Lot of people having them into their 40s these days ,dont think its the greatest Idea tbh
Report PatraTheCat • July 17, 2016 3:24 PM BST
I'm 40 and don't have any kids. I'm thinking of getting a vasectomy to make absolutely sure.

It's a bit of a dilemma because I'm comparing two very small numbers: Chance of accidentally impregnating someone despite being relatively careful * not being able to persuade her to have an abortion vs. Chance of suddenly wanting a child despite the fact that the idea currently fills me with horror and I've never wanted one at any point in my life to date.

Then I need to weight the two numbers by comparing how horrible it would be to find out now that I was going to be a father (Jesus that would be extremely horrible) vs. how horrible it would be to want a child and not be able to have one because I'd put myself under the knife of my own free will (Jesus I guess that would be extremely horrible too).

Then I start thinking about scalpels and just put the decision off.

I love my kids with a passion.

Without her knowing my daughter is sitting opposite me talking to me to her mates on Facetime or whatever while I'm here on Chit Chat and Youtube. It's a different way to love kids nowadays but she knows and I know.

I wouldn't change it, ever. My beautiful daughter who I protected and nourished as a child has become a beautiful woman and graduated last week. She makes me proud to be alive but so does me Son and Stepson.

I love talking football with my stepson who knows better than me. Liverpool shiite and a tattoo to prove. His Grandad live's there but it's foreign football to me.

My daughter, the graduate who is now a qualified teacher. I wish she'd teach me lol

And my youngest who teaches me to program miserably, I wish I could party like him as he's with a different bird every week.

I said above why would anyone want a kid but I've just gave 3 reasons to counteract it.

As far as I'm concerned, I discharged my duty to the next generation when I blundered through a year trying to teach English in a school abroad.

Of the two women I've lived with, the first did want children, but not with me thank you very much, while the other one simply detested the little scrotes and couldn't see why anyone would voluntarily muck up their life by acquiring one.

I was fortunate enough to buy a yearling a few years back who won a few races. Maybe some men are blessed with inspirational children and others with a winning racehorse. On the whole I reckon I still would have taken the latter if I'd been offered the choice.

Im 44 and have a child, though me and her Mum are separated. The thing is until you actually have a child it is very difficult to understand what you are missing out on.

The idea of going in and seeing your child peacefully asleep just sounded boring before I had a child yet now it is one of my pleasures in life

Seeing your child win a race at sports day give incredible pride

The though of someone bullying your chikld is genuinely upsetting

The though of what happened to poor James Bulger was something you thought was bad pre child but didnt get to you, yet when you have one it just makes you feel sick to the stomach if you thought it about yours

Having a child makes you want to be a better person, it makes you feel you have a significant role in life, you really are this persons guide in life and they have total trust and belief in you which over the years you feel you dont have anywhere pre children. They give you unconditional love.

However your life as you knew it is over, you lose a lot of independence, a lot of sleep initially, you lose a lot of disposable income, and it is relentless.

Overall though if you have the chance to experience it you should, it will provide you comfort (and worry!) for the rest of your life.

If you think you arent ready for it, trust me you are, because no-one is ready for it, yet you just get through it and you adapt.

You'll be "greened out" on every emotional level you could imagine, and surely life is about FEELING emotion.

It's a rollercoaster no mistake, but if you have the opportunity to then it is my view is you should and you will look back on the life you lead now and realise there was so much missing.

It's not too late if you're in a relationship and the other half wants one too.  42 is late for a woman though so if you are not in a relationship you better hurry up.

I've got 4 kids, the oldest is 19 and the youngest is 10.  The important thing is they are all healthy and happy which I think they are. Tbh I only wanted 2 kids as I thought I couldn't cope with more, and if it wasn't for my incredible wife I doubt I would.  They've bought me many moments of pride and joy, but it's also relentless as the above poster says.  I'm lucky though, that they have such a good mother and me a good wife.  The pressure of children can often lead to divorce and when there are kids involved, it's the man that gets screwed, as I've witnessed with a couple of friends.

Having kids is a gigantic risk, though, isn't it. My life experience has taught me that some people are happy and some aren't, and parents only have so much control over the situation. Good parenting can only get you so far; what happens if you have a fatal heart attack on your kid's fifth birthday, or your child is genetically prone to depression, or the world is about to enter a decade of economic depression followed by war?

I gamble with money, not babies.
