this is part of the general dumbing down of society. BBC are the cheerleaders for this appeal to the lowest common denominator - watched the 9 o'clock news the other day - made John Craven's Newsround look high-brow. the word "twice" has been outlawed now too it seems - it's now "two times". Too much for the masses to understand.
Report Mikael D'Haguenet • November 13, 2015 5:20 PM GMT

Report Mikael D'Haguenet • November 13, 2015 7:49 PM GMT

It's always been train station I think in my circles.

"Coach - charabanc"

How old are you, 120?! A charabanc was a different thing really anyway.

Cab used to be taxi - Still Taxi I think
Cinema was pictures - I don't mind either, what I don't like is "Movies", very yank.
Medic - doctor - Still doctor unless you're on as stretcher in a Chinook?
Apartment - flat - still flat imho, but another yankification perhaps.

"Lunch used to be dinner and
Dinner used to be tea when I were a lad."
I think this is just regional. Oop North it's still Dinner and Tea.
Report Ramruma • November 14, 2015 1:23 PM GMT
Station was always station -- not railway station or train station, just station.

There's a point where dumbing down becomes infantalisation -- reached when the health information adverts started talking about poo instead of faeces.

Report mememe • November 14, 2015 10:11 PM GMT
Evening all ...

Station was Police Station, probably still is.

Railway station is the, err, railway station - where the trains live.

I'm sorry to say those posters who contend it's just station that, on this occasion, you're wrong and don't win this week's star prize - a three piece suite.
Report mememe • November 14, 2015 10:17 PM GMT
I've reflected on my recent proclamation and in hindsight, I agree that when I was young the station was indeed the railway station, and that my family -from oop t'north - did call the railway station the station.  In fact the pub next door was called the station arms.

But you still can't have the 3 piece suite

I'd say you'd only call it a station if there was no bus station?

For me it was always train station. But that's because it's shorter and less sylables, "Railway" is just showing off, and where I'm from, you'd get beat up for it LaughTongue OutWhoops.

The railway station was known simply as The Station because the omnibus arrived later, as is so often the case.
