New video uncovers further horrendous cruelty on wool farms.
Dear kenny,

Our latest exposé of the global wool industry is as shocking as ever. An eyewitness who filmed sheep farms in Chile saw animals being mutilated, kicked, cut and stabbed through the neck.

Watch the video to see what wool production really looks like.

What's more, we know that this wool is ending up in products sold by major brands around the world.  Sixty per cent of the wool produced in Chile is sold to a UK-based company, Standard Wool Ltd, which supplies JCrew, Coach and others.

So many people still don't have a clue about the cruelty that's inherent in the wool industry. Crying lambs are separated from their mothers. Their tails are cut off, and notches are cut out of their ears. Shearing is rough, violent and often bloody. And when they're no longer wanted for their wool, the animals are tied up and killed. We need to stop this.

Please help us spread the message that wool is cruel. Share the new video, and next time you're shopping for clothes, check the label and choose items that don't contain wool.

i have seen thousands of sheep sheared and never seen anything like that ,also they slipped in an an animal having its throat cut at the end .Obviously some malpractice here but why not name and shame the people and farm involved ,makes no sense cutting up animals when shearing ,in that sort of hot enviroment where they will become infected and die .
These people were amatuers ,thats not how it is done ,the people here are probably being exploited as much as the animals ,does not mean all wool is bad ,its a natuaral product .
Also recycling would help as well ,were are too lazy to recycle properly .Cloths are more and more coming from China ,made from all sorts of fabrics and textiles ,the UK used to produce somethe  of finest cloth in the world.
This sort of campaign is negative and counter productive ,the wool and meat (mutton and lamb) production go hand in hand ,the more standards we impose on farmers here the more prodcution is moved to places like this.
We need food and we need cloths ,wool is an exellent natuaral product ,the modern alternatives are palstics and nylon ect ,they come from the petro chemical industy ,very harmful to the enviroment ,acologically natuaral products are better ,this vid is misleading and not a reasonable snapshot of the wool industry .

In short ,walofs ...typical kenny stuff ,emotion over logic and reason .

they had to show that throat being cut ,last time i watched sheep shearing i cant recall them cutting throats .

I'm an animal lover, but PETA are bunch of extremist nutcases who seem to do as much harm as good.
Breadnbutter you make some good points. If not wool, what? Hemp? Reed jumpers made using basket weaving skills?
If there as no wool, a by product that allows sheep to live relatively happy lives for a few years, and you exclude meat and knowing PETA, milk, there would be no need at all for sheep.

Good post breadnbutter, but this came from PETA, surely they know a bit about animal cruelty?

Where did you see your sheep sheared?

Re Docking tails, I believe they dock tails to stop the poo that obviously gets into the wool getting maggot infestations etc that are pretty nasty and get under the skin, it's not out of wanton cruelty.

Sheep were mutilated, kicked, cut and stabbed on farms that sell wool to a UK company that supplies JCrew, Coach and others.

Sixty per cent of the wool produced in Chile, including wool from the farms you see in this video, is sold to UK-based Standard Wool Ltd. If you buy wool, this is what you could be supporting.
Lambs Torn From Their Mothers

An eyewitness documented that lambs were separated from their mothers soon after they were born and cried out pitifully.
Lambs jumped through the fence in an attempt to return to their mothers’ sides, but workers dropped them back over the fence to keep them apart.

Mutilated Without Pain Relief

Workers notched and punched holes in the lambs’ ears. To remove their tails, workers either cut them off with a dull knife, sometimes requiring up to five slashes, or tightly banded them – one worker told the eyewitness that banded tails would fall off after a month. All this was done without any pain relief.

Cut, Kicked, and Struck With a Rake

Sheep were crammed tightly into sheds before being sheared. As is common in the wool industry, rough, fast shearing left many sheep cut and bleeding. One worker poured oil on a sheep’s bleeding wound, and another sprayed a sheep’s wounds with insecticide. Workers also kicked, shoved, stomped, and stepped on them, as well as striking them with a rake to push them out of the shearing shed. The eyewitness never saw the animals receive any veterinary care, even for gaping wounds.

Destined for Slaughter

Sheep who were no longer wanted for their wool – including the animals seen below – were marked with paint to indicate that they should be sent to slaughter. Workers also tightly tied some unwanted lambs’ legs together and shoved the young animals onto a flat-bed truck bound for slaughter, where they thrashed around, banging their heads against the floor as they tried to escape.

Killed and Skinned Alive

Workers stabbed fully conscious sheep in the neck. The sheep kicked and struggled as they bled to death. One worker took out his mobile phone while a sheep – pinned down by his knee – fought for her life.

This dying sheep seen below was carried into a room to be skinned and continued to kick for two minutes. Video footage shows one sheep who was literally skinned alive.

Help Us Stop This Cruelty

The cruelty documented at these Chilean sheep farms is not unique, and similar abuses have been documented in the United States, Argentina and Australia – the world’s largest wool exporter.

Don’t forget the gentle sheep who suffer in the wool industry all around the world – choose clothing that doesn’t contain wool.
Please share this shocking footage to help more people learn the truth about how wool is produced.

I'm against animal cruelty for sure, but the alternatives need to be looked at from all angles. Cotton isn't always an acceptable sustitute for wool, and synthetic clothing can be very problematic for the environment like Breadnbutter says. It's a major source of microplastics in the oceans, which is a major environmental problem that causes suffering to marine life! Every time you wash synthetic clothes you realease lots of microfibers that aren't stopped by treatment plants and they end up in the ocean. Not good. Could be better to try and stop sheep cruelty than to increase production of synthetic clothing. Or maybe there are synthetic fibers that are all right for the oceans? What other non-synthetic alternatives are there?

Got to say Kenny that I've got mixed emotions about this.
Obviously the vids are horrendous but I think the statement Wool is cruel won't win many converts.
Attack the practice where maltreatment is taking place but surely it can't be the same everywhere.

here is the sheep shearing i know and have seen ,once seen one with a knick in the lug but that one you posted looked like a blood bath ,butchers imo ,not how it is done and they guys need prosecuted ,no way is that normal animal husbandry.

I do wear wool and i have to trust where it comes from involves a lack of a cruelty -  but none of this surprises me  -   remember how lambs /calves were treated during the Essex ports protests  - people just don't give a sh1t . Sad

All i'm meaning to say is boycott the places where wool is used from places where sheep shearing is cruel, or where there is evidence of cruelty. Not that hard if you do some research. I'm even checking out Marks and Sparks, which hopefully is ok, but a lot of their stuff is made in China!

Trouble is people are too apathetic. Turn a blind eye and pretend cruelty doesn't exist, or in a lot of cases aren't bothered. I do my research when things are pointed out to me.

sent to j.crew earlier, who are mentioned in my opening post.

Hi, PETA sent me this mail, would you like to comment please. Obviously as a reputable company you are unaware of the horrific methods by which wool used in your products is obtained.

sent to M@S

Hi, which country does the wool used in your products come from please?

I have seen some horrific footage and read some awful stuff about how wool is obtained, and although M@S is extremely reputable you can’t see everything, or can you? Do you have your own inspectors at these sheep shearing places to ensure the animal is not hurt in any way? So which country/s and where exactly in that country is the wool obtained?

Many thanks

I think people in general do care and find animal cruelty disgusting when confronted with it but unfortunately it is a case of out of sight out of mind otherwise.
Getting back to the sheep, shearing is necessary and does provide us with a useable product.
Rather wool than meat.
