is this kneeling something he has to do to become officially an MP? like one of the things the sinn fein lot won't do through principle. Well if so then I would say this is something where he should compromise, bite your tongue and do as you are told until you're in. Then bring them down from within. No need to compromise on the anthem singing though, just don't do sing, why should you?

It is certainly one of the better anthems..it sounds like a nataional hymn not something from the circus like most of them.

As some of remarked elsewhere, our national anthem would be more suitable for North Korea.

Don't think. Don't question. Shut the fck up and obey. These people are better than you because they just are. God should save the most privilaged woman in history because he just should. Look at the flag and be grateful for what you have. Bow before the Queen or we will call you a terrorist.

I favour a more football chant type of anthem. Maybe "Here we go here we go here we go"

Her Majesty favours "Who's the b@stard in the beard?"

Republicans have expressed opposition to a compulsory oath made to an unelected monarch.
Tony Benn in 1992 stated, when he took the oath, “As a dedicated republican, I solemnly swear…”. In the 1997 election, "As a committed republican, under protest, I take the oath required of me by law, under the Parliamentary Oaths Act of 1866, to allow me to represent my constituency … Later stating, "When one looks at the oaths of a Privy Counsellor, a Member of Parliament and the Sovereign at the coronation, they throw an interesting light on the obligations by which we are bound. The reality is that nobody takes an oath to uphold democracy in Britain. The Queen takes an oath to govern the country and uphold the rights of the bishops. We take an oath to the Queen. Nobody in the House takes an oath to uphold democracy in Britain." Kevin McNamara stated: "The era in which it was thought to be appropriate for legislators to set a political or religious test for those deemed acceptable to enter the parliamentary club has long since passed. … The only test for inclusion and membership of this House should be the will of the electorate, freely expressed." Dennis Skinner stated, “I solemnly swear that I will bear true and faithful allegiance to the Queen when she pays her income tax”. Tony Banks was seen with his fingers crossed when he took the oath in 1997.[27] Richard Burgon in 2015 prefaced his oath by expressing his support for constitutional change for an elected head of state: "As someone that believes that the head of state should be elected I make this oath in order to serve my constituents" |

The funniest was the Sheridan rabble being sworn in at Holyrood although Banks with his crossed fingers comes close.

I think this should be our national anthem...
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=iijymyqTVlg I was in amongst them when that was filmed, never have I been more proud to be English than when we were singing that. Happy days. |

new labour MPs have told Corbyn to sing next time
![]() apparently he's agreed ![]() |

Every young person should sing the n ational anthem at start of class. Look at how beautifully disaplined most other nations schoolchildren are compared to the awful British children, especially in state schools.

It would do the Scots a lot of good, their education srandards are dreadful.

By:
I'd rather stick rusty pins in my eyes than sing the national anthem.

What's yer address Slippy and I'll send you the pins.

Dulwich Village, London SE21 c/o S.Blue esq and they will find me. Akabula I just could not possibly sing that whatever the forfeit involved.

Would you sing Rule Britannia if that was the NA?
|
|
By:
none of you will be singing the national anthem
you wont have a choice when the swarm take over |

When six nations time comes around it is always a reminder of what better national anthems the other countries have compared to us.
|
|
By:
You would tire of the other anthems very quickly.
|

By:
I have always liked the french and russian anthems. But I wouldn't sing those either.

I don't think its admirable not to sing the national anthem , not at all.

I like the Welsh anthem.

We could have easily had a republican president Blair at one time. How many would be regrettng that now ?
|
|
By:
it was only the tory press that started crying about Jeremiah not sing the anthem
|
|
By:
Agh, but thats what we would expect of the type that don't sing the national anthem anxious, strange bods mate.
|
|
By:
I am sure (hope!) that this is somewhere else on this thread but surely as an avowed republican, he would have been pilloried by the same press as a hypocrite had he sung it.

He's quite happy singing "the red flag" which has the lyrics "Though cowards flinch and traitors sneer", I think that line pretty much sums Corbyn up.
|
|
By:
To show how absurd our "national" anthem is, our own head of state does not see the the need to sing it.
Does she deem herself to be above the nation? If she does not sing it, why should anybody else be required to? |
|
By:
It's a bit like people singing happy birthday to you Wesdaq and you don't join in then do you.
|
|
By:
Ah, so the queen is the nation?
|
|
By:
No the queen is the queen and people are singing God Save our Queen.
|
|
By:
Which is fine.
But don't you think that the nation should have its own song? |
|
By:
Gosh - some good stuff on here
Re Her Majesty - she never sings, does she? - the anthem being a tribute to her and her institution. Re Corbyn singing the Red Flas - I assume that the sung words of the Red Flag dont cause him to compromise his beliefs. |

If North Korea's national anthem was "God Save Our Dear Leader" would anyone think it sensible?
|

By:
I think it would be sensible to sing it.

I think it's just a tradition Wesdaq, a part of our past.

When required to be sworn in as a juror, one is permitted to use a form of words which do not mention an imaginary deity. If people are required to sing the words of the National anthem there should be an alternative form which mentions neither god nor monarch for those who don't subscribe to those ideas, for example
We love our rainy land It's such a lovely land We love our land. There could be a verse for each country of the union in addition to the general chorus. Anyone like to compose more verses? |
