In the good old USA they already are saying "Happy Holidays"!

It's because of the pagans, not the Christians.
The Christians decided to celebrate the Birth of Jesus at the same time at which the non-Christians had for thousands of years been celebrating the days getting longer again after the shortest day (21 Dec.). Holly and ivy, yule logs, evergreen fir trees ... just about all the stuff of Christmas had been part of the pagan celebrations of the solstice ages before the God-botherers emerged. I suppose the thinking was that if people were already joyfully welcoming the birth of a new year, then you could claim that they were actually celebrating the Birth of Christ, and were all members of your religion. |

By:
Oh, well wish we would celebrate the longest day rather than the shortest day. Bloody pagans, theyve always been trouble.

I see they've deleted rob_dylan's post yesterday evening in which he complained about having to take his Bank Holidays in lousy weather in the middle of winter because of a bunch of Christian fairy stories. (Hence my post about how the Christians just hijacked pagan midwinter celebrations.)

Good news if it is starting later.
Maybe a good strategic target would be to aim for the 12 Days of Christmas starting on the 25th of December. |

All the christmas cards I send out are by that modern toss firm Sultan. I think they are brilliant:

Worth buying Private Eye every fortnight just for the Modern Toss "Desperate Business" cartoon.
Miserable chav couple seated in cinema. The bloke's holding up an i-Pad. "Oi mate!" says the usher. " It's illegal to film in here." "I'm not filming. I'm watching something else." |
|
By:
ha ha screaming, never knew they were in private eye, might consider buying it for the first time in about a decade now.

From the 9 January edition this year. Miserable looking bird sitting in armchair unwrapping DVD in front of her fella.
"Didn't I give you this for Christmas?" "Yeah, I didn't like it. Happy birthday." |
|
By:
i've got that one as a birthday card right next to me in my desk now. I've 15 of them in my top drawer, follow that link to their website, some of the cards are great. Cheese and Wine are good also Work. Loads of great christmas card ones too. Possibly my favourite is Cheese and Wine:
Man 1: Have you heard about Peter's new car? Man 2: NO. Have you seen my sign? (He's wearing a big sandwich board saying "fk off I'm not interested") |

Vicar and a few fed-up relatives gathered around a freshly dug grave. Bored-looking pall bearers approaching with coffin. One of them is holding out something towards one of the relatives.
"Have one of our loyalty cards. I've already stamped it for this one." |
