Bought four slices of haddock recently at a major supermarket's fish counter. When it was cooked it was obviously whiting, not haddock. Paying for haddock, getting whiting. Don't think it's a simple error - it's happened a few times before. There's an online Guardian article saying that whiting is substituted in 25% of fish sales.
Has this happened to anybody else? Something fishy going on?

The Fish and Chip van at Cheltenham I noticed described the fish it was selling as 'Atlantic caught fish' which makes me think it wasn't Haddock or Cod, but couldn't be bothered to ask them what it actually was. Nor did I buy any at £6.50 for a mackerel sized portion of 'atlantic fish' and 2oz of chips.

Check out "Frozen Fish Direct" and no gripes please about being frozen!

They have everything you could possibly want, at a hell of a saving against the supermarket, or fishmonger, if you are lucky enough to have one where you are. Spend £70.00+ and no delivery charge. Deliveries are day following order and sent in a substantial polystyrene box with dry ice. I get three deliveries a year, and Gemma joins in and takes a third or so. |

I'm a fan of frozen fish, also. It really is fresher than "fresh fish" in a fishmongers, and safer to eat obviously.
The fact that its cheaper is a massive bonus  |

Watched a programme on ch4 called food unwrapped about fresh v frozen fish to see which was freshest and which was best value for money. Frozen was by far the best in every category v supermarket fishmongers, the professor guy doing all the tests in lab only ever eats frozen fish.

I was in a restaurant in Reading & ordered hake.
The fish that was served had a herring-bone pattern on the flesh, were it had been filleted. Hake is a cartilaginous fish. It doesn't have bones. I said to the waiter the fish was nice. What was it? He said hake. I said was it feck hake. He said their supplier said it was hake. |

Dixie - Hake is not cartilaginous, it has bones and is of the same family as Cod and Haddock.

I checked out that "frozen fish direct",decent site,a kilo of frogs legs(oui) can be yours for less than a ten spot.

Just looked at a leaflet from Iceland and it says the same thing about it being fresher when it is frozen within 3 hours on board ship. They sell Swordfish, Hake and Seabass as well as Squid, Prawns and Scallops. I thought the prices were slightly expensive compared to other Iceland products but I may just try some after reading the comments above.

Well, the fish was fresh - very nice just the same. We tend to do fish in batter or those convenient orangey  breadcrumbs...but whiting is much milder than haddock and proper haddock has big meaty flakes and a much more chewy texture...it's unmistakeable, even compared to good quality fresh cod. The best filleted haddock comes in a big diamond shape... Also, whiting tends to break up in the pan and can quickly turn mushy if you overcook it.Some good info here...ta, all. |

I live a few miles east of Plymouth and boat fish a few times a year, but it's feast or famine. There's a ten day spell down this way, usually in September, when we go spinning for bass as the conditions have them top feeding and during that time my freezer gets rammed full. Usually gone by mid-December, and then I spend fortunes on supermarket stuff. Love pretty much anything smoked, especially haddock, and the prices from FFDirect are almost half that of the shysters. People that are adverse to frozen fish must remeber that almost every commercially caught sea fish has been frozen at some point. For nearly a decade I lived in Penzance, next to Newlyn, a once huge provider of quality fish. Most of the trawlers trips would be be for seven to ten days and they paid a wee fortune to "The Ice Makers" every month. |

My typical re-order is for....
"Cod Loin" 2kg which are just nice generous sized portions "Monkfish Fillets" 1kg "U/5 King Prawns" 2 x 908g "Salmon Fillets" These are brilliant as the are individually vacuum packed, and I cook them in the bag, in the water with my veggies. "Squid Tubes" 2kg "Tuna Loin" 1kg "Cod Loin Fish Fingers"...excellent "Seafood Cocktail"...brilliant for risotto or pizza "Escargots" x2 "Battered Squid Rings" x3 "Lobster Tails" x2 "Seabass" x2 (4) "Smoked and Peppered Mackerel Fillets" Ikg Obviously I mix it up a bit, but it's great to always have to hand, especially if guests come at short notice. You will not be disappointed.....  |

Caveat emptor Incidentally, a multimillionaire from the world of elite sport once made a nice few quid in the early days by dressing up as a fishmonger and selling "smoked salmon" (of disputed "Best Before" date) outside sports venues. A personal hero of mine. |

Got to agree with those that have mentioned frozen fish as being far, far superior to 'fresh' fish from the supermarkets.
The only way fish tastes better than being frozen within 3 hours out at sea/in the processing units is if you're fortunate enough to be in a fishing port where they sell it straight off the boats - or to the restaurants in the near vicinity. |

Slightly prefer KingCrab as a frozen fish supplier myself for the simple reason every now and again they also have a surfeit of fresh fish that they sell at ridiculously low prices so long as you order it for next day delivery. Back at the end of November, they had monster sized halibut available for £10 a kilo and I ordered 10kg....spent over an hour the next day filleting and freezing it and gave some away for Christmas!
Have to agree about frozen fish direct with respect to their cod loin fish fingers though....massive and the best I've ever seen, and the peppered and boned smoked mackerel is good too. |

I only eat fresh Atlantic Cod that I catch myself and believe me, cod cooked 3 hrs after catching is absolutely delicious and there is nothing that can match it. Woman across the road asked me to please keep her a Smokie if I catch one.

'Cause if it is, I might have to change the thread title so that it's less like an OXYMORON but I'll only do that if you convince me it's an OXYMORON...don't think I'd want to change it if it's not really an OXYMORON, but I think it might be an OXYMORON...what do you think on an OXYMORON-type scale of 1-10...??
