I'm going to Donnington this Sunday to watch the GT and F3 racing. It will start around 10.00 am and finish around 6.00 pm, £15 for the day which is around the same price as a League 2 football match, motor sports is not all about F1.

Just watch the first and the last lap and you won't miss much.
Another irritating aspect of F1 for me is the media prominence it's given. Yesterday on the BBC website it was all about the "exciting" Grand Prix. This morning we get a headline "Hamilton has a different aura". It seems totally media driven, like some childrens' pop group or the latest blockbuster film. When Bernie finally goes off to look after his roses step forward that other marketing genius Simon Cowell to keep shoving it down our throats. Of course it is interesting to a lot people as is space flight or the quest for the human genome but with the general public becoming increasingly bored with it as a sport it simply doesn't justify the amount of "column inches" devoted to it. If you complain to F1 fans that you find their sport boring they'll tell you it's not about the drivers it's a team sport and about all the stuff the manufacturers do to get the cars first over the line. From a science and technology aspect you'd imagine that the real cutting edge would be Formula E then, but without the marketing ability and money of course, of F1 I think you'll wait a long time before the public are even aware of its existence and the teams and drivers involved. Tuesday morning rant over. Victor. |

I've just read your post and I totally agree with you. There's lots of good entertaining motor sports at a sensible price but none of them get anywhere near the media coverage of F1. Personally I love speedway which receives virtually no coverage at all, but it's a good night out, not expensive, a friendly crowd and you can see and know the riders. |

the smell from a speedway meeting is something else larry, I've not been for years I really should now Leicester have a team again.

The basis of Formula E is already incorporated in Formula One. Much of the car's power comes from the battery pack.
I would suggest that the next big breakthrough in battery technology will come via F1, rather than Formula E. I might be wrong. |

Thanks BB the mention of the smell brought back some great memories of Cradley Speedway with Eric Gunderson, Bruce Penhall, Jan Pederson etc. I've made a resolution to go again this summer and take the grandson. Probably Wolverhampton or Coventry.
My son lives in Tranas, Sweden where there is a statue to their big local sporting hero Ove Fundin. |

- Clutch/brake/steer
- Accelerating my come in handy drivers don't normally operate the clutch so it's just accelerate/brake/steer |

^and 20 odd buttons on the steering wheel.

pushing all those buttons is just basically moving your fingers on the steering wheel (i.e. steering), haven't seen one who could accelerate/brake/steer/eat a falafel/text the mrs about picking up Mr Jiffy from Tescos

I would guess the 'smell' that you recall would be Castrol 'R'.

....or weapons-grade bullsh1t if you were at an F1 Grand Prix

They should all use the same cars on a flat start to find the best driver. Surely that is what it is all about. Not manufacturer's cash, technical expertise & best car. Of course this is my simplified view and the real followers find the technical side more interesting. How can you possibly know who the best driver is ? A fella in a porsche would always beat me in my reliant robin. As mentioned above, each to their own. Not for me though.

To try and create a bit of excitement, the designated team driver(s) should go out and do practice in other teams cars.
The fastest lap times then go to the back of the starting grid for the race. A true champion will work his way through the pack and still win. |

There was the A1 Grand Prix series that ran for a few years back from 2005, where all the cars were basically the same. I'm sure everyone remembers it well.

By:
I remember A1. The cars were the same. Very slow and driven by ex f1 chumps.

Good point about the comparison with F1 and the latest blockbuster movie.
Just as despite its limited interest you'd have to be that deaf dumb and blind kid not to be aware of F1 you'd have to suffer from the same afflictions to not know that there's a new Star Wars film coming later in the year. |
|
By:
Had no idea there was a star wars film coming out, now that is cack.
|
|
By:
Never seen a Star Wars film.
Star Trek - different gravy. |

F1 is NOT about who is the best driver. It is about every aspect in the racing team. The drivers are pretty evenly matched. The cars vary in their suitability for the different circuits. Some are better aerodynamically. Some are better on high-speed circuits. Some are better on twisty tracks. Some are easier on tyre wear. Some are easier on fuel consumption. Some are easier on the braking system. Some have more observant mechanics. Some have better trained pit crews.
It is a very expensive class to race in, but the rewards can be huge. Just don't expect anybody to make it easy for you. There are plenty of different classes to suit all tastes...but Formula One is the pinnacle that any team would aspire to. I can't make you like it, nor would I wish to. Maybe I'm just lucky as I can enjoy watching almost any 'sport'. Athletics, boxing, football, cricket, gymnastics, bowls, curling, skiing, rowing, power boats, sailing, bull-riding, American football, golf, tennis and just about anything else that you care to name. They are all different and maybe some of you should just take off the blinkers from time to time and maybe open your mind. |

Yeah but it's still boring.

If it's not about the driver why is the headline always about Hamilton?
|
|
By:
Because he is British and that was the British press. No mention of the German and Italian cars for obvious reasons. Rule Britannia and all that.

Not F1s fault, but Skys over analysis drives me mad as well. Spend hours talking about points that are irrelevant anyway. Worse than the football
