I'd have shut the door in their faces as soon as they announced who they were.

Mac.
One might legally be required (ludicrous) to own a licence, but it's not actually necessary to be able to view anything (even in the United Kingdom). I know a few folks who have never owned a licence. |
|
By:
Funny you should say that xmoney. Years ago, my brother got fined for not having a license and he didn't even have a tv. They entered the house and saw he had a vhs recorder. He argued that he couldn't use it because he didn't have a telly but lost the case because he owned a receiver, the video recorder.

True pokermonster but legally one needs a license.

Yes, I know, sir, but I have decided to break the law. It won't be the first time.

They entered the house
You mean he let them in? My advice is to never volunteer information to anybody, and certainly not let them into your house without a court order. |

Yadda Yadda Yadda - Rascist
Realist I prefer - its my Allah given right to like or dislike who I choose, not the governments. Oh and if you want to give up your TV license then just write to them and tell them you are removing their 'implied' right of access.... tell them you do not have a TV and any visits will constitute harrassment - black yerself up to give it more emphasis ! You can let them in if you want but they will then try and get you to sign a piece of paper - dont sign anything, better just shut the door, they dont have any warrants, they are a private corporation. Theres plenty of vids on youtube on the subject - if the police come witjh the enforcers (they use a private company) tell them they have no need to be there, ask them who they are there representing, remind them they are onlt to keep the peace, ask them outright are they there to protect you not enforce license fees. Als record every conversation and keep asking questions, if the police ask you your name don't answer or else they then have juristiction over you. Just need to pop off and check all my rascist threads and stick a few more pokers in the fire. |

Seems to me if you don't listen to the bbc radio or watch their tv channels it is unfair to force you to pay for it
one of the few things where you have to pay for something you don't use.The licence fee should be scrapped |

It is a television reception licence. It permits the use of equipment which is designed to work within certain bandwidths. UHF, I seem to remember?
|
|
By:
That TV mobile licence detector van was a complete and utter total con! The electrical/electronic engineers that I worked with insisted that they couldn't detect electronically from a van in the street if you (a) possessed a TV, (b)whether it was on or off at the time and (c) what channel you were watching at the time.
The whole thing was a disgrace and was just put in place to frighten the public into thinking that they would be found out and get caught. The only way they could tell if you had a TV was when they knocked on your door and either saw and/or heard a TV in your house whilst they stood at the front door talking to you! |
|
By:
I wouldn't take the chance these days that they haven't got the equipment to detect a television receiving transmissions in a home.
|
|
By:
All they wanted, then and now, is for people to abide by the law and pay for their television reception licence. Without it, you are breaking the law if you watch, or record, 'live' television programmes on any channel, via any source.

By:
Television screens give out certain emissions when they're on.
Can't these emissions be read from outside with the right equipment? |
|
By:
Well, take it from me - they haven't!
|
|
By:
No they don't - TV screens do NOT transmit anything whilst they are on - that is a total myth that they want you to believe in.
|
|
By:
The BBC never uses evidence of detection in court as proof of someone receiving without a license.
This apparently is because they would have to declare the technology involved in the detection. So they need other evidence to prosecute. If they can't see or hear the set on from outside and you don't let them into your home they're snookered. Although they might trick their way into your home. |
|
By:
A couple of letters here say you can detect a working television yourself by using a radio:
The first about a dozen letters down and another further on. http://www.theguardian.com/notesandqueries/query/0,5753,-22440,00.html |

The TV emits tachion waves of 'Bullshit' which is easily detected.
|

This comment from that link is the correct one ....
'First of all, line flyback, line sync, sync seperators. These are a part of all CRT circuits (be it T.V. or a p.c. monitor), and cannot be detected accurately, from more than 1ft away from the appliance. All CRT devices and appliances are adequately shielded to prevent the emission of harmfull radiation, and in any case, the EHT and shielding (earthed),would prevent smaller signals from interfering with other equipment thus eliminating any signals that tranverse the air waves before they get a chance to.' One of our engineers at work knew someone who was a contract engineer who worked for a time for the BBC to fit out some of those so called 'detector vans' and he said that all they did was fill the van with oscilloscopes and the like, but they weren't plugged into anything. The only time that they energised the equipment was when the BBC made an advert showing these vans going around the country 'detecting' active TV's. Absolute and total bullshit and anyone writing on that forum in that link is either lying or totally ignorant. |

I have been in my new flat for nearly two years now and after several letters from them and phone calls from me stating I do not have a tv , I have received a letter from the licensing today that they will not contact me now by letter for at least two years. Hooray, result.
HOWEVER, they still add that they can visit me to check. |
|
By:
"BBC- and become so absurdly PC"
Couldn't agree more ...hardly ever watch it - be broadcasting in Arabic (for the Muslims) soon ? BBC - pile of **** ! |
|
By:
"HOWEVER, they still add that they can visit me to check"
Two mates of mine ...both quite wealthy (tight buggers) and one a legal expert don't pay ...the legal Eagle says - they have no right of entry into your property so unable to check. Just don't let them in. |
|
By:
Thanks Rockinron, but I really do not have a tv so I have no need to fear them turning up. But that is handy to know if I do get a tv and forget the license!

What woman would choose not to have a TV, dave? A very strange one I'd say.
