Seven bottles of decent red wine for £23.62!

I have never seen wine so cheap as lately with all the supermarkets falling over themselves to go lower and lower.

Currently Tesco has a 25% discount if you buy 6 bottles or more, but the real killer is that some of their best value wines are also reduced even before the discount.

I like Wolf Blass yellow label cabernet sauvignon which in the past I have bought for £10 but is now on offer at Tesco for £6.50 LESS 25% discount!

Again I like Casillero del Diablo cabernet sauvignon which has been retailing for £8 but is now £5.50 LESS 25% DISCOUNT.

The seven botttles I bought today are another real bargain.  'Wotwine' values the wine at £6.00 but Tesco sells it for £4.50 LESS 25% discount. For just over £3.00 a bottle it is a bargain.  The wine is Tesco Vineyards Malbec.  Don't buy the other 'Vineyards' wine as I have tried some and they are not very good.

I know Tesco have been guilty of false 'reductions' of poor wine by selling it overpriced at say £10 and then reducing it to £5 but the above wines are not in that category.  The Diablo red wine was said by the daily mail to be the best value cabernet sauvignon in the world!  I usually read the daily telegraph I might add.

Tesco often do the 25% promotion but normally do not have the reductions on decent wine as well.

I usually like marks and spencer wine but they are a lot dearer, but they have 25% discount promotions as well but they are careful not to reduce them at the same time Sad

Just an update on the wine I bought.

I bought about fifty bottles of wine, and so far I have been only drinking the cheapest bottle of Tesco Vineyards Malbec at £3.38 a bottle.  It is a steal!  Maybe I am drinking it so as to 'save' the more expensive ones, I don't know, but it is very good for the price.

charwell - glad you enjoyed your Amarone.  Of course Amarones are comparable with Barolo if your criteria is simply colour. As for grape "matters not a jot", may I suggest you seriously think about something else to offer advice on.Wink

To suggest that Amarone "knocks Barolo into a cocked hat" is a ridiculous recommendation, particularly given the range of quality in both groups AND more importantly that many people will be surprised at how relatively sweet lots of Amarone is.  Mind you, you'll know this of course, but your reader might notCrazy.

I finished the cheap £3.38, after discount, bottles a couple of days ago.  I will definitely get them again when they get reduced or I have a coupon from tesco, which I have now.  They have sent me £9 off a £60 spend so I will stock up again.  I found that once I started drinking the cheap bottle, I wanted to drink it every day.  Maybe because I knew if I drank one of my more expensive wines I would not like it as much!

Marks and Spencer have one of their 25% of multiples of six bottles again.  As I said before it just reduces their wine to what it should be, not a great saving.  'Wotwine' says their wine is overpriced and I agree.  However, they have one bargain that is brilliant.  I like their malbec Vinalta which usually sells for £8 a bottle but it is currently on offer for two for £12 and then you get the 25% discount on top making it £4.50 a bottle.  'Wotwine' rated this wine at £7.50 a year or so ago and said it was a soft, plummy, full bodied wine and I agree.  I bought 12 bottles today and I am just enjoying a glass Happy  Even if you don't like wine this is a good value one for dinner parties etc.  One thing I do like about marks and spencer wine is that I think their wine would not be adulterated possible as much as other wine.  This wine, vinalta, is produced like some others by a collaboration of their experts and small vineyards so you have more faith in the product.

You came to mind today annie.

I was in Lidl picking up some spuds and when you were talking about Malbec the other night I thought I'd had an Argentinian Malbec last week and very nice it was too but I wasn't totally sure as I'm an occasional red drinker and don't really know what's good or bad and take advice from whatever source.

When I was in today I was having a look and it was there again. They have a rating system and it had about 87 out of 100 which is classed as being a very good one and it was five pounds odd. Worth a try I'd say.

Generally speaking I'm a peaty whisky man myself annie but I find Bourbon also very agreeable and Lidl have one that is in many experts opinions indecipherable from Jim Beam and at a much lower cost. If the recent recession brought one good thing to peoples lives it brought the end of snobbery when it came to supermarkets for most people.

Agree with you about the Vinalta Malbec, I bought 6 today. £4.50 is a good price but it's not an £8 wine imo
Report annie. • May 3, 2016 11:34 PM BST
I agree, Lee, it is almost always the same with marks and spencer wine, not good value.  You have to wait for the 25% reduction just to get it at about the right price.  I buy some wine from there mainly because you hear such awful stories about what they put into wine and the vinalta and others are made jointly with marks and spencers.  But this one was 'double bubble' because it had already been reduced.

When you think that the vinalta at that price is the same as the cheapie 'vineyards malbec' from tesco at £4.50 it looks good.

Alcohol is bad for your stomach.
Many indigestion problems are caused by drinking alcohol.
Your body produces lactic acid from alcohol, this is cleared by your kidneys.
Your kidneys also has to clear uric acid from your food.
In some people the combined load on the kidneys results in the uric acid not being cleared sufficiently and gout can be the result.

If you drink regularly don't rule out getting gout in later life.

If you ever get to Virginia US, they do some mean ones there.   Nicely illustrates a stupid post earlier on this thread that said that grape varieties don't matter - they may not necessarily make a wine good but they can make it interestingWink
Report annie. • May 4, 2016 10:19 PM BST
I agree with you, blackbarn, that grape varieties matter.

I stick with mainly malbec, shiraz, cabernet sauvignon, petit verdot, tannat, and blends of them.  But I am always looking for another grape similar to those. I think there are others but they are more expensive.  I don't mind paying more occasionally, but when you have paid a lot for a bottle and it is not great you feel cheated!  I like full bodied wine.

I went in Tesco today as I had a £9 voucher to spend, so I bought 12 bottles of the vineyards malbec, bringing them down to less than £4 a bottle.

While I was there I looked at the ones I had recommended in the thread header and they were back to normal price.  The Wolf Blass Yellow Label was £8 and the Casillero del Diablo cabernet sauvignon was £8 as well!  When you consider I bought the Wolf Blass Yellow Label for about £4.87 and the Casillero Cabernet for £4.12 when the discounts were on it was quite a saving.  I have loads Happy  I only buy when they have discounts.

Again these are decent wines for the price.  Wolf Blass was winery of the year and the cabernet has been described by the daily mail as the best value cabernet in the world.

Obviously you can get better wines, but it helps to have a cheaper one for the usual daily tipple.  I would like more recommendations for a full bodied red wine, please.

I have been trying to buy the petit verdot from Sainsburys but it is out of stock, so if there is any at your local store I would give it a try soon.
