My idea of leaving Nationalism behind on Earth, will only last until something of value is discovered on Mars

over which we will then compete

I imagine then, different countries will land at different parts of the planet and claim that for themselves

Its a bit rich to claim a whole planet

There is also an idea we could reintroduce an atmosphere on Mars, to make it habitable for life, without space suits.

That is very long term, a considerable time away.

I think it had an atmosphere at one time and water on the surface, but the gravitational pull of the planet could not hang

onto the atmosphere.

The robots we send are currently looking to see if life existed in this period.

There a very large US Robot trundling round of its craters now looking for possible evidence, Curiosity

So far Mars has sadly not lived up to its Science Fiction billing

Well if the US are going to claim Mars, we can at least claim the area around Beagle 2

We should call it 'New Britain'

If Richard Branson actually gets one of his space craft into space without blowing

we will get there some day

I like the thrust of lfc1971's argument.
Mars should be owned by the USA. They set some basic rules like no financial favours to religion and free press and pron being artistic expression. And then the rest of the world works really hard, saves up, and buys the place off them, a piece at a time. That's how the system works here, and no-one's complaining.
