Football legend Paul Gascoigne is at the centre of a 'hate crime' investigation by police after allegedly telling a 'racist joke' while on stage.
It's claimed the Geordie star drew gasps after stating he wasn't be able to see a black security guard's face in poor light during a show at Wolverhampton Civic Hall last month.
West Midlands Police have now confirmed an investigation is under way after speaking to the victim.
An audience member said - 'Gazza knew what he'd done straight away. There were gasps. It's such a shame because he was really on form, the best I've seen him for a long time.'

Security guard was, apparently, a straight A student and a mussie,

I remember a few years ago ... maybe 7 or 8 ... I was driving to work with radio on and Sarah Kennedy (BBC radio 2 early morning) said that while she was driving to BBC Television Centre that morning she nearly knocked down a black guy in dark clothes who was crossing the road - she didn't see him.
She made the comment in a matter of fact way, no joke, just part of her (usually inane) chatter. Cue uproar and eventually Sarah Kennedy no longer at BBC. |

Like many such incidents they are all designed with a very specific purpose in mind of cowing the populace roger. The legislature pass what appear to be poorly drafted unneccessarily widely drawn and then the police go to work. The problem with this is that historically we are a pretty horrible awkward lot and our common law developed with a nod to this. We are free to do anything we want as long as it isn't proscribed by law. Nobody guarantees our liberty. It is granted to us as free born Englishmen. This is good enough for many of our cousins around the world with their own legal systems particularly America.
This can be contrasted with Roman based law continental legal systems where the state itself grants rights, liberties and freedoms. Since the European Communities Act we have been gradually bending the knee. I'm not sure this is a good idea given our national character. |

When did 'man the fk up and get over yourself' stop being really really sound advice? Because you get trivial stuff like this happening to high profile targets like Gascoigne. Meanwhile the kid with the Asian surname gets his CV shuffled to the bottom of the pile when it comes to the job application or the slightly camp 14 year old gets his head kicked in by a gang of 'alpha' classmates and fk all gets done. |
