I read a few places LIDL's temporary special offers can have surprisingly good wine for very cheap, something to maybe keep an eye out for. Even their normal stuff is apparently very good value. http://www.thisismoney.co.uk/money/news/article-3093017/Lidl-retains-crown-best-value-wine-M-S-branded-poorest-latest-league-table-experts.html |

do you have waitrose in ur area? |
|
By:
Unfortunately not Delta. Is there a nice one in there?
Thanks for links above peeps. Anyone actually tried the wines themselves to recommend? There's that many but the reservas seem the best so far |
|
By:
do you have waitrose in ur area?
i was just going to ask the same as waitrose have some own brands red @ £4-99. well worth a try imo. |
|
By:
I always forget which ones were good tbh
|
|
By:
We all do, often the wine tastes good because of the occasion, the company, the cheese and enjoyment. I have bought the same wine from those scenarios and it isnt ever as good.
We are probably chasing the holy grail imo, but it is fun trying. |

I was meaning through out and out overindulgence rather than the more sophisticated things you mentioned

James' -
shame no waitrose, just that they have a 300 page guide of all the wines they sell in store- with description etc - would have been a good start ... ask Now We Know on HR forum on his Johnny Skull thread - he's an wine 'expert' |
|
By:
lol john, i have been buying 1 red a week to find my fav, they all taste different without company(and cheese)
i still could not recommend a red for toffee. |
|
By:
Only ever paid between £5 and £14 but that £10 one (extra special El Meson gran reserva) out asdas has been by miles the best, even better than the £14 one.
Always wondered how good a wine can actually taste and if it's worth paying that little extra within reason for a special occasion. No doubt there's a decent one for around a fiver too, it's just finding the blighter! |

Cheers delta, will give him a shout

medium to full GOC, superb value at £8 a bottle if you buy a case. Don't be put off by it being their own brand they know their suppliers.

James, there's loads so here goes with my picks. First one at Lidl Carles Priorat £5.99, it's a proper food wine but at the price it's excellent value. Believe it or not you just can't go wrong with the Aldi Toro Loco at £3.49 but many of their reds are very good value too - just try their exquisite collection Pinot Noir. Then for me probably the best value wise is at M&S when they have the "buy 6 bottles & get 25% off". There are are some really decent wines eg the CM Carmenere which was selling at £8 a bottle, it's on offer at £6 a bottle AND there's an additional 25% off when you buy 6 bottles so you're getting it at £4.50 a bottle (you can go for a mix, you don't have to buy 6 of one wine to get the 25% off). However, I wouldn't buy "on spec" as I think there are some poor value wines at M&S too.
Also why not go talk to your local wine shop? The one I use has put me on to lots of really good wines, the standout one price-wise being a Vina Rufina Joven Roble Tempranillo at £7.49 - it's superb!. But the most important thing is - enjoy! |
|
By:
I shall try the Lidls Carles Priorat tonight!
As a rule of thumb I wouldn't buy a case until I'd sampled at least one bottle first bb/lee. Too expensive if you're not fond of it!! |

And thanks!

Argentinian Malbec in Asda, £4.99 very palatable
|
|
By:
If I'm celebrating a win or looking to impress then I'll get a nice Amarone della Valpolicella. Smooth as silk. If I'm just looking for a cheap glass or two then I'll generally hunt down a primitivo. That £5 Argentinian malbec won some prestigious award recently I think and it is nice, especially for the price.

Thought the acknowledged Chit Chat fav red wine was Tesco Chilean Red at about £3.75?
|
|
By:
You can get a £8 experience from a £4 red wine just by preparing properly. Air the wine, bring it to the right temperature, serve with red meat, that sort of thing.
At the moment I like the Claret from FRA that Aldi are selling. Avoid wines from multiple grape types. |
|
By:
I can get an £8 experience from £4 wine by drinking two bottles of the stuff.

Try a white burgundy. Don't laugh and, no, I don't mean Chablis, though that would count. Look for Grand Cru on the label.
|
|
By:
At the moment Tesco, Sainsbury's and Marks and Spencers are doing a buy 6 get 25% discount. But check before you go as they might have finished the promotion. Also I think with Marks you did have to buy MULTIPLES of six to get the discount on all of them, they might have changed it now. Otherwise any bottles over six but under twelve etc do not get the discount. But check.
All of them are also doing discounts on popular wine so you get 'double bubble'. Waitrose is doing a 25% off promotion when you buy just 3 bottles. Again check it does not say multiples of three. |

I put 30per month away with a company called Naked Wines who source their wines from small independent vineyards. Well worth a look
|
|
By:
Yes Dragon i do the same, not the cheapest but only limited amounts
of each bottle |
|
By:
yes wh but nice to encourage independent small vineyards. I tend to buy cases when my account is built up. don't miss 30 per month and its nice to get different cases now and then
|
|
By:
Yeah do the same then once every 3/4 months mix up a case
of different reds |

Chateau David from Sainsburys is good, about £6.50.

If i don't like the first glass from a bottle, i turn the rest into a sangria.
This happens more often than not. |

Aldi are having a wine festival this week, it started yesterday.
Tried 2 bottles (shared) and have to say both were superb, best value had so far. 1st bottle Amigo secreto chile £6.99. Unbelievably good for the price. Will be buying a case next time 2nd bottle. Argentinian Malbec, exquisite range £5.99. Again very nice, would def buy again. The difference between your typical asda or majestic wines £5-£10 bottle and an Aldis one is night and day. Aldis are amazing. Going to grab a few different bottles from their festival range next time as for some reason you can only get them online once their festival is over. If you've got an Aldis local, try that Amigo Secreto!! |
|
By:
Will try that Amigo Secreto, it's organic & one of the new range (says best with pork dishes)

McGuigans Estate Shiraz at £5 is very good value imo.
As with all red wines, open the bottle for 15 - 20 minutes before drinking |
|
By:
Facts - given the surface area of the wine exposed to the air, this does virtually nothing. Simply pour it into a jug for your prescribed period. Won't be a problem with the wine you propose but some aged Shiraz/Syrahs will throw a sediment so be careful.
Havn't commented on this fred so far but that one couldnt go unchallenged, as should the guy who discounted wines made from more than one grape variety ![]() |
|
By:
Rosemount Estate shiraz or cab/shz is a very nice wine. Usually about £7.50 but can be got for £5 in ASDA at the moment. Well worth a sip.
