A lot of stories surfacing about him having sex with children , rape acquittals and sexual abuse.  I never realised most of this I must admit but it's kind of got me thinking maybe he wasn't the icon that he has been portrayed as Sad

Back in those days a lot of people didn't seem to have a problem with an underage girl having sex with rock stars, agree it's just not right. But a lot of those girls dressed-up looked a lot older than they were. And even years before the mid 60s and 70s it seemed to be pretty common in the deep south in America. Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis, P J Proby.

Chuck Berry, Don Henley, Marvin Gaye, Bill Wyman, Woody Allen, Sonny Bono, and Roman Polanski. All of these men either “dated” teenage girls or were involved in some sex scandal with teenage victims, some of them as young as 13. And many many more......

When it comes to age gaps, at 14, 15 or 16 you still have a young girl and the gaps in maturity are far too great. At 21 or 22 you have a young woman. Big difference.

Many artists, Michael Jackson a prime example, arranged an 'out of court' settlement to make their crimes go away.

Yes I suppose that's true. The difficulty is how far do you apply today's standards to events of 40 years or more ago. Savile ( and perhaps Smith ) were in a different league as deeply unpleasant sexual predators and that is colouring the whole discussion I suspect.A lot of highly venerated Vicorian gentlemen should really be villified though they won't have broken any laws. Tha age of consent through the 19th century was 12 or 13 and there were tens of thousands of protitutes under 16 in London alone.

There's no shortage of stories about individuals, but yes Savile was in a different league altogether,
the sickening extent of his perversion was off the scale !

The other thing about today's standards comapred to 40 -50 years ago. I think back then it actually got to the point where the public  became accustomed to this behavior, and many had chosen to turn a blind eye, but not fully understanding how bad it was. Even with Savile there was rumours about him years ago but a lot of it was brushed aside and just regarded him as a dirty old man. But to describe his crimes today as evil misses the mark, he was a deeply disturbed monster.

Looking back it seems as though celebrities in the entertainment industry got to play by their own set of rules, and a lot of stars could get away with almost anything. Then after this whole Savile thing a lot of them are ending up in court (and prison !!!) for something that happened about 35 or 40+ years ago !

A fairly solid debunking in the comments section, apparently the dates don't tally and this particular girl had previously gone on the record to claim that she had lost her virginity to Jimmy Paige.
It has the look of a crock, which isn't to say that Bowie was squeaky clean (who was in those days - judging by today's standards?), but unless there is more compelling evidence, I'm prepared to give him the benefit of the doubt on this one.

They were still criminal offences back then though.

Plod turned a blind eye at best and encouraged it at worst.

We still see a reluctance to deal with child grooming and abuse in 2016, with the police unwilling to charge offenders for under age sex. Hence why all these sex gangs got away with it for many years.

has the age of consent changed in the last 40 years? it seems to me a lot of showbusiness types got away with paedophilia that is wrong.
By:

When: 15 Jan 16 14:57
At the risk of coming across as an apologist, which I am not, the paedophilia is strong in this instance. Paedophilia is the attraction to pre-pubescent children, the age of consent has never, to my knowledge sanctioned that.

sorry desmond if you think it is too strong a word but my dictionary doesnt say pre-pubescent just children. discussing it doesnt make you an apologist, imo. obviously the younger they go for the worse it is but the fact of the matter is that the article the leopard posted shows multiple celebs going in for under age and illegal activity. why are the us authorities still after roman polanski but not after any of these celebs who are still alive?

Guys, I grew up in that era, and in London, it became a 'throphy Fck' for young (between 14 and 18 years old) girls to 'bag' a showbizz personalty (mainly singers/band members) it wasn't a question of roadies finding young girls as much as which ones should we choose from this lot wanting to come to the after show party for drink, drugs, and sex!!.

Different days, different standards, both parties taking advantage of the other, Now we look at it and Quite rightly say the older of the participants, (the 'stars') should have known better,

I've known quite a few girls who went 'hunting' and bragged about their success afterwards, of course there were the usual 'losers' who didn't succeed but claimed they had anyway. Shocked.

Undoubtedly this was 'manna from heaven' for the predatory pedophiles. When I was 15 (1963) It was common knowledge, to keep away from a certain pub in Earls court because of the perv's that used the place Saville being among the most profilic offenders, especially with young boys in those days.

I haven't read or heard these rumours. But I'd take a punt and say they're absolute b@ll@cks.

And shame on you Leopard for adding to the scurrilous nature of this thread and the memory of David Bowie.

His cremation without family friends etc was, and always had been, his request.
He would have known what a sordid tasteless media circus it would have become had it been anything else.

As it is, he only died a few days ago , yet the  muck raking media are falling over themselves  in the trough, in an attempt  to dig something - anything - up, for it's  readers to feast upon.

"His cremation without family friends etc was, and always had been, his request."

Had a distant relation who had this same kind of cremation, when it's time to close the book on your life you are allowed to do it on your own terms. His family friends etc were not there for any part of the process, they just received the ashes afterwards and scattered them at the top of Glastonbury Tor - which was his wish.

My wife didn't like the idea of no funeral but I said that was the way he wanted it.

Bowie was never a Socialist that's for sure. Nor, thank Allah, did he ever pretend to be one.  Bowie did however become an astute businessman, after shall we say his Adult Education Course at the hands of a certain gentleman between around 1970 and 1982.  A gentleman whose voice has sadly not been heard this week.

I can't see anything wrong with the idea, If you have time to say goodbye to family and friends, then why go for the religious remuneration show, (that is a funeral service) especially if you don't subscribe to it.

I'm warming (no pun intended) to the idea. Happy

Don't know about Bowie or other stars but the attitude of most in the 70's was far more relaxed about such things. It seemed that the law was almost guidance. Even in the 80's it was all over the papers about the romance between Bill Wyman who must have been into his 40's and a 14 year old girl. I don't remember too much of a furore. From memory her mum seemed to be okay with it.

Read anything written in the 60s/70s about the music industry and the word groupies will be there.
Young girls literally threw themselves at the stars. Can't remember anyone in the press raising it as an issue.
I think most of a similar age were jealous of them tbh.
Such is social media now that RIP means nowt. Shame
