Barely 2 months to go and tescos only had one aisle devoted to "seasonal goods" rather than the whole store garlanded in garish decorations. Sure it used to start about a week after the back to school season finished...ie. Early September.
The Christians decided to celebrate the Birth of Jesus at the same time at which the non-Christians had for thousands of years been celebrating the days getting longer again after the shortest day (21 Dec.). Holly and ivy, yule logs, evergreen fir trees ... just about all the stuff of Christmas had been part of the pagan celebrations of the solstice ages before the God-botherers emerged.
I suppose the thinking was that if people were already joyfully welcoming the birth of a new year, then you could claim that they were actually celebrating the Birth of Christ, and were all members of your religion.
