is okay.  I disconnect the broadband each night and only put it on a few minutes before I play, could this be it?

I have used the bt fault line but they can't find anything wrong with it, as it is working when I use it.  I suppose I will have to phone them but I am dreading it as they are really awful.  You wait ages and then get some numpty who does not understand you. I had a terrible time just getting the line put on and then they wanted to overcharge me.

Sorry annie, I read 'tabling' as  tableting Blush

As for BT, been with them for years and don't know why people complain, I find them very good at sorting out the occasional problem that I've had. last lady I spoke to was very nice and sorted me out a free new hub as mine was ancient, she was British as well.

I am not paranoid, crags, and chit chatters know how horrible you are.  You would not have said the same to anyone, you like being nasty to me.

I don't use chit chat as much as I would like because of you.  What with calling me 'Dave' and insinuating I am a man and abusing me.  With all the technical aids at their disposal a search of chit chat threads would confirm you are stalking and harassing me.  So don't deny it.

I'll say one thing.. it's  a strange woman who hopes that ALL men in prison for date rape will be helped by Ched Evans getting his conviction quashed.
By:
annie.
When: 30 Oct 16 23:53
It is because I am a woman that convictions for 'date rape' make me uneasy.

I have read somewhere, I think, that 'stranger rape' is only 10% of the total for rape.  So of all rape cases 90% are for 'date rape' which is really one persons word against another.  Throw in that in lots of cases these allegations are days, weeks, months, years, decades after the event then you can see the problem.

I won't quote statistics but a large proportion of rape allegations are thrown out by the police as 'false allegations'  There are also numerous convictions for false allegations.  There is also the problem that the 'victim' can get substantial compensation for the 'rape'.

I think it is relevant that complainants often do not report the 'rape' for a long time after.  Maybe because they had sex with a man who did not call her back?

Re: broadband problems - I found the following thread which talks about the same problem:

https://community.bt.com/t5/BT-Infinity-Speed-Connection/Broadband-dropping-out-intermittently/td-p/1604251

It talks about the hub re-booting after trying and failing to update the firmware:

I had the very same problem and suffered it for months, the same as you many visits from an enginer and calls to bt all came to nothing, the problem persisted. No one could help!
I actually almost gave up and then i thought i would check the logs in the bt home hub settings and low and behold the home hub was rebooting itself after a set certain time everyday , i can't recall the exact time length it was, but it was like clockwork every x mins the home hub would reboot.
The logs gave the game away, the homehub was trying to update its firmware and the reboot was part of that process.
I never really found out why the firmware update always failed but changing to a Netgear hub stoped the bt software trying to install a  firmware update  and the reboot to finish the install  and the problem was solved.
So basically the problem is a firmware upgarde  sent down your line to your homebub  failing and consistantly rebooting your homehub.

Gin
When: 31 Oct 16 15:01
I guess you either need to ensure the latest firmware is on the hub or get a new hub!

You spoke about only turning the router on just before you use it? Maybe it would help to try just leaving it on?

Thanks Gin, Just Checking and everyone else.

Unfortunately I don't understand about 'firmware' and other things mentioned.  I am a bit of a dinosaur Sad

However, these replies have forced me to learn new stuff, so good has come out of bad Happy

It is still going on unfortunately and I went on the bt site AGAIN and did everything they asked of me but they still ended up telling me my connection was fine Cry  Then they assume I am on wireless and take me through that and tell me I have wireless problems when I have not enabled wireless, I don't think.  I am connected by a cable direct from the bt point into the router and then a cable direct from the router into my pc.  My hub is almost new as I was only connected about two months ago.

Next stop is to phone them up but from what I have read that hasn't solved other people's disconnection problems either.

allowing remote firmware upgrading means your router isnt secured.

always best to know how to do this yerself.

do bt have somewhere on their site where you can upgrade manually?
ie.download the file and use an option via the hubs web interface to upgrade?

I had a similar problem about a year ago, seemed to come and go intermittantly.Got in touch with service provider and they checked the line which showed a fault with the cable. The engineer came out and the cable was damaged (squirrels were prime suspect).Been 100% since.

annie you don't say whether you have the standard BT internet or what they call the fibre optic one.

I had similar problems a few years ago and upgraded to their fibre optic service.
Contrary to their adverts it didn't make things any faster (because there's still some old copper wire in the travel) but it did sort out the connectivity problem.

Update in case it might help fellow chit chatters.

Fingers crossed I haven't had one episode of dropping out since my last post.  My computer has also been behaving and I have had no problems with it.

The problems got better after listening to advice but it still dropped out occasionally.  However I have moved the computer and all the connections because I aquired a proper computer work station.  Since then it has behaved perfectly.  Because of the problems I had before I acquired one of those programs that profess to sort out your computer for a fee.  I did not pay the fee but it did various scans and fixed some small problems, so that might have helped as well.  It is still telling me I have problems but it wants money to fix them.

Basically I don't know what fixed my problems, but hope they don't repeat themselves Happy

Adding to this, I had problems myself this week!

Internet would connect ok then randomly drop out, was doing my head in. I could log into the router and see the noise fluctuate a lot.
I tried a new splitter etc, didn't help. Phone dial tone had no crackle, I was stumped.

Then I realised I'd moved my phone cable a few days earlier so it was running alongside some mains cables and over a wall wart power supply.

Moved it away from the power cables and wall wart again .. get in, it's been solid as you like since then.

I couldn't hear any interference on the line but I'm thinking something was putting noise into it, back along the cable and then out to the router and it wasn't liking it. So there's a suggesting for you annie, check your phone line isn't runnign along side anything that might interfere with it.
By:

When: 19 Nov 16 19:15
Thinking about it further, the way the splitter works if the wall wart was putting high frequency rubbish into the line (quite possible), I wouldnt' hear it on the phone but the router certainly would get it.

Thanks, Just Checking.

I have not connected a phone yet to the line as I use my mobile.  It is cheaper than the rates of bt!

I have had no further problems with the internet, but fingers crossed.  Unfortunately now I have several problems with the computer Sad.  It works but then stops with various problems, unfortunately it always does this when I am playing poker.  It does not like me gambling Happy  The company I bought it from has sent me a new hard drive but I have never replaced one before and I am worried that I will lose all my poker notes.  Oh well I must look how to do it on the internet.  The company said they would help me with it.
