And hasn't received a penny of compensation.
The MoJ said only people who proved their innocence could get compensation.
Mr George was convicted of murdering Jill Dando in 2001 but was acquitted of the killing at a retrial in 2008 after doubt was cast on the reliability of gunshot residue evidence.
His family has tried and failed twice to get compensation for him and are now campaigning for a change in the law.
Absolute disgrace.

A bizarre legal anomaly really. To convict you need evidence beyond reasonable doubt. When this is subsequently proven to not be the case then the tenet of innocence because guilt was wrongly arrived at should surely be reinstated and the demand to actually prove innocence is at the least unjust? If so then pay the man what he is due for stealing his life.

In 1981, George somehow persuaded a stadium in Derby to stage a stunt in which he jumped over a row of double decker buses on his rollerskates. The stadium sold hundreds of tickets for the event. At the last moment, having seen the platform and ramp which had been constructed, George tried to back down but plucked up courage and managed to complete the leap.

it wasnt an unreasonable decision based on evidence doubt has been raised against part of the evidence so his conviction was deemed unsafe hes got a long history of stuff, not sure why my taxes should fund his life in exile |

The case against him was very weak, it was almost entirely circumstantial.
The only thing hat convicted him was one piece of forensic evidence. Immediately doubt was cast on that evidence, there was no case against him. I do not see why we should not pay him compensation, for wrongful imprisonment. People get paid large compensation claims for far less, in fact often for telling a complete pack of lies. |

it's absolutely farcical. it's impossible to prove that you're innocent as opposed being not guilty short of a cast iron alibi and if you had that you wouldn't have been fitted up for it in the first place
you only have to take one look at him to see he wasn't capable of carrying out what was in all likelihood a professional hit man job |

These are similar quote`s to the unfounded opinions of most fools when the appeals were ongoing for The Birmingham 6, Guildford 4, Maguire 7, Bridgewater 3 in the 70s. Despite the shameful historical stitch-ups, the ****s used to claim "IF THEY WERE NOT GUILTY OF THAT CRIME, YOU CAN BE SURE THEY ARE GUILTY OF SOMETHING ELSE"  George is suspiciously looking like a possible fit up, no surprise to find out in 20 years time that he was a distraction to avoid a huge political scandal, or just a soft target to clean up a high profile case. |

The police seem to find the local nutter then try to make the eveidance fit. Like the murder of Rachel Nickell, they tried to fit up Coilin Stagg. 16 years later Robert Napper admitted to the crime. Napper killed a mother and daughter after Stagg had been arrested for murder.

There is never a requirement in law to prove your innocence so why should he need to in order to receive compensation? The answer can only be to spare the public purse in the knowledge that a significant share of the great British public are both ignorant and selfish and will not give two hoots about this travesty. |

I believe anybody in charge of a department at a six figure salary takes responsibility for what goes on the department If you she does not, what on earth was she being paid for? Barry George is innocence so he deserves compensation. |

But you see there is also a similarity here You say Sharon Shoesmith was not dismissed by due process of law so deserves her compensation But you see if you look at Barry George's case and the fact it was squashed it would appear he was not convicted by due process of law either So by your own logic he deserves compensation as well Wesdag |
