Leave the job to the civil servants and they'd be running up bills bigger than defence for the job!

That makes two more pensioners this week for tony to add to his tally of old timers popping off during the winter. And all down to the wicked Tory cuts.
Report 1st time poster • January 14, 2016 5:17 PM GMT
all these changes to benefit cuts have very little to do with whittling the small % of people who defraud the system, but everything to do with putting as many hurdles as possible in the way of people who are entitled to benefits in the hope the hurdles stop them applying or sign themselves off, the millions saved can be put together with the other 10,s of millions already saved because older people are to proud to claim what they are entitled to, imo

According to a report from the DWP before Christmas.
As a result of the tests, large numbers of former claimants who were turned away are now in work.
How can you put a price on the difference that has made to their lives?
All they needed was a little push and they've turned their lives around.

I say three cheers for IDS. Keep up the good work.

Every system put in place for everything will be abused by the odd chancer. A bit like the Non tax paying people and companies who take advantage, but most do not abuse anything.

There are many disabled or sick people in the UK, a large proportion of whom will not be physically able to work.
They are an easy, virtually silent, target for the out of touch sociopaths who make the rules (and the money) and make political mileage from telling unbending, unaffected Crippens that what they're doing is "The right thing to do". The poor sods are hungry and cold now (as well as being disabled and sick).

There aren't enough jobs for the people who ARE able to work without keeping on at the ones who aren't.

Also the private sector doesn't necessarily do things better. What they do is make far more profit, make loads of cuts to services and charge far more to everybody for what they do than the public sector.

The sad thing about the garbage I read on this forum is that it just goes to show how easy it is for government spin/advertising/marketing/press assistance to fool some of the people all of the time.

The poor sods are hungry and cold now (as well as being disabled and sick).

Absolute nonsense, disabled people have never been so well looked after as they are now.

Perhaps that's why the figures for people claiming a disability have gone through the roof.
They can get more money if they are disabled.

The only difference now is they are being asked to prove it.
And suddenly many of them are feeling better and finding work. Which speaks for itself.

What about the thousands who were stopped from claiming benefit because they weren't ill and went off and found jobs?
Report Charlie • January 15, 2016 7:52 PM GMT
Crippen
Because people were stopped from claiming benefits and found jobs doesn't mean they were fit for work. Poverty and desperation often go hand-in-hand.  How many of them are still in work and how has their health suffered? Has anyone looked at the possible future costs to the NHS for treating people who shouldn't really have been in work but were forced into it?

The whole system is designed to pamper to Tory middle-class voters. Savings, if any, are negligible. The suffering caused is huge.

Afraid charlie is a defeatist, he would rather have people that are not allowed to escape the welfare system.

I have an Uncle who has issues, but he is made to work in a charity shop 3 days a week, he pretends its a pain in the butt but he actually looks forward to it, plus we get to talk about it instead of discussing how is it sat around at home all day doing nothing.

Report Eeternaloptimist • January 15, 2016 8:40 PM GMT
The background to all this is the assessment Labour commissioned reported back in about 2008/09 which suggested that a significant majority of people claiming they were too ill to work were actually capable of working. That was discussed at length on the politics forum at the time but doesn't seem to be out there on the net now. Something had to be done and it was Labour who started the process. It isn't party political. Thatcher was a big causative factor of the problems we still have. I support engaging with people to help them back in to meaningful employment. Equally I don't like the sick being hounded.
Report Ibrahima Sonko • January 15, 2016 8:47 PM GMT

Statistics mean nowt. In the real world we see people who are seriously ill being forced to work in charity shops or partake in worthless schemes to get their entitled benefits. Government would save more money scrapping these worthless training schemes, which cost a fortune, and just pay the genuine sick their entitled benefits. To suggest that everybody claiming benefits is a scrounger is utter nonsense. Perhaps some of the posters need to get more involved in their communities. Like I said earlier, it's the genuine cases that are more likely to suffer. People who are fit and work shy know how to play the system. There is a sad lack of compassion in this country now and we all know who is to blame for that. I tend to agree with some fair points that EO has made. And before anybody makes a wild statement, I have worked all my life and had my own businesses creating jobs. I see a young woman who is obviously unfit for work go for the bus every day to partake on a scheme, while young druggies don't and get more money than her. One day that poor lass is going to drop dead in the street. I hope I'm wrong on that point.
Report STUDYFORM • January 18, 2016 7:59 PM GMT
My daughter has a friend who has some problems, but still works - full time, even though it's difficult for her. This poor girl has a 16 year old sister who is seriously mentally disabled. Their mother (aged 50) has to be a full time carer and unfortunately has a spinal problem inhibiting her movement, despite this she still works (in the main cleaning toilets in a school) for 16 hours a week. Their father has died.
One week the woman was asked to fill in for a missing colleague and had 2 hours extra duty and so worked for 18 hours.
As a result and with no right to appeal, she was sanctioned and had her benefits (which are vital for her to live on) stopped for a month.
The oldest daughter cannot move back home to live with her mother and sister because she will then become liable for paying the rent, which on its own is more than her (minimum) wage. So, she's fecked and life's already hard enough.
This sort of thing doesn't make good TV or sell papers, but is much more common than the stuff that does.
Not that it's the first time it has been mentioned on here, the scroungers and cheats make up the MINORITY of people who claim benefits.
Still, so long as the politicians and journalists earn plenty and can set rules and opinion the way they want to, there will we be people - as evidenced on here so often - who will continue to spread the word for them.
Report Eeternaloptimist • January 18, 2016 8:19 PM GMT
That's a very sobering story Study. Unfortunately there will be many cases like that but even more examples of people rinsing the system by working 16 hours and making their money up near enough to full time through tax credits. How you help the former and discourage the latter is the question. Osborne seems to be trying to do the latter but I'd agree that the Tories aren't helping the former very much.
