More than ever before this one is purely about the money. Both fighters know they are at the end of their careers so no need to put titles & reputation on the line like they would have had to a few years ago. Still just about in time to be a credible match up though but both know it's all about maximising the payday.

As such, I expect an unconvincingly suspicious draw with a rematch planned for the end of the year. Probably in Qatar or Dubai. A lay of Mayweather might be the value bet.

I'm not much of a boxing fan, but I have watched a few of the fights that have been shown on Sky Sports this week. I suppose from what I've read that most people will want Manny to win? He definitely seems the better man of the two.

I think I might set my alarm to watch it, I'd rather it be on at that time instead of 1am. I wouldn't fancy watching a repeat later on in the day.

That is certainly true to a large extent, Alun, but Mayweather's ego is so vast that a loss would be devastating to him despite the purse.

They are by some way still the best around their weight class Alun. It isn't a case of two bald men fighting over a comb. Their ages actually add another layer to the fight. Pacman is younger but has been in far more wars but on the other hand he relies on his skill and power offensively which isn't as likely to show rapid diminution. Mayweather is all about silkiness, speed, reflexes and great defence. He comes out with some shinola but for my money he's the best since a peak Roy Jones and in many ways he reminds me of Jones and that's informative. One minute Jones was going up to heavyweight because he wanted to cement his legacy and giving Ruiz a lesson but in the very next fight he came back down and it was no longer there against Tarver. The rest is history with him then being knocked out and gradually fading from view. My point is that those kinds of fighters can go very quickly. At 38 is it that time for Mayweather? Who knows but again it's an interesting sub plot especially given the quality of his opponent.

I've made the point on the boxing forum but I do think it's very relevant. Will the referee dictate how the fight goes? Manny has a much shorter reach and therefore needs to do his best work on the way in or on the inside. We saw with the Hatton fight that whenever Hatton got inside the ref jumped in and split them up. If the referee refuses to let Manny fight where does he go? He can't beat Mayweather from the outside but who knows how the fight will go if he can do his thing on the inside and make Mayweather fight hard for 12 rounds?

Whatever happens for boxings sake I hope it turns out to be a barnburner.

I don't usually clarify but boxing is too important. With reference to Hatton I was talking about the Mayweather fight and with reference to Jones the KO I was referring to came in their second fight.

I lost touch with boxing a while back, after there seemed to be roughly 6 different World Champions for each division. I liked Lennox Lewis but haven't paid much attention to the sport since he retired.

Incidentally, if you'd all like to read a sportsman's memoirs that aren't a pile of dull dross, I suggest you try Mike Tyson's "Undisputed Truth". Jaw-dropping (and mostly appalling) revelations on every page. A horrendous tale.

If it was a fight of 'good v bad' Manny would win hands down, but, alas, life doesn't always work like that.

I too (like the OP) hope Manny wins, but EO has spelt it out @22:34 (like he usually does with his excellent boxing posts) just as it probably will pan out.

However, I already said to myself a few days ago 'a little dabble on the draw' may not be too shoddy a bet - boxing being boxing and the money-men being the money-men and all that.

I think Floyd has been hiding from Manny all these years.I think one of his trainers attested to this.
I don't think he will be able to cope with Manny's relentless blitzkrieg and will fall inside the distance.
I think Floyd relented on the fight when they offered him 2/3 of the purse and he had nowhere to hide.
He could still get Manny with a Sledgehammer punch but I doubt it.

Manny chinned Hatton in 2. Hatton gave Floyd a few problems so it's Manny for me. If only things were that simple.

Mayweather has not recorded 120-108 on the judges cards much recently

We live in metrosexual times and so grown men rubbing their crotches in each others faces as B-Hop so memorably put it whilst having no great interest for some of us old timers may well appeal to youngsters. I put some of boxings problems down to the marketing, hype and degeneracy of the Tyson era. There's only so much WWF style nonsense you can foist on people before it descends into farce. It's a sweet science epitomised by the ongoing struggle between brain and brawn and a younger generation brought up on hyperbole and theatrics may well lean towards the, "I want to eat your babies" lunacy of Tyson rather than the, "you can eat my left jab, right cross and uppercuts" of Lewis. Tyson was taught a painful lesson and found humility that night. The UFC/MMA generation clearly didn't learn.

Was a Exhibition and then a masterclass, timing and super hype for the moneymen of PPV and mayweather/paxo. I fear we will see another hype fight after mayweather contractual fight in september. With an eye on another mega fight I don't think, "he whipped me and there was nothing I could do" would be the biggest seller. People may be gullible but surely not that gullible?
