Obviously not a coincidence, but terrible decision to award damages. Music has been about being inspired by, borrowing, and outright "stealing" (sampling) the work of others for 5 centuries.
Tom Petty's work has been borrowed by others before (I'm thinking both the Red Hot Chilli Peppers & Noah and the Whale). Disappointed to see him taking action this time around. It's below him. |

Forgot to mention, the ripped off track was "I won't back down".

Lloyd Webber the worst

The 2 tracks are identical and yet there was no acknowledgement.

I'd also add that probably about a third of new music I hear reminds me strongly of another, older piece of music I'm familiar with.
Fuss over nothing. Genius's steal. |

Such nonsense that Tom & Jeff have now been given a writing credit.

I manage to stay in a bubble and still blissfully unaware of the drivel that is the musical desert of 21st chart pop music.
Still plenty of quality music , John Grant , Ariel Pink , Mark Kozelek , War On Drugs , Caribou ........to have any excuse to listen to the puerile fodder on music channels & most radio stations. |

Bittersweet Symphony is apparently the best song ever 'written' by The Rolling Stones.

WTF ?
I'm a Tom Petty fan and know the song (I Wont Back Down) well. I never connected these 2 songs at all. I've just had another listen and the only thing that is similar on both tracks is the timing on 3 words of the chorus, that's it, just timing. The two tracks are wildly different. WTF ?? ![]() |

Why oh why didn't Sam just stick to her insightful tennis commentaries? Do what you're good at.

Lloyd Webber allegedly copied a Pink Floyd track for Phantom of the Opera
but they couldn't be bothered suing him. |

TP's released this statement
"About the Sam Smith thing. Let me say I have never had any hard feelings toward Sam. All my years of songwriting have shown me these things can happen. Most times you catch it before it gets out the studio door but in this case it got by. Sam’s people were very understanding of our predicament and we easily came to an agreement. The word lawsuit was never even said and was never my intention. And no more was to be said about it. How it got out to the press is beyond Sam or myself. Sam did the right thing and I have thought no more about this. A musical accident no more no less. In these times we live in this is hardly news. I wish Sam all the best for his ongoing career. Peace and love to all." |

Great statement by Tom Petty, the man is class.
|
|
By:
If Sam Smith talks like he sings he will be whining about this.

|
By:
So Sam Smith wasn't being a "businessman" by profiting from Tom Petty's work?
|
|
By:
have to agree with Thunderoad, not a class statement at all..... A class statement would be along the lines of,
these things happen, who really gives a sh*t, I don't... rather than Sam’s people were very understanding of our predicament What fe**ing predicament??? that he is hard up and needs some cash or exposure, more fame on the back of a young songwriter..... WALOFS If I had written 'Wont back down', I would be seriously embarrassed to have my name put down as a credit on 'Stay With Me' what a tool.... |

"Our predicament"
FFS I can just see Tom phoning Jeff up in the middle of the night in all of a tizzy wanting to know what they should do about it..... |
