Two questions

1 How did he get away with it on the homeward journey?

2 Is he the only one?

Train fares are now so expensive, that even the bankers cant afford it.

What does that paragraph mean in English please?

"He was found to have dodged the £21.50 daily fare from the unmanned station at Stonegate in East Sussex by tapping out with an Oyster card on his arrival in London, paying the maximum fare of £7.20 rather than buying the required ticket for £21.50"

Oyster card is for use within London, the maximum fare per trip is £7.20. He saved 21.50-7.20=£14.30 per day, I think.

if I was on a million a year I would pay someone to drive me in to work....never mind trying to save 14 quid a day...what a greedy chunt.

Oyster cards only about 10 years old afaik,
at about 3.5k a year it don't add up to 43k

Ok return journey would make it about 7k a year,
that's still about 6 years fiddling

... I'll give you an "A" for effort, but castigation is more effective if you can manage to write your words out, proper style like.

I'd read that the amount he owed was significantly less than the 43k, but he payed that figure up front to avoid further hassle. It's now being reported as that's what he actually literally owed. (Not defending the guy, just pointing it out).

Regardless of the fact of whether he's rich and can afford it or not, it's still pretty harsh that he can't work in his industry ever again. He's bunked the train ffs, not killed someone

Someone rang in and said he avoided paying £2.10 - something to do with his Oyster card. He said it was a genuine mistake but his solicitor said he had to plead guilty.

He was fined £350 and has a criminal record. Wow.

so hes not allowed back to work in his profession , so will we just let him work in other places? he could rob anywhere he seems a top scammer

I dodged my fare loads of times on London buses and The Underground

Just as well we moved to Norfolk, I could be banned from the whole of London.

I think if you're caught without a ticket on the 'overground', you're charged the higher of the full standard single fare or a £20 penalty.

I thought if you don't touch in and out on  the London Underground, they charge you the maximum fee equivalent to the price of a daily travelcard zone 1-9 which is what 8,9 quid? I would imagine there are a lot more fare dodgers on the overground as there are a lot of unmanned entrances and open barriers especially in suburban stations, one of the reasons why they got rid of most of the bendy buses commonly known as the free bus as so many got on at the second set of doors without touching in.

When people are caught without a ticket at all don't they just give fake details anyway?

why have a bendy bus , why not just have a double decker

after a celtic game , i was nashing for last train glasgow to edinburgh i had a ticket but had no time to feck about to ran and tried to leap barrier , clipped it and landed on my face no one blinked an eye and im sat on train with a burst nose

when i go on the tube if im a bit skint ill let someone else click through and slide through with them, i dont see the big deal, i feel a bit sorry for him

i say good luck if you can get it for free why pay

Well he's obviously good at his job as he was a hedge fund manager and apparently owns two houses worth over a million each, so i'd certainly trust his judgement on my investments. Bunking the train shouldn't impact on his job.

The WH Smith stores are unmanned at most airports...

You have to scan your items at the self serving tills.

Well this is it, I'd guess the reason he's been singled out for extreme punishment is "political", to show they have teeth and so on. If there wasn't the culture/anger against people in the city, I doubt he'd have had this draconian measure stuck on him.
