I think most of you are either more cultured or just older, I've gone through the one's I've never heard of but there were two that were more familiar on second look, Jimmy Page and Pete poselthwaite, I'd never of known without looking them up, the rest no chance.

Scandi's list reminds me of a possibly apocryphal story I heard a few years ago.

Graeme Hick had just got into the England team and during a rain break the players had a bit of a quiz.

Hick was asked 'who lives at 221b Baker Street?' to which he said he had no idea.
When he was told that it was Sherlock Holmes he responded 'oh I wouldn't have known that, we didn't do Shakespeare at my school'

I used to have a few words with Brian Clough regularly when he was alive, I used to sit behind him at the Albion. I used to see Ted Moult every Sunday as my great grandad was his farm manager and I used to play chess with Ted's daughter. I used to see Paddy Considine most weekends before we moved as he is the wife's cousin. Met loads of pro footballers when younger but probably non Scandy Haven has heard of.

Didn't Paddy meet Shane Meadows at Burton Drama School? He's a great actor.
By:
Burton-Brewers
When: 07 Apr 16 20:27
yes it was some course at Burton Tech College, I think Shane came from Uttoxeter which is quite close to Burton. Paddy got into his music big time so the acting took a back seat for a while. I think he's making a new film now about a boxer that has a brain injury or something, he's offered the wife's brother a bit part in it apparently.

He's definitely one of our most underrated actors. I've enjoyed most things I've watched him in.

he's a lovely chap who had some dark spells which are mostly behind him now, his dad and 2 uncles used to have me in stitches with the stories of what they used to get up to.

Forgot to mention ...
Kweku Adoboli - In early September 2011, the Swiss bank UBS announced that it had lost over 2 billion dollars, as a result of unauthorized trading performed by Kweku Adoboli, a director of the bank's Global Synthetic Equities Trading team in London.

it's not a wind up, most of these names are from a by gone era and aren't that well known at all, not to my generation anyway, they're from the 60's, 70's and 80's, wasn't born til the late 80's. I'm no fan of Cricket but only reason why I heard of the bolded cricketers is because they have been referenced quite a few times down the years and in Botham's case does a lot of publicised charity work, never once heard the others.

Have every sympathy with you Scandy. People keep posting RIP threads and I have to Google a higher percentage of those than you have done.
We all live on our own little planet governed by our tastes and environment so it can seem strange if others have wildly different experiences and memories.

I've done some googaling and wikkiing, again.

Bill Beaumont - Rugby, retired 1982, no interest in Rugby and years before I was around.
Bilko - is this seargent bilko ? 1955 to 1959 this show ran for, can't say I saw it repeated on TV  in the 90's, we were all about Power Rangers, those mighty morphin power rangersLaugh and Neighbours, everyone needs good neighbours.
Broadway Joe - NFL player who retired in 77.
Buddy Ebsen - American entertainer born 108 years ago, no, lost on me.
Peter Ustinov. -Career highlights
In 1939, he appeared in White Cargo at the Aylesbury Rep, where he performed in a different accent every night.[9]
- we've all seen the Wizard of Oz from the same year, but not this one.
Gareth Hunt - Wiki tells me he starred in Upstairs Downstairs and the New Avengers, now I have heard of both of these but never seen either.
"Black" Jack Delal - can't name many billionaires.
Selwyn Lloyd - a seemingly dull Conservative politician from the 60's and 70s.
Captain Sensible - singer songwriter, never heard of the damned or his number 1 happy talk. Though just having watched whatever I just watched on youtube, I think I'll say no moreCry
Steve Van Zandt - Now although he was in music, apparently he was in the Soprano's for 8 years, for this I probably deserve mocking as it's a show I only ever dipped in and out of as cult as it began in more recent times.
Alan Alda Never seen MASH, though I know many repeats were shown years after.
Lee Majors - Actor, Never seen or heard anything he's been in.
Richie Richardson - see last post.
Jimmy Cricket - I know pretty much all of the modern and classic comedians but not this one.
Patrick Lichfield - zero interests in royals now let alone then.
John Lowe - darts player from the 70's/80's, no interest in darts now nay chance of having heard of one from then, Phil Taylor and Barny or whatever his name is are about the only two I could reference.
Jimmy Corkhill off Brookside - Never watched soap operas, really never understood the appeal or watching a lot of arguing and shouting and people having endless affairs along with disprotionate amount of murders n such a short space of time in such close proximity.
Bill Werbenuik - I like Snooker and know quite a few of the older players, not heard of him.
Joel garner - see last post
tmm
Barnaby Jones - is this Buddy Ebsen? never heard of the show, finished in 1980
Sir Learie Constantine see last post.
Sir Edmund Hillary given he was the first to climb Mount Everest, I may have heard his name in the past, well probably have, but would never have known it off the top of my head, still doesn't sound familiar.
Hugh Gaitskell - politician from over 60 years ago, hardly likely.
Victor Korchnoi - no chess doesn't float my boat. Last he was competitive was early 90's.
Mark Taimanov - see above.

I think you all need to start shaking hands with the present so the thread feels a bit more inclusiveLaugh

I can only speak for myself but the people I mentioned were famous  in their spheres of activity at the time I met them. Isn't that the purpose of this thread? Can't think of many of the people deemed famous at the moment who I would be bothered to meet even if it were possible. There are many long since dead who I would like to have met, for example Epicurus, Charles Darwin, Paul Dirac (feel free to google Laugh) but that's perhaps another thread?

Had a standup row with that actor Aaron Hughes once.

We never shook hands after though.
