"Female chess players forced to wear hijab as governing body awards world championship to Iran".
.
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2016/09/29/female-chess-players-accuse-governing-body-of-sex-discrimination/

Can't wait to see the ideological contortions the usual suspects go to to explain how this is purely cultural and isn't an example of oppression.

Imagine having the intellectual capabilities of a Grandmaster and being forced to wrap your head in a black tea towel to play the game.

Of course it is oppression, and it would be interesting to know if any brown envelopes were involved in holding the championships in Iran. And by "if any" I mean "how many".

Otoh, if they were held here, we'd expect competitors to abide by our laws.

What does the queen do in chess?

The queen (♕,♛) is the most powerful piece in the game of chess, able to move any number of squares vertically, horizontally, or diagonally

Surely they'll have to change the rules to, absurd having a woman with all that power

James O’Brien commented on this early in his slot on LBC this morning.
He asked what's the difference between world leaders wearing headgear at a state funeral, and these female chess players wearing a hijab at a chess tournament in Iraq?

I hope someone phoned in to inform him that the world leaders attending a funeral wore the headgear out of respect. They weren't going to be arrested and flogged for not wearing it.

While the wearing of the hijab is compulsory in Iraq and non compliance might well result in the offending female being arrested and sentenced to be thrashed.

You'd have thought a BBC Newsnight presenter would have known that wouldn't you?

It is Iran..actually

If this is the standard rule in their country that women wear this....what can one say

There are so many withdrawals I am not sure event will go ahead

I looked at the link, one women thought it was ok.

I would have thought a compromise could have been reached about this...but we don't live in those times.

I admit it does seem excessive to me. I think players need to see their opponents face.

the fkrs don't want anything negative which compromises their pro muslim agenda

you have to remember who is in charge of their religious dept

when you have them in all your editorial sections no one is going to raise anything anti muslim or they are out of a job

think of it

would you be brave enough to register a complaint or make contrary statements in meetings

Iran threw out their president and Americans in 1979.....

They chose a very strict Muslim society.....this was their choice.

When in Muslim countries we must abide by their rules...it is called respect

Muslims in our societies must abide by OUR rules that is also respect

If we could all remember that it would be so much better.

Since female chess players are expected to abide by their societies rules...perhaps this was not a good choice for the World championship

if it causes non Muslim female chess players that much of a problem.

I have said earlier I think that seeing your opponents face is perhaps part of Chess.

My suggestion hold this tournament somewhere else.

My advice is to the women is to keep away from the country.

Although they have held chess tournaments there before, some in the women in that link said they were offered

a very nice choice of hijabs

I agree with Dr.

The women should stick together & say b0llox to your tournament , if you want
to hold them in barbaric countries & force us to wear medieval hear wear we will
not be taking part.

Chess forbidden in Islam, rules Saudi mufti, but issue not black and white

After the 1979 Islamic revolution, playing chess was banned in public in Iran and declared haram, or forbidden

ebul gerry; When in Muslim countries we must abide by their rules...it is called respect

what a wanchor you are gerald. their 'rules' kill unmarried mothers, gays, and apostates. no woman can walk around in anything but 'islamic' dress(shroud) or they will be nicked if they are lucky, or have acid thrown in their face if not. a woman cannot say; 'i am not a muslim, and do not want to wear a veil. she will die. islam does not do pluralism, in iran or anywhere else. birth control is not permitted, newspapers are banned, as is non-religious tv. the internet is blocked. books are dangerous to the owner. iran has executed 600 people so far this year. no appeals, no press coverage, no clemency, just secret murder for such 'crimes' as 'insulting the islamic state' or trying to set up a secular political party.

when in the west they must abide by our rules eh? that must be why islamic women in the uk walk round in hotpants. truth is they behave in the same way as in the khazi they sprung from. they do not adapt to our rules at all, and they do not have to as we bend over for them by allowing halal and men to have more than one wife, which we call bigamy, and results in imprisonment for a native of the uk.

Denmark have just approved it to let married muslim migrants have their 14
year old wife's live with them.

Germany are considering this also, but as above likely to approve it.

so if 14's ok, whats not to be allowed? 12? 10? absolutely ridiculous

They live in a different society to ours, who is to say who is right or who is wrong?

As far as our society they must live by our rules, if we allow them to carry on living by our rules we are complete idiots,
unless we are ok with it

I am surprised Iran have banned playing chess in publicShocked

One thing you may not realise is how much our society has changed, I notice it because I have never left the 1960 or 1970's in my headSad

Compared to then, we are an amazingly effeminate society now. I find that a little unpleasant.

Unfortunately I am too old and not rich enough to move...probably be to Eastern Europe if I could, as long as I can get my bets on here.

Just bend over and brace. We are slowly inch by inch giving in to them.  You will have no choice eventually. You have no idea how far they have 'integrated' into our system.  My advice to the young is to convert.
