I'm thinking The Prisoner, Columbo, Reilly Ace of Spies, The Wire, Breaking Bad, The Sopranos and Granada's Sherlock Holmes, I Claudius...just sticking to English language programmes...but --

Having watched only 5 random episodes, I'm starting to think that THE FUGITIVE is the greatest tv drama ever, with 120 episodes made, each of variable quality. But for breadth of themes, great actors and actual influence, can this be bettered? Don't think so. For the last episode, 72% of Americans with tv sets tuned in. This is the daddy of 'em all.

Just finished Happy Valley and it was excellent - my vote would go to Romanzo Criminale - an Italian gangster series set in the 70s - brilliant stuff

Edge of Darkness a very good call, I watched the series again recently. Seeing it again I wondered why I hadn't seen Bob Peck in anything recently, a quick check of IMBD and I see why, been dead more than 15 years, a great shame. I also saw the US 2010 film version with Mel Gibson which wasn't bad at all.

I think my favourite TV dramas have to be those by Stephen Poliakoff... The Lost Prince... Shooting the Past... Capturing Mary.

the greatest is a tough one but I enjoyed Edward VII with Timothy West which I'm not sure ever got repeated. Also Holocaust with Meryl Streep and The Winds Of War & War And Remembrance with Robert Mitchum.

1st series of The Killing (Danish version). Not for people who like gimmicks or "action".  But for a realistic, thought provoking study of the devastating effects of a murder on the victim's family and others in the comunity (including the Police and Political administration) It was superbly done.

For British drama Happy Valley, as mentioned a few times above, is right up there - series one anyway. Two was on, but first series was spectacular edge of the seat stuff with a great storyline and amazing acting. I don't know anyone who saw it who didn't think it was one of the best things they had seen.

Olly's Prison (1993)- hard to access, don't know why BBC don't remaster it, maybe some copywright wrangle.

Nice one, that was superb.

Not seen some mentioned on here, like Breaking Bad, but Our Friends in the North would take some beating.

Others worthy of a mention:

Bouquet Of Barbed Wire
When The Boat Comes In
Secret Army
Within These Walls
Tenko
Danger UXB
Dr Finlay's Casebook
All Creatures Great And Small

They knew how to produce a good show in those days but television became like a tired old man in the late 80s. The early 90s was the end for me and I watch nothing these days except racing and headlines.

Currently it must be Chicago Fire.

From the past Upstairs Downstairs, Downton Abbey, Spooks ,Morse, Judge John Deed, Silent Witness, Heartbeat and a great drama from the BBC shame they only made one series. it was called Good Cop.
