SH. Celebs of the present are characterless, dull, robots these days. That's probably why the above are so fondly remembered.

Bill Werbenuik was a 20 stone professional snooker player who had a medical condition that required him to drink vasts amounts of beer 'a day' to steady his cueing arm so he could play properly. You couldn't make it up, So from all the beer he was drinking his other bodily functions would naturally kick in, so it wasn't unusual to hear him let a 15 second f@rt live on TV while leaning over the table to play a shot. The audience would be too polite to react, then Werbenuik would turn to the crowd innocently and ask 'who was that ?' leaving everyone including the opposition players and refs,in fits of laughter.
Professional Snooker today is finished because the lack of characters in it. It used to get tv viewers of 20 million plus back in the day and all the players were 'household names', what ever that means.

Trillby, Souness was in a Hotel Bar in Liverpool back in his playing days Shocked It wasn't today or yesterday.

Was a works sports day and they were the celebrity guests.
I got an invite cos they did a lot of business with my dad's company.
Won a race and got presented with a pen set and a 5/- PO. Laugh
They arrived in a white convertible with the top down and got a better reception than the Beatles could have expected.

I adored Sir Henry Cecil, slippy blue, was he as nice in real life as he seemed to be?

I could not possibly sing his praises highly enough annie, I met Sir Henry at Newmarket a few times and he was an absolutely, adorable beautiful person. One of my heroes in life in fact and I use that word very sparingly, such a wonderful man he was and I shed a few tears when he passed away.

You and me both, slippy.  I have tears in my eyes now thinking about him Sad

The closest I came to him, apart from racetracks, was at the Chelsea Flower Show!  He was with his wife, the second one, trying to get the tickets he had ordered but they would not give them to him as he did not have any identification!!!!  Being henry he did not say who he was, but my recollection is that I and others told them.

B-B, I didn't receive it mate for some reason. Just got back from from Spain, first holiday with the missus and had a great time chilling out in the sunshine. All is well with me, I don't really punt much these days hence me hardly being on here much, hope all is well with you.

It didn't matter really finish up. I texted that I was coming to London last Friday until Monday as I had some shopping to do, but I ended up going home Saturday morning as the hotel was effing awful. I stopped at the Hilton Tower Bridge, £750 for 3 nights and it was the poorest hotel I have ever stopped in. I went to see War of the Worlds Friday night which I enjoyed but I had prepaid to go up the Shard on Saturday afternoon and then a tour of Buck House staterooms before dinner. I was planning playing poker at The Grosvenor Vic, I didn't even get to go around Borough Market.Sad

I met Henry a few times and he sent me correspondence. He was a wonderful man. Great trainer and great human being. Funny how I first met him. I was talking to friends in the paddock at Yarmouth. He heard the Scottish accent and came over and introduced himself, telling me that he was Scottish himself, which I knew. He was very proud of his Scottish roots. There will never be such a brilliant trainer in our lifetime.

I wish I had known he would eventually marry his secretary, I would have put in for the job!

I was thinking of applying for an office manager position at Newmarket as I thought my knowledge of horseracing, secretarial and accounts would be good.  I wish I had done Sad
