farah never gets the votes he deserves. that certainly won't be changing this year with all the adverse publicity over his coach
should have been top 2 at worst in 2012 and somehow finished 4th. winning the 10000m to complete the 3rd gold of 3 that night was by a million miles the sporting moment of the year |

TheChaser, I have never voted before, although this year I have voted online for Dan Carter to win the Overseas Award, so I am registered to vote. Whether I actally get round to it is another thing

Let me tell you people one thing for nothing. Your man Clydebank knows jackshiit about boxing. Calzaghe was a fraud. In his and their primes he could have gone into D_Man's or Jones' backyards to take on the top fighters. He didn't. He chose to fight for a dump belt in a dump division until they all got too old. Even then most people thought Hopkins beat him. The man was a joke.
As for Wlad it's amazing the number of bums coming out of the woodwork saying he was this or that. I told everybody pre fighting why Fury's style, ability and size could be a disaster for Wlad. Beware of imposters people. You'll get the scoop from the man who knows. |

EO, so I got taken in by Joe
in my defense, I was a casual boxing fan by this time. Jones one of the best I've ever seen, ![]() |
By:
Sadly, yes boxing. I don't know for sure if Joe went down a blind alley because of his association with Frank Warren but he spent far too long in the wilderness fighting in Welsh castles. The sad thing being he really had talent and could have been the best to come out of Wales. Maybe even challenging Jimmy Wilde. The fact is that he didn't. He padded his record with average fighters, poor fighters, old fighters and fighter tailor made for his own style.
A great waste in My view. No real students of the game would have him in an all time top 50 in the pound for pound debates I feel and yet his talent could have seen him well up there. |
By:
At his best Jones was so far clear of the field boxing. He probably ruined himself going up to heavy to fight Ruiz but until then we were blessed to see true greatness. I remember him schooling a rising Hopkins and embarrassing the man Benn and Eubank did'nt want in Toney.
By:
Didn't he offer to fight Benn and Eubank together or is that an urban myth, he was dead keen to fight Mike Tyson.
By:
I don't know if it's urban myth but he was quite clear about Tyson. He's supposed to have said in his own words that Tyson had too much biitch in him. All you had to do was stay with him and hit him back. Easier said than done but the boxers who gave Tyson a hard night refused to be intimidated by him. Tyson fan boys always make me laugh. They assume he'd walk through the greats forgetting what made them great in the first place. Top 15 for me but he wasn't able to work himself out of a hole with the possible exception of Botha.
On the Eubank/Benn issue they had a live link up with Toney who offered to fight them on the same night but Toney was the king of that sort of thing. It's funny' for no particular reason I was running through the pioneers in my head being the boxers who either took a leap forward or were massively ahead of their contemporaries. I'd broken it down post war and had some good names cooking up. I'd got Robinson in the 40's, Ali in the 60,s, Duran in the 70's, Leonard in the 80's, Jones in the 90's and Mayweather in the 00's. Maybe Golovkin will be the man for this era. My problem has always been the 50's. Many great fights and fighters but who is there? |
By:
Good list, for the 50s Rocky Marciano has to have a shout.
By:
La Motta joked, that he fought Sugar Ray so many times "it's a wonder I don't have diabetes!"
By:
The BBC will rig the vote.
By:
That's the big issue I have with the 50's. Great fighters either fighting for a few years like Marciano or others past their best like Pep and Saddler. Marciano's problem is that it was an average era for heavies and he refused to stick around to take on guys who he thought threatened his unbeaten record.
By:
Yep it's a hard era, but if you have to pick one ??? good talking to you EO, you know your stuff, I'm offski GN and GL.

Bit generous to give Leonard the 80s when his record for the decade was 10-1-1 and at least one of the wins and the draw were miscarriages of justice.
As for the 50s, I'll go for Archie Moore. A bit more active than Leonard, he went 67-3-2 despite already being 33 on 1/1/1950. |

It's a bizarre world we live in these days where people on social media appear to scour the internet for things they can take offense from.
I like Tyson Fury, I've followed his career since he first appeared on Setanta in about 2009 and I was delighted he won the Heavyweight Title and whilst I have an interest in him speaking about boxing, his career and upcoming fights I have absolutely no interest in listening to him speak about his personal life or his beliefs. I imagine these people signing this petition have had even less interest in his views and personal life than me so why do they give a **** now? Because they see someone with a view or opinion they disagree with and wish to castigate the person for it. He was asked questions in an interview and he answered them honestly. Don't really agree with him but refreshing none the same. |
By:
Cassius had similar issues
By:
Yes but Cassius was black, even though his rasicim towards joe Frazier was terrible, it was allowed because he was black

By:
Shrewd.....
"He was asked questions in an interview and he answered them honestly. Don't really agree with him but refreshing none the same". "Don't REALLY agree with him" = Don't totally disagree with him . "Refreshing" = well. perhaps I do agree with him ![]() |

Okay then Blackbarn if you're going to be a pernickety prick.
Disagree that the legalisation of abortion and homosexuality are 2 of 3 criteria required before the devil comes home and indicate we are near to Armgeddon and that a womans place is on her back and in the kitchen. Agree that Jessica Eniss slaps up well and looks good in a dress. Refreshing = was asked a question and actually gave his opinion as opposed to lying , being evasive or not answering the question because he was worried about his corporate image or potential sponsorship rights. |

Archie was great and you could give him the 50's but is it by default? Where are the super fights? Who are the top fighters he beat? Who did he lose to? Did he herald in the era of the multi weight champs? Did he make Duran quit? Did he stop Hearns or best the great Hagler? All that and so much more. Quality over quantity every time for me. |
By:
What was the story behind Floyd Patterson EO? I know he became youngest ever champion but did the mob get to him later?
By:
Blimey, I appear to have touched a nerve
Anyway for the avoidance of doubt....I believe that current and recent past legislation regarding abortion and homosexuality is moral, reasonable and sound. I do not believe that a woman's place is on her back or in the kitchen (unless through her own free will and informed choice) I do not know Ms Eniss - do you mean the athlete, in which case I have no idea what point you are making. Thanks for the clarification re refreshing; I don't share your apparent view that honesty in any form is laudable, but whatever... . |

Floyd nervous wreck
By:
Maybe it is by default to an extent but 72 fights is going some to actually earning it. The three losses were to Hall of Famers Howard Johnson, Rocky Marciano and Floyd Patterson. Admittedly he didn't make Duran inexplicably quit, or KO the Hitman. However, neither he NOR Leonard bested Hagler!

Archie Moore appeared in a few films, the best of being, Huckleberry Fin (playing a slave) and The Carpetbaggers
By:
They all say that mikael.☺ You didn't tell me who he beat to compare with Leonard's victims.
By:
So you don't think Hearns got robbed, and Hagler mugged?
By:
Mighty
I don't think anything really happened with Floyd. He was a natural middle but Cus wanted a heavy champ and in an era of 180lb heavies it was feasible. Cus tried to nix the Liston fight purportedly because of the mob but Cus knew Sonny was far too big and good for Floyd. |
By:
Hagler mugged himself the vain old goat. He tried to beat Leonard by walking him down and let him steal the rounds. I prefer to remember Hearns and indeed Leonard when they fought at their best. By 88/89 they were two bald men fighting over a comb.
By:
And you still haven't given me the names to compare.

This is wiki, so made up shyte etc...
Moore holds the record for the most career knockouts (131) in boxing history. Moore was a highly strategical and defensive boxer, with a great chin and blundering power, he ranks #4 on The Ring's list of "100 greatest punchers of all time". Moore is rated by prominent boxing website BoxRec as the greatest pound-for-pound boxer of all-time.[1] Now, you ask me who he beat? Admittedly most I've never heard of. He did beat Joey Maxim twice though, and avenged the defeat to Johnson. Put Marciano on his arse. He gets the 50s from me, damn it! |
