Obama, Putin or Messi I imagine.  The population of China and India are both more than Europe and the USA combined, so might even be someone like Tendulkar, Yao Ming or Liu Xiang

Most famous, if this is strictly about numbers than famous people from China or India have a case.

But for me most famous means across the world, by number of countries rater than people.

So the likes of Tendulkar or Liu Xiang would be a clear no, Cricket is not on the radar in places like North America, South America, most parts of Europe and Africa

Yao Ming though much more so, Basketball has a much wider appeal that Hurdles and Cricket.

But I would go with Obama, has to be. The American president is always near the top because for 8 years they are pretty much known to absolutely everyone in every country. Messi, Ronaldo and Usain Bolt are in that conversation though.

Don;t think any American sportsperson can be right at the top, very famous in their own countries but not the world over, pretty much most NFL/NBA/NHL player could walk past me in the street and I wouldn't know who they are.
