Weed seeds are everywhere neworder. They are well acclimatised and hardier than the cultivars we grow for food and flowers so if you don't keep on top of them they take over. For flower and vegetable beds, your hoe is your best friend and a bit of hoeing should be the first job you do every time you garden. Keep the blade sharp at all times.
You can't use the hoe on the lawn so mow regularly and spread lime on it every autumn. Alkaline conditions will suppress moss. If the lawn is infested with rosette weeds and you don't have the time to dig them out then you have to resort to chemical weedkillers. Best not to compost grass cuttings after treatment as many weedkillers persist in the grass blades and you could end up killing your plants when you use the compost. Enjoy your garden. |

I am not a good gardener but do like it to look nice and neat. I will buy a hoe sounds like it will help me sort out along the drive. Not long been in this house and its only now we have been able to start to sort the garden out,it has not been looked after for a long time. Right now doing loads of work just making it ready to actually make it look nice if you know what I mean like pressure washing paths,sorting drive border, lawns, hanging baskets etc etc. Its a pain in the ar5e because putting loads of work in without it looking the part yet but I know a day will come when it will be worth it:) Might hire a man to come help me ........I'm getting too old :) |

Good luck with your garden neworder. As Blackbarn said, you need patience but it will come right sooner than you think. Gardening is all about planning and doing a bit regularly and at the right time. Don't try and do everything at once otherwise you will get discouraged.
I sometimes feel my age too and have given up digging except for unearthing potatoes and use an azada and Canterbury (right angled) fork for tilling instead. They are far less effort than conventional fork and spade when you get used to them. Nice one Screaming. I find dandelions a bit too bitter but enjoy chicory with a bit of olive oil and vinegar. Although slugs will eat chicory, they prefer lettuce so I plant a few sacrificial lettuces alongside to minimise the attack.
