Good idea. Other things like Betfair exchange are worth including, so long as we don't mention Paddy Power.

I think that many of those that died in WW2 died defending our country and our way of life.
Those that died in Iraq and Afghanistan is a different matter.

utter blox ........... those that survived came back and voted in a completely new government that brought in the NHS and nationalise major industries.

How is that defending our way of life ?

That's utter nonsense. Soldiers have no say in what wars they take part in.
Try telling that to a veteran of either of those wars and you'll get the fight you are talking about on another thread.
My money would be on the soldier.

I actually highlighted the wrong post. i meant to highlight this.

Actually to expand a bit, I don't like all this putting the armed forces up on a pedestal either.  Maximum respect going out to the WW2 lot, a proper justified war that and I take my hat off to them.  But help for heroes is basically helping people that went to Afghanistan and Iraq.  For me the juries out on Afghanistan, but Iraq was a totally unjust war and the people that took part in it in the name of Britain aren't heroes for my money I'm afraid.  Sure many of them don't agree with the war themselves but did it simply because it was their job.  I don't hate them, sure most of them are good people.   But not heroes.

How are they not heroes. They do a job that very few would have the balls to do and many of them paid with their lives.

BTW we were asked to go to Afghanistan to help the current regime and in Iraq we toppled one of the worst dictators that ever lived.
But as I said that's academic to the soldiers. They have no power over where they go and what wars they fight.

My point is that is why I don't put them on a pedestal aka.  They are willing to blindly fight whom ever their boss tells them to fight.  I'm sure they are brave but when that fight takes us to somewhere like Iraq and there are 100,000 minimum dead on the back of a pack of lies, I don't particularly respect them for taking part.  Though Tony Blair and those that voted for him are more to blame.

Our armed forces exercised plenty of control over these stone-age fk wits while we were still there in Afghanistan and Iraq. It's only when we pulled out that that the stone-age fk wits got organized and took over the weapons we left behind for the Iraqi government.

We had years and years of security in Europe thanks to the decision to send our men and women into the Middle East to control the stone-age fk wits with the only weapon they understand - guns.

There have always been violent Islamic fundamentalists in Iraq. Rashid Ali's 1941 rebellion, with the support of the Germans and Vichy French, came very close to cutting off Allied oil supplies.

People in N. Korea are being imprisoned tortured and murdered. This has been happening to hundreds of thousands of people, whole familes and generations of people have lived their entire lives in this hell, as brutal and evil a regime as has ever existed...this has been going on for the best part of 50 years as people are born and die in this nightmare...held in place by a brutal and mad dictator.

No price would be too great to free these people.

Yes that crossed my mind, I would go as far to say that even that  possibality is something that must be faced.
In the final analysis Britain faced the prospect of complete destruction against nazi germany. This is something that could have meant the end of millions of lives., indeed millions did die....if Britain and the US and the rest of the world turn away from Korea then karma is going to destroy us. A coward dies a thousand times before his death.

When required to be sworn in as a juror, one is permitted to use a form of words which do not mention an imaginary deity. If people are required to sing the words of the National anthem there should be an alternative form which mentions neither god nor monarch for those who don't subscribe to those ideas, for example
We love our rainy land
It's such a lovely land
We love our land.
There could be a verse for each country of the union in addition to the general chorus.

Anyone like to compose more verses?

Strictly speaking there is no National Anthem as it has not been made so by Royal Decree or Act of Parliament. It has just been adopted through custom and practice.

GSTQ is a CRAP anthem and must be the world's only anthem which praises a personage and not a country, flag or people.

That apart, monarchies are a total anachronism and only exist because their forebears, back in the mists of time, were the meanest and hardest thieves and robber barons around, who, once they'd eliminated the opposition, called themselves king (or queen). Even if you HAD to have a monarchy, the present mob in Buck house are probably nowhere near "rightful".

I didn't say places with royalty or religion are free. I said places without royalty or religion are never free.

Chuck out the head of state, crack down on the priests, replace them with elected representatives and, hey presto, you have North Korea.

What a depressing thread, its easy now to see why ye are going to lose your country, none of ye have the will to defend it.

Your forefathers created this and ye have a duty to preserve it and hand it on to your own children but ye appear so feckless it can't survive.

Wesdaq still living in ignorance. The Queen only retains about 10% of her income and donates the rest to the treasury.

FKS SAKE no one cares!

Not one  of the bunch of tw@ts that comprise our National Football side sings the bloody, bleeding, effing National Anthem before a  game bar John Terry and he's tone deaf! Rooney can't remember the words, Hart's busy messing with his hair and when Lampard tried he blew pie crumbs all over his shirt.

If they can't be @rsed nor should we.

Jesus, if we're putting up John Terry, Wayne Rooney, Hart and Lampard as shining examples that we should emulate then we are utterly fecked.

(I haven't just replied to my own post by the way).

I think some people aren't so fond of Charles as he's had a lot of media grief and has been his own worst enemy, but they like Bill and Harry. They had an excellent adventure or something?

When William gets coronated, watch for Lampard appearing with a crown on for the photos Silly
