20 Apr 15 14:44 I don't know how that is done, at a guess I would say the dog is actually still inside the bell jar? bit like when they make the elephant or a tank disappear. Nope. It's definitely vanished. Clue: It took two men to lift the statue of the dog on to the table. The magician couldn't lift the bell jar, with the dog inside it, on his own. |

Our man in Cyprus is correct.
![]() The tripod table that the magician carries on at the start has hollow legs. The top is not level, it has a very slight incline to the centre, where a small hole is drilled. It's placed at the front of the stage and the statue must be covered a.s.a.p as the stage lights soon heat it up. It melts and runs away down the hole into the legs while he performs a few other tricks. These days it would cost a fortune at scrap prices for mercury, apart from the fact that contact with it wouldn't be allowed under Health & Safety rules, as it's possible it can be absorbed through the skin, and once in the bloodstream, it can cause brain damage. |

I thought it might be that. I remember it cropped up in an episode of Jonathan Creek

Was someone standing on the stage behind the magician with flip cards showing the numbers, like in the Bob Dylan song, or like Mrs Doyle in Father Ted "go on", "go on", "go on"?

My sincere apologies, Trebor (and everyone else). I hadn't forgotten, though, I was endeavouring to explain the trick using an excerpt from my book of pool tricks, but I'm having a devil of a time getting the images to upload.
