It's even worse since the smokers were kicked out of pubs and office buildings, as a non smoker, I really don't see why I should inhale second hand smoke, there's almost no getting away from it, so many people smoke. Surely if it was banned in public people would have to wait until they get home, at least they'll be saving some money.

My lungs are being punished for someone else's habit which can't be fair. Probably only a matter of time before it is with a bit of luck.

If everything in the world were new and neat and clean I would not want to live. Certainly i would not trust someone who didn`t like cigarettes.
Thats how it starts.
Report lfc1971 April 21, 2016 2:00 AM BST
I suppose it depends what sort of country or town/city you want to live in.
Perhaps we could have pubs for smokers, and indeed hospitals for smokers only. Financed by the tax on smokers. The tax of course would be only for the smokers hospitals. Non smokers could finance their own hospitals.
Non smokers I suppose may be allowed into smokers pubs, but not into the smokers hospitals. They would not have paid their way having not smoked.
Report lfc1971 April 21, 2016 2:09 AM BST
Allowing smokers to smoke in their own hospital beds may be going too far. But it is something for smokers to decide.
Report Tommy Toes April 21, 2016 7:39 AM BST
Some excellent points there Lfc1971.

I've been a 'vaper' for over 4 and a half years now but am not - and will never be - an anti-smoker.

If it weren't for the smokers everyone would be paying approx 10p more in the pound in income tax to keep the county running.

A fact seldom mentioned by the anti-smoking lobby.
Report johnizere April 21, 2016 7:59 AM BST
Couldn't agree more, Tommy. Been a vaper for nearly 2 years myself, costs me around a pound a week in juice, and the benefit to my health (and those around me) is priceless.
Report Tommy Toes April 21, 2016 8:22 AM BST
It costs me around a fiver a week, Johnizere, but I was a 40 cig a day smoker before I went on the vapes - which would be costing me approx £140 a week these days - with about 90% of the £140 going to the treasury, which equals £126 that I don't have to pay in extra tax anymore.

How bloody chuffed am I!

I was on a 50gm pack of tobacco before the big switch.. somewhere around £15 quid a throw nowadays?
I make my own juice from ingredients bought online... liquid nicotine, polypropylene glycol, vegetable glycerine, and flavourings.
Plenty of info available how to mix together, just follow the simple instructions.
A 10 ml bottle of juice retails around 2.99 around here, can pay up to 4.99 in some outlets!
I reckon I make 10ml for about 45p. Everyone who has tried my juices says they're up there with the best.
You can buy 10ml for £1 at pondshops, but it's carp.

It it weren't for smokers, the cost of the NHS would be a lot less, especially considering lung cancer is the most frequent case they have to deal with. I think that neutralises it somewhat.

Which path will the UK follow?

Almost all retailers and manufacturers will be forced to comply with the TPD as the cost of MHRA liscencing will be to far to high. As it stands, this will mean a reduction of product avaliablity, variation, inovation and choice for the user. It will also mean increased costs which will ultimately have to be passed on to the consumer.
Multinational corporations that can afford the millions of pounds investment for medical lisecening will be able to promote their products more aggresively, with reduced competition. In this way the MHRA are effectively handing the market back to Big Tobacco, the companies who spent much of the last 50 years trying to get people hooked on tobacco cigarettes.

wouldn't know where to start!

As far as taxation on e-juice is concerned, how can they tax glycerine, poplypropylene glycol, and food flavourings as a tobacco product?
Maybe the only ingredient they could target could be the liquid nicotine, which I but at £35 for 500ml... and use just 4ml/20ml bottle of
juice giving around 16mg nicotine strength per 20ml.
A ready mixed juice from the shops could be a different matter for taxation purposes.

Tobacco smoke is dispersed outside Scandinavian, you will not get lung cancer from it.

So why ban it?

It it weren't for smokers, the cost of the NHS would be a lot less, especially considering lung cancer is the most frequent case they have to deal with. I think that neutralises it somewhat.

It still nowhere near compares to what smokers pay in to what it costs to treat them.

The lard-@rses of this world pay nowt in extra taxes - and they are the biggest drain on the NHS these days.

Let's ban the fatsoes.

In fact, let's ban everything and everybody that doesn't happen to be to our own personal liking.

What a glorious world it would be, eh?
Report scandanavian_haven April 21, 2016 6:25 PM BST
Taxation brings in 12 billion from smoking, direct cost to the NHS is estimated up to 6 billion, but then you have to factor in things like sweeping up cigarette butts and putting out fires caused by cigarettes. It also loses tax revenue from lost productivity when people are made ill by smoking.

Anyway this gets away from the main point, why should non smokers have smoke forced into their bodies by smokers? which is why it should be banned in public.

In regards to bad food or anything else not to my own personal taste, then if people want to kill themselves eating rubbish that's simply their prerogative and doesn't impact upon my health at all, second hand smoke is a different issue altogether and can't be compared.
Report Tommy Toes April 21, 2016 6:29 PM BST
If you walk along any main road in this country one gasp of air will bring in more pollutants to your lungs from the passing cars/buses/wagons than spending a lifetime inhaling second-hand smoke from a smoker.
Report scandanavian_haven April 21, 2016 6:34 PM BST
Air pollution cost 40.000 lives a year in the UK
53,800 people die every year from secondhand smoke exposure

Actually those figures on second hand smoke was from a US siteAngry

UK second hand smoke figure is 12,000 so air pollution is a bigger killer but we can't ban cars or any vehicles the economy really would crash, but we can stop non smokers from having people force smoke into their lungs, nobody's habit should be allowed to impact other peoples health, the wine you're drinking is not going to harm anyone else for example.

in Ireland they banned smoking in cars if children are in the car.So drivers who are on long journey,s and respect the law pull over to the hard shoulder to have a smoke .get out and start puffing so the children do not inhale their smoke.
last count was 4 accidents where speeding cars smacked into the parked smokers cars.Thank god nobody was killed ...............yet.
but my guess is that more children will die in parked smokers cars as a result of this new law than the number of  children that die from passive smoking.
