I was reminded of it when I saw the Countdown Gotcha tonight, Torq', which was utterly brilliant.

The man who solved it didn't actually know it was correct within the 30 seconds, he just knew it should be correct.  Mathematicians think differently.

Clue 1. Start with the 100 or 6.

3+6 = 9 x 100 = 900 + 50 = 950 + (75/25 = 3) = 953

953 is easy, with respect.

100 + 6 = 106

106 × 3 = 318

318 x 75 = 23850

23850 - 50 = 23800

23800 / 25 = 952

brilliant but for most of us undoable

75 * 6 / 50 = 9

(100 + 3) * 9 = 927 +25 = 952

Only started making headway after Kenny's clue - was stumped otherwise

that ones more doable as most of us dont think big

But so much of the show when Vorderman was go was fake, fake laugh, dragging on conversations to draw attention to herself etc, great arse though.

You'd think, given the nature of (part of) the audience, that someone would have produced definitive figures to show which one is better at the numbers game -- faster solutions; fewer failures; harder sums -- that sort of thing. A quick search failed to turn anything up though.

I remember Rachel struggled when she first started, missing a few easy numbers.

I only watch now if she's wearing a very short skirt!
