6550 feet up was the crash site. A mayday call had been made so must have been engine failure I'd assume.
Going to be hard to investigate given the remoteness of the crash site. Tragic. |

Not possible. Passengers wouldn't jump, couldn't jump, or simply would not have time. Totally impractical...unfortunately.

this thing has come down like a brick mainly in one piece, no distress call now being reported against earlier reports and only other interesting point was that it was in for some maintenance yesterday

I travelled on a 320 a few months ago,when it took off & was gaining height there was the strangest noise like a crackling sound.i asked the stewardess what it was she said it was normal on the aircraft & was the cabin repressurising.iv travelled a lot by air but never heard a similar noise im not a nervous flyer but i was that day.

Airbus 320 ,around 140 on board ,takes off from Barcelona at 9.00 bound for Dusseldorf ,climbs to cruise around 38k feet and then just after 9:30 starts a rapid but from what i can gather a fairly controlled decent ,this continues for about 10 mins ,plane levels off for a few mins below 10k before further descending into terrain ,the alps .Wreckage strewn over a fairly big area but mostly in a snow free valley ,reported that no emergency freq squawk was made .Black boxes recovered apparently but unconfirmed.
nothing untoward reported so far and suspicion of decompression and suspected hypoxia ...but just conjecture . RIP the dead . |

Seems odd not taking a direct route.
Planes often don't take what appears to be the most direct route. Mainly due to a combination of things such as the amount of air traffic that's up there at any one time, to take advantage of jet streams and wind directions and geometric considerations to reflect the earth is curved though that applies more to long haul flights I believe. |

just to add there was a distress call ,but not an emergency squawk ,although debatable where an emergency squawk is on the list if you have an real emergency.
Snow due in the region tonight will make recovery hard to impossible . reported nothing untoward or unusual with route . |
