no the mujahadeen were not the taliban, and aq was again entirely different even though it may have found refuge and funding in places like afghanistan, saudi, iraq and from a few others, including the self flagellating do gooder leftists who continue to support islamic terror groups and their proxies. it's true that the carter presidency ineptness opened the door for the soviet invasion, the civil war there, the mujahadeen, and the start of us involvement, but it also allowed the second major terrorist front with the iranian islamic revolution. 2 huge problems still not resolved, and iran and afghanistan were both secular prior. the obama ineptness (some would claim policy, hard to say which) is worse on a number of levels though.
