Any young British person wanting a house and a job might be better off finding another country if Corbyn comes to power. He wants to bring refugees to this country, and they will have priority. We saw that clearly yesterday.

well Id rather not be a voice piece of any politician, espaecially one I know so little about, I was essentially saying let the young decide who arnt tainted by the same misgivings of the old.
That misgiving isnt new, every generation is more accepting than the previous. My own personal opinion about the supply and demand issue regarding housing is that I am generally incredulous how the old, who have had the luxury of dabling on the housing market, seem to think their personal 'worth' is equal to the amount they artificially made doing nothing. |

The left love to bang the drum for the young and why not? They lack wisdom, judgment, are easy to indoctrinate and get carried away with emotion. Consequently they are disproportionately left leaning until they grow up. Very well put indeed. Corbyn will make it policy to give the vote to 16 year olds. NAP. |

Agree 100% with that dusty.

There certainly is a sense of entitlement of some older people who if they were starting out today wouldn't have a chance of owning the house they now live in.

Haters come in many shapes and sizes; unfortunately for Britain we have had some of the biggest haters of all running the country. Thatcher who hated the unions and the working man. Then we then have new labour who hate themselves and the traditional people culture of this country. A sorry bunch of bastards indeed. |

Why wasn't the housing market regulated decades ago?
Inflation would be declared as say 5% whilst property went up by 10-20% and not included in official inflation figures. It is/was/will be the elephant in the room. The problem has NEVER been wages. It has always been the housing boom. |

They would if population levels were the same as in the past, its only immigration that is driving up property prices. With the contraceptive pill the population should have fallen and in turn property prices should have leveled off, with some of our shoddy old housing been demolished. |

I don't think the problem was housing when the Major government allowed it to correct Injera. The problems start when government seeks to safety net things. History has shown it invariably turns from a net to a hammock and the galling thing is that the people who are being cosseted also invariably think they are smart rather than lucky.
|
|
By:
The funny thing is that the same people advocating unlimited immigration from the third world are also the people who constantly spout on about climate change and they don't see the obvious link (assuming that they are right about man made global warming).
|
|
By:
Way before Major, the boom was in full swing. Yet still people could only borrow 3x the man's salary. (His overtime would not be included nor his wife's income).
Once lending/borrowing was deregulated it was an inflationary disaster. Average price of a 1 bed flat where I live is 140k. Good luck to first time buyers.. ![]() |
|
By:
That I agree with Injera. Abandoning prudence on lending was another symptom of the madness but allowing markets to correct helps to prevent future booms. Underpinning them and abandoning prudent lending amongst other things as led us to where we are.

100% correct. |

I see one of the main tenets of socialism 'the gospel of envy' has raised its ugly head, (lets all blame the old!!!) Of the thousands of socialists I have come across over the years, most had nothing and the problem is they wanted to share it with everyone!!!.

By:
...while those who made a pile made it away from regulation and had no correlation to personal merit
|
|
By:
You know it's funny how the people who beseech the rest of us not to scapegoat do exactly that when it suits. Imagine if someone made the leap from an acknowledgement that young black men are disproportionately involved in muggings to an assertion that black people are muggers because in essence Dusty has scapegoated the old in the same way.

Life is often unfair Dusty. Give me a world where I take my chance on getting rich or dying poor rather than the micromanagement socialists are prone to. Yes I know the game is **** in favour of the few and thus my chances are diminished. It always is. Even under socialism. It's just that the bourgeosie are replaced by party members and the leaders replaced by the politburo in socialist regimes.

The baby boomers (and those a bit younger but who missed the war..)have done very well.
I have a pal who got on the property ladder not once but twice following a divorce where wife #1 took everything. That would be unthinkable today. We all kbnow folk who bought property in the 60s-80s who are sitting on a pile of cash right now with no mortgage. Am I jealous? No chance. I say good luck to them all. The Blue Rinse Brigade are putting billions back into the economy and I wish them all the best. I was born a bit later bit envy is for mugs.. |
|
By:
Envy is indeed for mugs and socialists. They keep telling us that in the next few decades the genome??? project will uncover the origins of all illnesses so that illness will become a thing of the past and people will live to 150 with iron bar erections for all. Are we envious? Errr. Maybe I'm a socialist.

Eeternaloptimist 13 Sep 15 15:16 That is my whole point Facts he won’t be fighting for the white working class will he. Of course he will be. That's the platform he was elected on. Haven't you listened to any of his pre election speeches ? I didn't take too much notice of the goings on Facts but if you are right then that would be a refreshing change. Can you point me to any of his speeches or literature which back your statement up? Excellent speech by Jeremy in Leeds. Hope you find it inspirational EO https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=DhhYnEYnM9A |

Some are and some arent. Sitting on mortgage free house with a final salary pension is a thing of the past, a different world from lays in wait for the young, the young arent mugs either they increasingly know they vote for change, will be just a matter of demographics more so than politics of left/right |

Life is often unfair Dusty. Nature is unfair, life is not. It takes substance to stand up against the crowd in many respects, I believe its mistrust in others than influence the acts of others to the greatest extent. Let this grow, yes it has problems outside looking in, but thats one of caution and greed. Im wealhy and nothing to lose, I throw my hat behind this movement. |
|
By:
I enjoyed the speech Facts although I wouldn't put him in the same league as decent Labour orators such as Kinnock and nowhere near the likes of Foot and some of the towering figures of history. I didn't see any reference to the indiginous working class. Can you point me to where he mentions them?

Jeremy's speech was peppered with references to the working class, the under privileged in society. At least 7 occasions 10.25 - 11.54 13.25 - 14.35 15.00 - 15.34 17.50 - 20.10 22.25 - 24.15 26.38 - 26.50 And closing minute. Continual references to the unfairness in our society The haves vs. the have nots The necessity for affordable education The absolute right of free medical care. The Labour Party was founded as a voice for the working class. It's disappeared into the middle murk over the last decades Jeremy's clarion call, is a true ' call to arms ' to get back to basics, back to the true values of a party that cares about society, fairness and equality for all. NOT just for those with money and power. It's a call to arms that is being listened to and is being heeded. Another 150,000 new members have joined in the last 24 hours Things are going to change. |

That was no way to speak to the refugees Facts.
Turned them away from your door just like an old inn keeper I read about once. |
|
By:
Oh Facts, I was going to say I feel affection towards you - but I do. The far left will imprison/execute/exile most of the people on here IF THEY COULD. I've seen it happen in dozens of countries that cratered. Socialists do not understand human nature and they do not comprehend history. People fit dogma/rules very, very badly. But you may have fun killing the deviants.
|
|
By:
A bit disingenuous that Facts. Any Labour politician from the right or left of the party will always talk about the poor and dispossessed but people on here have been very specific about the criticism they have levelled at the party. They believe, rightly or wrongly, that the white working class have alternately been ignored or sneered at by Labour. Corbyn gave no indication that he understood that or that things would change in that regard. The unspoken message is coming in loud and clear that the Labour party has abandoned them and so their votes will be up for grabs. The fact that Corbyn is a London based politician execrbates that problem. He probably sees London as being representative of the country when it clearly isn't. He and to be fair probably yourself would like it to be so. The majority of the people wouldn't and Labour don't care for them or their views and I doubt this will change under Corbyn.

Two words for you Hanks:
Emily Thornberry. Brought back into the cabinet after absolutely no demand despite the fact she recently resigned after her disgraceful comments about the white working class flying the national flag of this country. Corbyn certainly sent a message there about what he thinks. |
