But we don't mind cos they're good mates of ours.

No calls for democracy or free and fair elections but yet we lecture the likes of North Korea, Syria & Zimbabwe.

Oh the irony.

Flags being flown at half mast on government in the UK to mark the recent passing of the latest despot.

You couldn't make it up.

Yes that is all very fine and good of you, but where would our arms shares be if we didn't have such upstanding people such as these.

“For us not to fly at half-mast would be to make a noticeably aggressive comment on the death of the king of a country to which the UK is allied in the fight against Islamic terrorism.

“Nor would it have done anything to support the desperately oppressed Christian communities of the Middle East for whom we pray constantly and publicly.”

Now he has died does that mean we run the risk of being run down by loads of hysterical, drunken women drivers, celebrating their freedom under the new king.  Well they will at least be 'under' him !!???

The prime minister said the king would be remembered for his "commitment to peace and for strengthening understanding between faiths".

one irony is that King Abdullah spent billions on his country's air force, but the only time he got to see Saudi pilots in action was on 9/11

Brilliant from HH.

What is the Saudis position on IS etc...? Any chance of doing something?

We await the BBC's grilling of their ambassador...

They are the biggest obstacle to peace in the ME. It really is shameful how we ignore what they get up to so we can keep trading arms with them. You couldn't pay me enough to step foot in that place. You have my sympathies Rob. I'm sure the usual anti Israel lot think Saudi being a despotic regime is ok as democracy just doesn't fit in with their culture Laugh

Injera - in case you missed the article. The Saudi position on IS is to build a big fkin wall to keep them out lol

Oh the irony.

It's not irony, it's the worst example of duplicity you could imagine. A blogger sentenced to 10 years and 1,000 lashes - Saudi Arabia, world capital of barbarism yet so called leaders of the "free" world kowtow to it's "royals".

No point, there are plenty more to follow him. His old man fathered 30 odd sprogs by 16 wives or thereabouts. Despots living with medieval laws in the 21st century.

Still we wait for a BBC journalist to ask the Muslim Council if they want Sharia Law in the UK, to replicate Saudi Arabia..

Better still, ask Cameron, Milliband and the Queen..

Have you lot actually thought this through or just getting off on the, oh, so predictable, "It's all about the oil" mantra.

You may have noticed a few things about the region. Would you prefer a completely unstable region?

Sometimes, in the real world, countries have to be pragmatic. Saudi produces about 14% of the world's oil. If you want to keep the lights on and your central heating working and your buses and trains and air-planes and your little run-around, in fact pretty much everything that gets produced in the world, including your computer and your mobile phone, running then best keep them onside.

rather do with 14% less than show any respect for man who locked his daughters in their house for years.

The Saudis are trying to destroy the US oil industry- they even produced the 9/11 terrorists. Quite why the Americans put up with it is a mystery especially as they are now self-sufficient in oil.

Unstable?

That's fine Clouseau so long as we don't get disingenuous Western politicians banging on about democracy and human rights when it suits them.

I think if we could turn back the clock, they'd have Saddam back in an instant.

Saudi Arabia's religious police stopped schoolgirls from leaving a blazing building because they were not wearing correct Islamic dress
According to the al-Eqtisadiah daily, firemen confronted police after they tried to keep the girls inside because they were not wearing the headscarves and abayas (black robes) required by the kingdom's strict interpretation of Islam.

One witness said he saw three policemen "beating young girls to prevent them from leaving the school because they were not wearing the abaya"

Jeddah consulate officials described an underground Halloween party, thrown last year by a member of the royal family, which broke all the country's Islamic taboos. Liquor and prostitutes were present in abundance, according to leaked dispatches, behind the heavily-guarded villa gates

So Hank Hill... Russia produces the same, so that's over a quarter, then there's the other countries in the region, China... pretty soon you're over half the world's oil. That leaves less than 50% but you are then getting to the likes of Algeria and Nigeria. Do I have to go on?

Wesdag... Get real. Countries have vital interests that are necessary to try to protect in order to provide a degree of security, jobs and a standard of living. Politicians have to cosy up to some unpleasant people as a matter of national interest. It is pretty easy poking them with a stick from afar on here for being disingenuous but consider their alternatives.
