Thanks Brassneck, just read it. As you said he had to measure his words especially as it was an open letter to a young girl.
I stand by my earlier comment that he is not entitled to speak for other scientists only for himself. Interesting that he still expressed his view that his belief was quite different from the religiosity of someone more naive.

We are all prisoners of religion Vel, even those like me who do not believe. In Einstein's day the pressure to conform was much greater than it is today at least in the UK. This may only be transient unfortunately.

Maxwell was a great scientist Zorro but then so were some others. I would name Paul Dirac as not necessarily greater but on an equal footing. As Newton said we are all standing on the shoulders of giants. Each generation has better tools to work with.

"Prisoners of religion" kind of smacks of Gnosticism and cages, etc.

As opposed to this : "Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free."

casuistry
the use of clever but unsound reasoning, especially in relation to moral questions; sophistry.

interesting Velasquez

The statement God can do Everything...would mean he could never create something he could not do..it would contradict that.

But if he can never create something he cannot do....that is one thing he can't do, so he can never do everything?

It implies that Adam is inferior. You can do better. You are a superior sort.

"...but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat from it you will certainly die."

That is,  "the tree of the knowledge of good and evil..." In the New Testament, Jesus is THE TREE OF LIFE, and he died nailed to a piece of wood, a tree. The NT concludes that the final state, determined by the Tree of Life, is far superior to anything that existed in the original "paradise" before the Fall. In other words, THAT was the plan all along, existing before the universe was ever made.

Now, as an arty guy Grin, I'm sure you will appreciate that the Salvador Dali painting in the Kelvingrove kinda hints at this "cosmic" dimension...

When they ate from that tree in Genesis, did they die immediately? No - they continued to live, yet they died SPIRITUALLY because they had no relationship with God. Man has a body, a soul and a spirit, but their spirits were "caged" so to speak Plain, by their souls, their souls being their knowledge of good AND evil, and their inclinations determined by their every whim, like and dislike, their personalities apart from God.

I think Einstein did more than that Zorro. Science progresses by scientists standing on each others shoulders

James Clerk Maxwell FRS FRSE (13 June 1831 – 5 November 1879) was a Scottish[2][3] scientist in the field of mathematical physics.[4] His most notable achievement was to formulate the classical theory of electromagnetic radiation, bringing together for the first time electricity, magnetism, and light as manifestations of the same phenomenon. Maxwell's equations for electromagnetism have been called the "second great unification in physics"[5] after the first one realised by Isaac Newton.

The Human species started as being very hairy and living in caves. One cannot get from there to Higgs Boson in one generation.

I do not deny religion Zorro, because I think we do need to believe in something that operates outside of time and space, the physical Universe
we live in.

What has happened is science has progressed extremely quickly in the last 150 years, so a lot of explanations which were offered by religion
are now explained by science.

But I would not take away your religion Zorro.....and the human species are a long way from knowing everything.
I think all bets are still on.
